22.01.2022 Common posture problems Forward Head Posture is the most common postural defect found in computer operators. Round Shoulders is distinguished by the hunched over appearance it creates and is a poor posture that is often associated with office workers and computer operators.... Rotated Hips can be caused by holding a poor position for a long period of time, such as sitting at your desk twisting to write as well as looking at the computer. In severe cases, long term bad posture can lead to Scoliosis, a condition that results in the spine twisting from left to right, instead of running in a straight line from top to bottom. Depending on the severity, scoliosis of the spine can have a detrimental impact on vital organs, such as your heart, liver and kidneys. Regular chiropractic adjustments combined with consistent, appropriate exercise can go a long way to keeping your body strong. Even if you have rarely made time for fitness in the past, the sooner you get started the sooner you’ll reap the benefits.
20.01.2022 Intercostal Muscle Strain An intercostal (between the ribs) muscle strain is a common cause of rib pain. During contraction or stretch of the intercostals tension is placed through the muscles. When this tension is excessive due to too much repetition or high force, a tear in one or more of the intercostal muscles may occur causing pain in the rib cage. If you are suffering from an intercostal muscle strain you will typically experience a sudden, sharp pain or pulling sensa...tion in the side of the chest (often in the region of the lower ribs) during activities that place tension on the muscle. Intercostal muscle strain usually recovers fully over the course of 4-6 weeks if proper treatment is applied and if the muscle strain is mild. Severe muscle strain will take longer to heal. Chiropractic can help. Give us a call on 4927 2131.
19.01.2022 Muscles make up over half of the weight of a human body and they are required to make even the smallest of movements such as nodding your head or tapping your toe. A muscle strain, or pull, occurs when a muscle in your body is overstretched or overworked. There are 3 grades. All muscle strains include tearing of some muscle fibres: Grade I (mild): Very few muscle fibres have been injured. Pain may not be felt until the following day. No swelling or bruising is noted. Grade I...I (moderate): With this strain many muscle fibres are torn which results in a decrease in strength and often limited movement. Some muscle fibres remain uninjured and intact. Pain is present both when stretching the muscle and on muscle strength testing. Swelling and bruising may be noted. Grade III (severe): All fibres of the muscle are completely torn. Severe swelling, pain, and bruising accompany a grade III strain. A Chiropractor will be able to assess your injury as a whole. Correcting misaligned joints, massage, deeper ‘trigger point’ therapy and rehab exercises may be used among other approaches to improve blood flow and help repair the muscle.
17.01.2022 Chiropractic for back pain- Many back injuries are caused by recurrent micro-trauma, it means many small repetitive injuries, until the proverbial ‘last straw’. This is why many people often hurt themselves doing very normal, everyday things like bending down to pick something up. It doesn’t have to involve heavy lifting, it is more often caused by awkward movements. Once the injury has occurred and the nerve signals pain, the surrounding muscles go into a protective spasm to... help to splint the injured area. After a while the muscles become more and more painful. Quite often the pain in the tight muscle becomes more severe and takes over the symptoms. That is why it often feels muscular in nature but the cause of the problem is the injured joint, this is especially true if you have recurring problems. If left untreated, back pain can become more debilitating over time. Chiropractors recommend doing all you can to minimise the impact on your regular activities by seeking treatment at the first sign of pain.

15.01.2022 Work/life balance when working remotely. With so many of us working from home it can be difficult to maintain the distinction and remember that just because the office is in the next room, we still leave the office at the end of the workday. It can be helpful to try and maintain a routine that is healthy and as productive as reasonably possible. We no doubt realize by now that 'normal' life is vastly different than it was just weeks ago. In situations that that are so full of... change, being accepting and resilient is vital. Maintaining healthy routines that make time for rest, work, creativity and socially responsible (probably electronic) interaction with friends and family will help us through these tough times.

15.01.2022 We're almost at the weekend, we can do this.
14.01.2022 Chiropractors are all too aware of the importance of good workplace posture. Poor posture can lead to problems such as: Poor joint alignment General muscle aches Compression of disc and joint structures Reduced space for nerves to course through the body... Reduced blood flow to muscles With so many people working from home it can be difficult to be mindful of how we sit and work. You may not have the same ergonomic set up at home but there are still things you can do to help replicate it to some extent. Simple things like stacking books under the monitor to raise it to the correct height (and you thought you’d never use those old printed phone books again). You could also put a small step (or stack of old books) under your feet if you don’t have an adjustable chair at home.
14.01.2022 Continuing on from last week, the Queensland government has issued helpful advice to consider when selecting an office chair. While the home setting may not require all the same options it still gives some good points to consider: Adjustable office chairs An office chair should have the following features: ... adjustable seat height curved lower back (lumbar) support on backrest adjustable backrest height (allowing the lumbar support to be adjusted to suit the individual) adjustable backrest tilt (in the forward/backward direction). This is used in combination with the seat pan tilt to allow the user to make adjustments to help maintain the natural curve of the spine adjustable seat pan tilt (allowing the seat to tilt forwards slightly) a rounded front edge of the seat adjustment controls that are easy to operate from the seated position seat pan depth adjustment (by sliding the seat). This feature reduces the need to order chairs with different sized seats to suit shorter or taller workers a five-point base. A chair with five casters is less likely to tip over than one with four casters comfortable cushioning and covering on the seat and backrest. See more

12.01.2022 Chiropractic can help you reach your health and fitness goals. We know that we are all more motivated to make positive changes when we have a realistic goal that we genuinely want to achieve. Regular adjustments can help minimize pain and discomfort which helps us stay motivated and keep working hard for what we want. Nobody feels like exercising when they’re struggling with back pain or headaches, set yourself up for success by looking after a key part of your body’s foundation-your spine.
12.01.2022 Exercise to ease stress- A major benefit of exercise is that it’s very good at easing stress. Exercise especially when done right when the stress response is triggered burns off stress hormones instead of letting them pile up. Most forms of exercise done on a regular basis help relieve pent-up tension. Rhythmic, repetitive movements, such as walking, running and cycling actually elicit the relaxation response, too. Apart from the other obvious benefits of exercise, regularly engaging in these kinds of activities can also help you better cope with everyday stress.
11.01.2022 With so many of our patients working at home for the foreseeable future, we are going to take a closer look at good workplace ergonomics. The Queensland Government has published some helpful guidance for proper workstation setup. Over the coming weeks we’ll highlight some of this information. Hopefully these tips will help everyone to set up their home offices as effectively as possible. First up is the chair: An acceptable and well supported seated position means: sitting ...with the body close to the desk the head and neck are in a forward facing and midline position (i.e. no backward arching of the neck or forward extension of the chin) the shoulders are relaxed and symmetrical and elbows slightly closer to the side of the body using the preferred keying posture, depending on the style of keying used (i.e. traditional style or with forearm support see ‘Preferred keying set styles’ on page 9 of this guide) the back is supported by the chair backrest. The curved lower part of the backrest should fit into the lower back or the lumbar curve having an open angle of 100-120 degrees (slightly more than a right angle) at the hip. This can be achieved by adjusting the seat pan tilt and the backrest having knees at a height lower or level with the hips ensuring a gap of 2-3 finger widths between the front of the chair and the back of the knees having feet flat on the floor or footrest. 11.01.2022 Continuing our highlights from the Queensland government’s workplace ergonomics guidelines, we now consider the desk or workstation. There are many different configurations for computer based workstations available. Computer based workstations should be designed to allow adequate height, depth and work surface to suit the user, the type of work they do and the equipment they use. The workstation should have the following features: a flat smooth surface for the keyboard an...d mouse so they can be used on the same level space to position all the equipment so that posture or vision is not compromised when completing tasks a suitable height (e.g. 680-720 mm when measured from the top of the workstation to the floor) adequate clearance for legs under the desktop sufficient space under the desk to comfortably stretch legs See more
10.01.2022 Making time for exercise and fresh air can give us a boost physically, mentally, and emotionally. For those fortunate enough to have the freedom to get outside and get active, why not take advantage and enjoy the sunshine?
10.01.2022 Healing is a complex process, and pain shouldn’t be ignored. No one wants to deal with pain, certainly not long-term pain. Its amazing, however, how many people have adapted to their aches and discomforts to the point that they feel it’s ‘normal’ for them. Chiropractic aims to restore the body’s own balance and strength so that the patient can function at their best with as little pain as possible. In addition to adjusting patients, our chiropractors are happy to recommen...d specific exercises and nutritional changes to help them get stronger and feel better. Pain often occurs only after months, years or even decades of problems that haven’t been corrected. The length of time a problem has been present often effects how quickly the body is able to repair itself. Obviously the sooner a problem is addressed, the sooner healing can begin. And if any issues are caught in their early stages they can be corrected before most symptoms arise, that’s why many Chiropractors recommend a maintenance schedule of care to their patients. Prevention and maintenance are always the best and most beneficial options. See more
09.01.2022 Spinal Health & the Nervous System The spine covers and protects the spinal cord of the nervous system. The nervous system controls every cell, tissue and organ in the body. Poor posture may cause the spine to go out of its natural alignment, affecting the ability of the nervous system to control body functions. If the spine is out of alignment, even just slightly, pressure may be put on the spinal nerve disrupting the nervous system. Today’s technologies, in the form of home... entertainment, mobile phones, computers and game consoles mean that more people than ever are adopting poor posture in favour of being active. Sitting for extended periods of time whilst slouched in a chair may affect our spinal health. Its important to be more aware of our posture and to take regular exercise to prevent health problems later in life. In many cases, good posture and regular exercise may also prevent the symptoms of pre-existing spinal health conditions becoming worse.
06.01.2022 Sacroiliac Joint Pain and Dysfunction: Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) which is a large joint in your lower back connecting your sacrum to your pelvis, can sometimes cause lower back and/or leg pain. Dysfunction of this joint basically means that it is not operating normally. The primary mechanisms of SIJ dysfunction include:... Too much movement in the SIJ can cause the pelvis to feel unstable and lead to pain. This pain is typically felt in the lower back and/or hip and may radiate into the groin area. Not enough movement can cause muscle tension, pain, and may inhibit mobility. This pain is typically felt on one side of the low back or buttocks and can radiate down the back of the leg like sciatica pain. Chiropractic treatments for SIJ dysfunction typically focus on alleviating pain and restoring normal motion in the joint. Most cases of SIJ pain can be effectively managed using Chiropractic care.
06.01.2022 Shockwave Therapy is now available at Aligned Chiropractic! 04.01.2022 The wrong shoes can give you a sore back. The health of your feet can affect the biomechanics of the whole body, particularly the legs and low back. The natural motion of the foot is to roll inward (pronate) after making contact with the ground. Pronation allows the foot to adapt to the contour of the ground and act as a shock absorber for the body. Too much pronation will cause the arch of the foot to flatten excessively, placing stress and pressure on the tissues and ligame...nts of the foot. Over-pronation can lead to numerous problems including plantar fasciitis, ankle pain, shin pain, knee pain, bunions and low back pain. Chiropractors can adjust the feet, knees, hips and pelvis according to individual patient needs. If over-pronation is advanced or you spend a lot of time on your feet or participate in sport, orthotics might be helpful. Chiropractors can also advise if a visit to a qualified podiatrist would be helpful.
04.01.2022 Similar to an oil change in your car, maintenance Chiropractic is necessary for your spine to function at its best and avoid needless problems. Stay healthy and active; Chiropractic can help.
03.01.2022 Regardless of the type of adjustment your chiropractor does, movement immediately after is almost always a good thing. An adjustment stimulates the nervous system. We have plasticity in our nervous system which allows our nerves to adapt over time as a result of stimulation (or lack thereof) from our environment. A positive example is seen with balance exercise a person with poor balance can improve by frequently exercising balance muscles. This stimulates the nerves to form new connections and over time balance improves. A 5 or 10-minute walk after an adjustment gets the body used to moving and assists with positive plasticity in your nervous system. So, if your circumstances allow, try to take a short walk to get the maximum benefit from your treatment.
02.01.2022 Here’s another bit of useful information from the Worksafe Queensland website. This one is perhaps especially useful because many of us are working from laptop computers at the moment. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Laptop computers are designed for short-term or mobile use. They are very convenient but can challenge good working postures. When using a laptop for significant periods, or when being used as a desk top replacement, use separate components (full sized pe...ripherals) that allow for better posture and can be independently adjusted. Components include docking stations, external monitors, external keyboard and mouse, laptop stands. We hope these posts have been helpful. Its by no means an exhaustive list and hopefully more and more of us will be returning to our normal work arrangements soon. In the meantime, if you want more information please check out the Ergonomic Guide to Computer Based Workstations at worksafe.qld.gov.au
01.01.2022 Numbness and tingling can affect people of all ages. Often, numbness or tingling may result from underlying compression of the nerve roots as they exit the spine caused by spinal misalignments or subluxations. Other causes are a ‘pinched’ nerve in other parts of the body or if blood flow is restricted to the affected area. The pins and needles feeling we get when our foot falls asleep is the most common type of numbness and tingling. In isolated incidents, such as falling a...sleep on your arm and waking up to it being numb or tingling, this is normal. However, if numbness and tingling occur regularly without obvious explanations, or if it lasts more than a few minutes, it may be a symptom of a serious underlying condition. These conditions can include herniated disc, nerve trauma, inflammation and multiple sclerosis to name a few. Chiropractors, by making specific and gentle chiropractic adjustments to the spine (and other parts of the body), help to relieve nerve compression caused by misalignment.
