23.01.2022 **PARVO ALERT** Are you dogs vaccinations up to date? We have unfortunately been seeing multiple positive Canine parvovirus cases recently! Parvo is a highly infectious virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. Un-vaccinated dogs are particularly susceptible to contracting parvo as this virus can survive in the environment for months and it only takes a very small amount to infect an exposed animal.... Once contracted, intensive treatment is required for the best chance of survival. Left untreated the mortality rate exceeds 90%. Avoid a parvo scare by ensuring your dogs vaccinations are up to date, and that your puppy receives a full course of initial vaccinations- 1 is not enough! The age at which your puppy receives their vaccinations is also important as there is a critical time when the mothers natural antibodies are beginning to subside, and this is the point where we need to intervene with a vaccination to ensure your puppy stays protected. Unfortunately are still seeing many heartbreaking cases of parvo at the moment. The first signs of parvo virus are general lethargy and inappetence (off colour or flat) followed by vomiting and/or diarrhoea. The earlier treatment commences, the better the chance of survival so if in doubt, please call your vet for advice.

07.01.2022 As many businesses in town know only too well, it can be difficult to attract skilled people to work in Alice Springs. For many years, there has been an Australia-wide shortage of veterinarians willing to work in regional areas because of the need to be on call to attend to emergencies. Most major cities have dedicated veterinary emergency hospitals, so the general practice vets are not required to be on call outside normal business hours. Pre-COVID, we were able to cover tem...porary shortages with locum (relief) veterinarians from interstate. Unfortunately, with the risk of sudden border closures this is no longer a reliable option. Our veterinarians have been working hard to provide a high level of care to all our patients, but our work-load is not sustainable. We have made the difficult decision to close for routine appointments on Saturday until further notice and apologise for the inconvenience this will cause some clients. We remain open until 6pm Monday to Friday and a veterinarian is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies and (with the help of our veterinary nurses) to care for our patients in hospital. Once again, we apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. Please be patient with our receptionists as they do their best to accommodate all requests for appointments! See more
