19.01.2022 DO ALIGNERS HURT?!. Well, the answer is yes and no. You see, when your teeth are first starting to move (in the first week or so), they need time to get adapt to having increased force on them. So, the teeth are definitely more tender in the first week. That is the same as if you started lifting weights or going for a run, the first few days your muscles will be quite sore also. What this means is you may find yourself on a softer diet for the first week. It is quite ra...re to need pain killers, most people just put up with the very short-term tenderness. One of the best things about clear aligners is that you get to change over to the next aligner at home. Why is that a good thing? Well, you see, with braces, normally the doctor will tighten the wire enough to provide force for 6-8 weeks until they see you next. But with aligners, as you change over at home every 1-2 weeks, the force per aligners is a lot lower meaning the discomfort in aligners (when compared to braces) is a lot lower! As you go along in aligner treatment, you will find that the discomfort almost becomes unnoticeable especially if your compliance is good and you’re keeping that low constant pressure I mentioned previously. The only time you’ll feel more pressure is the first few hours after you change to a new aligner, but as the saying goes, no pain, no gain! In summary, expect the first week to be uncomfortable, and expect every new aligner to renew the pressure for the first few hours but overall, there is no to minimal pain during treatment. The most important thing you can do to ensure there is minimal pain is to keep very good compliance and wear them very well! Oh and remember to change over at night before bed, rather than in the morning. 17.01.2022 COMPLIANCE . . .... The single most important obstacle of getting your dream result with clear aligner treatment is compliance. DO NOT go ahead with clear aligner treatment if you are not prepared to wear them for more than 22 hours a day. If you do not think you can do this, you are wasting your time and your money and will only be left very sad down the track. I’m not saying if you have one bad day here and there it’ll be a disaster, as having a bad day every few months generally won’t affect treatment very much. But if you have bad days often your teeth simply won’t move, or move slower than expected, which means your aligners will generally stop fitting well which could give you a lisp, make you project spit when you talk and overall feel uncomfortable. You can’t cheat biology and that is why you have to commit to wearing them. The best way I can explain how tooth movement works is there needs to be a light, CONSTANT force applied on the tooth in the direction it is moving towards. This light constant force allows the teeth to slowly and safely glide. If you were to put heavy or infrequent force, the tooth will move slightly but the ligaments around it may injure and result in severe pain and potentiaL long-term consequences. Think of it as if you’re trying to move a truck, you want to put constant pushing force while its moving rather than pushing, waiting for it to stop, then using a lot of force to get it moving again.
