23.01.2022 What does this mean This is when the muscles of the scapula (shoulder blade) are weak or paralysed, resulting in the scapula being unstable This can then lead to the scapula moving away from its alignment - winging out. There can be 2 reasons why this would occur: One reason is neurological - meaning the nerve is affected. The other reason is musculoskeletal. Muscles that can be affected are trapezius, latissimus dorsi, levator scapulae, rhomboid, serratus anterior... and pectoralis minor. Depending on the way the scapula has moved, it can tell us a lot about which muscle is/are affected. Spinous processes of T7 to L5 vertebrae (mid back to lower back region) Iliac crest of sacrum (around the area that you put hands on hips) The last 3-4 ribs Inferior angle of the scapula (lower border of the shoulder blade) - The actions of this muscle: Adduction of the arm at the shoulder (brings the arm towards the body) Medially rotates the arm at the shoulder (internally rolls the shoulder in) Extends the arm at the shoulder (brings the arm backwards) Rotation of the trunk (middle of the body) It also has a synergistic role (works with other muscles) to extend and laterally flex (side movement) of the lower spine.
