23.01.2022 Following on from an earlier post about facial expression and pain, if the atlas ( first cervical vertebra) is out of alignment with the back of the skull ( the... area known as the poll) there can be physiological changes such as headaches, vision problems that can not only affect behavior but movement as well. Head tossing, difficulty going in one direction, trouble picking up leads are some examples. There can even be changes when we look at the face of the horse in terms of ear placement and the shape and direction of the eyes. The size of the muscles over the eyes and over the frontal bones. Have a feel of your horse. Place your hands behind the ears and feel the gap between the back of the skull and the wing of the atlas. Compare left and right, do they feel even? One side tighter than the other, or feel more forward than the other? How does your horse react when touched in this area? Just hold the tissue with your fingers, either between the gap, or gently on the side of the vertebra and behind the ear. Feel for the shift in the fascia, sense change and notice what reactions your horse may be giving you blinking, lip licking, chewing, even a yawn. All signs of release. This may take 30 seconds or a few minutes, be guided by your horse. Step back and then notice and observe behavior, posture, movement, expression. See more

20.01.2022 Youve probably heard us tell you before: Never ride your horse on an empty stomach! Riding your horse on an empty stomach will put him at risk of stomach ulce...rs. Stomach ulcers hurt! So in an attempt to avoid the pain your horse may misbehave to stop you riding him. Or he may grudgingly work for you, but will be sour and unhappy. Neither is fun for both of you. But there is an easy solution! Keep your horses stomach full. Heres a guide to how much hay you should feed your horse before work. Want to learn more? 12.01.2022 We all know how amazing horses are, this is yet another beautiful example

10.01.2022 Want to know why most OTTBs (off the track thoroughbreds) are hard keepers? Keep reading! Fact - More than 80% of Australian racehorses are fed corn and MOST of... this corn is fed raw or uncooked. We know, from multiple scientific studies, that the starch from raw corn is not well digested in a horses small intestine. So most of the large amounts of starch from corn ends up in the hindgut. This starch feeds the bad bacteria. Their population rapidly increases, and they very quickly create an environment our poor little, fibre loving good bacteria cannot survive in..... So they die. By the time you get your OTTB, most of the bacteria in their hindgut will be starch and sugar fermenters. These guys DO NOT LIKE fibre. Fibre fermentation is hard work, the bad bacteria tend to shy away from it. Which means, most OTTBs dont have much chance of digesting much fibre. Which is why it feels like you are feeding them a small mountain of feed, and it goes nowhere. It does actually go somewhere. It goes in their mouth, through their gut, and out as manure. Problem is it doesnt really get very well digested. This is what earns them the title of Hard Keeper! Want to know how to fix it? And make them normal again? Watch this space, we will tell you tomorrow..... See more

10.01.2022 Check this detailed collaborative article on the complex subject of saddle fitting evaluation. Thanking Equine Veterinary Education for allowing us to post the ...full article https://rdcu.be/bUbLu Saddles and feet evaluations were major components of any horse/rider assessment in our practice. Kerry started teaching extensive saddle fitting courses in the 90s mainly for Equinology, Inc. He also produced the DVD "Saddle Fitting from A to Z". 09.01.2022 Something to think about

08.01.2022 Over the last week, Helen has had a number of clients seeking assistance with both dogs and horses being affected by the increased smoke due to the NSW bushfire...s (Australia). So here are some remedies to have on hand that may help everyone to cope with these current conditions. As irritating as smoke can be to people, it can cause health problems for animals as well. Animals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease are especially at risk from smoke. Some of the symptoms of the effects of smoke can be: Coughing or gagging Difficulty breathing, Eye irritation and excessive watering Nasal discharge Asthma-like symptoms Increased breathing rate Fatigue or weakness Disorientation or stumbling Reduced appetite and/or thirst There are a lot of homeopathic remedies that will aid in both the mental and physical effects of bushfires for both people and animals. The Major Remedies to have on hand... * For bruises, apply Arnica ointment or Traumeel ointment and take arnica orally. * For trauma, fear and stress take Aconite orally * For irritated eyes use a herbal eyewash to rinse the eyes. Homeopathic pharmacies and some natural health food stores have herbal eye rinses that comprise of calendula (marigold), Hydrastis (goldenseal), Chamomile, and Euphrasia (eyebright) are all wonderfully soothing herbs for irritated eyes. You can make your own infusion by adding a handful of one or more of these herbs, fresh or dried, to a pint of freshly boiled distilled water. Cover and let it steep until cool, then strain. Be sure that the infusion is clear. Homeopathic remedies for smoke exposure symptoms - here are a few * Arsenicum Album: For smoke exposure with anxiety. Eyes burn and stream. Nose burns and streams. Cough is dry and worse at night. * Euphrasia: For simple smoke exposure with irritation to eyes and possibly nose and no other symptoms. * Kali bichromicum: For more serious smoke exposure with irritated sinuses and/or lungs. Nose is blocked - nasal discharge is dry or comes out in sticky or stringy plugs. Sinuses are sore, raw, irritated and painful. Cough is painful. Chest is sore. Mucus coughed up with difficulty and is scanty and sticky or stingy. * Natrum arsenicum: Great sensitivity to smoke. Eyes dry and painful and stream. Sinuses feel blocked and painful. Rattling cough. Lungs feel full of smoke. Headache from the smoke. * Bryonia. For soreness in larynx and trachea. Hoarseness, worse in open air. Dry, hacking cough from irritation in upper trachea.. Difficult, quick respiration. * Carbo Vegetabilis. Wheezing cough with burning in chest. Shortness of breath. Oxygen starvation, exhausted, weak How to take homeopathic remedies: Take 6C, 12C or 30C, 3 times a day, 20 minutes away from food and drink, stopping on improvement and repeating as needed i.e. if symptoms return. If you or your animal are taking a remedy for 2 days with no improvement select a different remedy or consult a homeopath. Local health food stores and homeopathic pharmacies usually have most homeopathic remedies in stock alternatively contact Helen or your local homeopath. When thinking about what we eat , anti-oxidants can help combat inflammation caused by smoke via oxidative damage. Take vitamin C supplement or food with high vitamin C content (cabbage, sweat green paper, oranges, strawberry, black currant, papaya, pineapple, kiwi, cantaloupe) and other anti-oxidants. Vitamin A - helps keep the mucus lining of the lungs healthy to adequately expel the offending particulate matter (particles and smoke). Take supplement or food high in vitamin A (liver, fish oil, eggs, orange and red vegetables; carrot, broccoli). Unfortunately I do not know of a homeopathic remedy that will create rain !.. as we so desperately need it.

07.01.2022 The calming effects of Bowen Therapy

06.01.2022 Keep your horses stomach full. Especially before you ask him to work! Why? Because the horses stomach has been designed to always be full. Horses secrete str...ong hydrochloric acid in the lower section of their stomach. So the lower section was smart enough to protect itself with thick mucus. That way the acid doesnt burn the flesh. BUT, the top part of the stomach is totally unprotected from the acid. It was protected only by the fact the horses stomach was always full of fibre. This fibre was able to stop the acid from the lower part of the stomach from splashing to the top part. Heres what this would look like if you could see into your horses stomach (an excerpt from our ebook My Horse Is Crazy, My Horse Is Lazy). If you havent already, get your free copy of the ebook here: feedxl.com/ebook

03.01.2022 EQUINE BACK MOTION A lot of people have been asking on the earlier saddle post today about how much the horses back moves during exercise. There are a fair numb...er of papers now published on this but visuals are always good. Here is a short video of a horse walking and trotting on a treadmill viewed from above with painted markers along the spine and IMUs (orange) to record motion. Replayed at half normal speed Copyright Dr David Marlin 2020.

02.01.2022 A saddle that is incorrectly balanced can drastically change the position of the rider. Small changes can be made by adjusting the flocking on a wool flocked saddle to help correct the riders balance and make the world of difference.
