17.01.2022 Sometimes people tell me I’d love to paint but I don’t have time, I don’t have space in my house, I have young kids etc. Hopefully this pic will inspire you to find a way. I use the kid’s Ikea easel. I throw a drop mat down in the middle of the lounge room (Bunnings), put the easel on top, wheel my little paint trolley (Spotlight) out from my bedroom where it lives to keep it away from little hands (they still find it ) and I paint surrounded by the chaos three kids create... in a lounge room that also functions as a play room and front entrance to our house. Doesn’t the baby touch the painting? When she comes near, I pick her up and paint with her on my hip. She usually looses interest after a while and wanders off to play close by. The older two have learnt not to get too close. Although that didn’t stop my four year old from leaping off the couch the other day, tripping and grabbing the painting to stop his fall Miraculously the painting survived. I paint on one morning or afternoon of my two days off or on the weekend in a spare few hours. As for finding the energy? That’s the hardest one of all. I often don’t feel like painting. I’m too tired! So I grab a canvas anyway, prep it and set it up on my easel so it’s ready to go. Then when I find a spare moment or inspiration hits, I find its much easier to get going because everything is set up. And once I start I get into flow and forget about everything else (while still tracking 1-3 little people closely!) and 1 to 2 hours later I’m done. Sometimes I get enough time to paint a painting from start to finish in one go. Other times I’ll return to the same painting once a day for 3-4 days. If you’d like to paint, buy your materials, set up the kids easel and tie your canvas up high with hanging wire or sweep the mess on the dining table to one side and put down a piece of paper or canvas mat and go for it. The more you paint, the easier it gets.. you’ll refine all your processes and your family will fit in around you. A word of warning though, being creative is addictive.
