22.01.2022 On this International Day of Democracy I’ve been thinking about what democracy should look like in Australia. Democracy should look like open, accountable and responsible government - Scott Morrison’s Government has been actively avoiding scrutiny and they continuously refuse to implement a national political integrity commission. Labor has committed to a Federal ICAC. Democracy should look like a free and fair society where we look after those of us who are doing it tough - ...Scott Morrison and his team have abandoned bushfire affected Australians and are trying to confiscate mobile phones from refugees locked in detention. Democracy should look like a free and fair press - Scott Morrison and successive Liberal Governments have gutted funding from Australia’s most trusted news organisation, the ABC, and have raided journalists home. Democracy is under attack in Australia. Don’t let Scott Morrison and his team erode it any further. I spoke recently about trust in democracy - you can see that here. https://youtu.be/tFFNxVKBkEo

21.01.2022 From today, cuts and changes to the JobKeeper scheme will see local businesses and workers lose access completely, while others will have their payments slashed by between $300 and $750 per fortnight. This decision is going to: negatively impact 37,910 workers in the ACT. ... leave 9,976 businesses worse off. rip $33,777,376 per fortnight out of the local ACT economy This is a shocking decision. I want to know what Zed Seselja has to say to these businesses and workers.

21.01.2022 To day I want to acknowledge specifically the Uni students here in Canberra who are just now finishing their semester two exams. Congratulations on your resilience and for getting through this difficult year!!... Students have had a particularly tough time this year. They’ve lost their jobs at a high rate and have been unable to access Jobkeeper because they're casuals, they’ve been forced to take classes online, many have been forced to return home away from their new lives in Canberra. What’s worse they’re seeing funding being cut to their degrees by a callous Government and the graduating cohort are entering an increasingly unstable job market. These young people are an inspiration to me, and I'll continue to advocate for Government to support them better. They are the future leaders of this country and I can’t wait to see the path they take us down in the coming years.

21.01.2022 Thanks to The Deaf Society and Deaf Services for organising the Auslan Community Leaders Challenge to celebrate Australia's Deaf Community on International Day of Sign Languages. #AuslanCommunityLeadersChallenge2020 #Auslan #InternationalDayofSignLanguages #IWODP #IDSL2020 #IWDeaf2020

19.01.2022 Ben, Paul and I are thrilled to welcome a little girl into our family! Elena Patricia Phillips was born at Canberra Hospital on Monday morning weighing 3.48kg. We are all doing well. Paul is very excited about his new little sister and is being a beautiful big brother Thank you to the amazing midwives, doctors and staff at the Canberra Hospital for all the care we received. Everyday you are there for families at what is a momentous and vulnerable time and the professionalism, dedication and heart that you bring to it makes all the difference.

19.01.2022 September is Save the Koala Month and it’s never been more important. The World Wildlife Foundation recently reported that more than 70% of NSW’s Koala population were killed in the Black Summer bushfires. Koala habitats are being destroyed at record rates by the Berejiklian Government in their land clearing crusade. There is a real possibility that our beloved Koala could go extinct.... We need to do better. We can start by amending Australia’s environmental laws to implement mandatory national environmental standards and create an independent environmental protection agency. You can see my speech these laws here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mHul4pE6bw&t=417s

18.01.2022 Today is world Pneumonia Day. Globally, Pneumonia is the world’s leading cause of death for children under 5 - every 20 seconds a child will die of the disease. It also happens to be one of the most easily solvable problems in global health. Most cases of the disease can be easily treated with antibiotics however only a third of infected children will receive this medication.... Unfortunately, COVID-19 has dramatically increased the rate of pneumonia with estimates of an extra 1.9 million deaths in 2020 alone. I’m calling on the Government to increase our Foreign Aid support for developing nations battling this crisis. We can end pneumonia deaths, it just takes a bit of will. #StopPneumonia #EveryBreathCounts https://stoppneumonia.org/

17.01.2022 The Morrison Government seeks to silence debate and avoid scrutiny however they can. This is standard behaviour for them in Parliament.

17.01.2022 Wishing the Jewish community here in Canberra a happy Rosh Hashanah. I hope your new year is filled with peace, prosperity and blessings.

16.01.2022 Climate action is a threat requiring a whole of society response. Lyneham Commons knows this and is helping to drive community-led solutions. Lyneham commons have created an amazing showcase of sustainable living, which serves to educate the community on how we can all adapt our lives to a post-carbon future. It was also great to chat about the soon-to-be installed water tank I helped get $10,000 funding for! ... These natural spaces: Keep our city beautiful. Encourage people to think and act in a sustainable manner. Brings community members together. Can’t get much better than that!

16.01.2022 Let's face the challenges ahead of us with compassion and kindness. That's the message I want to send to my fellow Canberrans and to my Parliamentary colleagues this World Kindness Day. Let's make kindness the norm. ... #WorldKindnessDay #MakeKindnesstheNorm

16.01.2022 Australia is so lucky to have such a unique natural environment, filled with an incredible array of plants and animals, but currently they are under serious threat. We need to do everything we can to protect our environment and biodiversity. Vital to this are strong, effective environmental protection laws. ... It’s incredibly concerning that this Biodiversity month has been marked by Liberal attempts to ram through a dodgy Bill weakening our environment laws. Labor is fighting this. https://www.theguardian.com//labor-to-vote-against-morriso

15.01.2022 Grant available Wednesday is the final day to submit an expression of interest for the Local Sporting Champions Grant! The application process won't take you long at all and is a great way to help support local under-18 sporting champs. ... If you’re interested, or know a local sports star that may be, make sure you get your application in before Wednesday night! https://www.sportaus.gov.au/grants/local_sporting_champions

14.01.2022 The Morrison Government’s obsession with freezing your super is clearly ideological, not based on what is best for your retirement or your wages. Labor created Australia’s exemplary superannuation system and will stand up for the right of all Australians to a decent retirement.

13.01.2022 Make no mistake, the loss of a further 215 jobs at The Australian National University is the fault of the Morrison Government, which has actively undermined the viability of Australian universities during the pandemic. These job losses mean another 215 Canberrans will be out of work, in addition to the 230 ANU redundancies already made this year. The Morrison Government doesn’t have a plan for economic recovery and the neglect of our universities proves this once again. https://www.anu.edu.au/covid-/campus-community/anu-recovery

13.01.2022 Given the huge strain of COVID-19 on people’s mental health, the refurbishment of the Mental Health Foundation ACT O’Connor Respite is extremely timely. It was a privilege to be able to work with the Mental Health Foundation to get $10,000 of funding support for this project through the Stronger Communities Programme. The grant enabled the MHF to refurbish the house and it looks fabulous. To all those doing it tough at the moment, please look after your mental health. We wi...ll get through this. 12.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

12.01.2022 A great announcement from ACT Labor, with plans for a further 5 Walk-in Health centres, including one in the Inner South! I know the newly opened Dickson Walk-in centre has been very useful for our Inner North community and no doubt a centre will be welcomed by residents of the Inner South. These centres will have nurse-practitioners and offer a range of health services that will help Canberrans to access free healthcare and ease pressure on our emergency departments.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to Prof Jodie Bradby and her team at ANU Research School of Physics Jodie invited me into her lab during science week last year to smash some diamonds, an experiment that was a precursor to this discovery. https://www.canberratimes.com.au//australian-scientists-/

11.01.2022 Wishing the Canberra Hindu Community a blessed and happy Diwali!

11.01.2022 Very sad to hear today of the death of Susan Ryan. Susan was a trailblazer and leader in the fight for women’s rights, and proudly from our ACT Branch. She was the first ACT Labor Senator, first Labor woman on the front bench and then in cabinet, and she was the first minister with responsibility for the women’s portfolio. It was under her leadership that the Sex Discrimination Act was legislated. Susan will be deeply missed and my thoughts are with her family and those closest to her.

11.01.2022 It has been such a precious time for my family as we have welcomed Elena. Time to recover from birth, time to get to know Elena, time to care for Paul as he makes this big adjustment, and Ben being able to take some time with us has been so important. This is why, even during a pandemic when businesses are doing it tough, I won’t stop fighting for secure work and conditions - it is vital to our economic recovery as well. Ben and I are lucky that The Australian National University has nation-leading parental leave available. But it shouldn’t be up to luck parental leave should be easily accessible for everyone and Government has a role in strengthening this and ensuring Australians have job security.

10.01.2022 This decision impacts 2.5 million pensioners.

09.01.2022 Today the JobSeeker payment is being cut. 22,764 people in the ACT will be worse off as the coronavirus supplement is slashed. It is going to rip $6.8 million dollars a fortnight out of the local economy. ... At a time of immense economic uncertainty, this is a very bad decision from the Liberal Government. https://www.canberratimes.com.au//more-than-22000-canberr/

07.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer. In 1985, 35 years ago, the world met in Vienna and agreed to huge reforms in order to help restore the growing hole in the Ozone layer.... These reforms have worked. Together we cut out 99% of all ozone-depleting substances. Because of this, the hole is closing and is expected to return to pre 1980 conditions by the middle of the century. What happened in 1985, and the fact that the world followed through, proves that collective action can change the world. It is important we remember this when tackling issues like climate change we can have an impact when we follow the science and take the necessary action. #ozoneforlife

06.01.2022 Belconnen High School used their Local Schools Community Grant to invest in their incredible sound and lighting capabilities. Great to be able to secure $10,000 for this project. ... I couldn’t believe how professional their set-up was and it was so great to hear about how the project engaged their talented students. Can’t wait to get out and watch a performance someday soon!

05.01.2022 What a lovely day to open a beautiful garden at Holy Trinity Primary School in Curtin today. Thanks to Principal Philippa Brearley and her students for such a kind welcome. Fantastic to be able to support this project with a $15,000 Local Schools Community Grant, alongside the incredible work of the Parents & Friends Association, teachers, students and staff. I’m sure the students will continue to enjoy and learn in this fantastic garden for many years to come! ... Catholic Education- Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn

05.01.2022 A sad day today with the death of the incredible Ruth Bader Ginsburg. What a contribution she has made to our world through her tireless fight for equality for women and the marginalised. She was an inspiration and a trailblazer who has left a huge legacy of progress. Thank you and vale Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
