22.01.2022 A COVID-19 screening clinic is now open at Maitland Hospital. The clinic will be open until 4pm today. From tomorrow, the Maitland clinic will be open from 10a...m-4pm - Monday to Friday. HNE Health is continuing to monitor the number of people coming through our Emergency Departments and reviewing the need for further screening clinics. Many of our GPs are also doing a great job ensuring people who meet the criteria are screened. We are working closely with the Primary Health Network to ensure a coordinated approach to screening and testing, and will update the community of any further developments. 14.01.2022 Essential oils have been found to have activity against viruses, bacteria, and fungus. Here are just some of their amazing antimicrobial properties: Lavender: ...Herpes, Staph aureus (including MRSA), Candida Thyme: H1N1 influenza, Strep strains that cause cavities & strep throat Peppermint: Herpes, Candida Cinnamon: H1n1 influenza virus, Staph aureus, Candida Clove: Herpes, Candida Tea Tree: Herpes, Candida What about coronavirus? There aren’t many studies looking at essential oil activity against coronaviruses, and there are NO studies looking at essential oil activity specifically against the currently circulating 2019 novel Coronavirus. BUT... There was one essential oil that was found to have possible activity against SARS-CoV in the sputum of a patient hospitalized with SARS - a coronavirus similar to the 2019 novel Coronavirus, also known as SARS-CoV-2. And that was: . . . SAGE, or Salvia officinalis While I’m not suggesting you make a run for sage essential oil (NOTE: this is different than clary sage), I wanted to let you know of another option to have in your toolkit for coronavirus prevention. As a pediatrician who may be at Ground Zero for an influx of patients with possible COVID-19, I know I’ll be doing everything I can to protect my patients, staff, me & my family - and that includes essential oils. So here’s what I’ll be doing: Diffusing essential oils in our lobby, exams rooms and at home with a combination of Sage EO + other antimicrobial EOs (remember, it’s not just coronavirus out there. There’s still plenty of influenza circulating) Adding Sage EO + other antimicrobial EOs to my hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol Adding sage, thyme, and other antimicrobial herbs like oregano, basil, and marjoram to my cooking, along with loads of garlic - yum! Remember, washing hands with soap & water is best, but next best is a >60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer. For proper handwashing technique & a homemade hand sanitizer recipe, be sure to read my blog: Handwashing & Coronavirus: Are you doing it the right way? (https://healthykidshappykids.com//handwashing-coronavirus/). Stay well! xo Holistic mama doc - Elisa Song, MD Reference: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6612361/

11.01.2022 Interesting link to an unusual symptom that many people infected with COVID-19 have reported. Loss of ability to smell or taste. Doctors in the UK are now asking people who develop this to self isolate.

09.01.2022 As it turns out, there’s a lot we know about how to create the most beneficial genetic expression, and it’s a lot simpler than you would think. The same things ...that drive inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular damage can also cause unfavorable genetic expression. The crappy, ultra-processed diets that are high in sugar, starch, gluten, and artificial junk are the cause of our genetic woes. But luckily, one of the most effective tools we have to protect ourselves can be found at the end of your fork. I talk all about nutrigenomics and how to eat for longevity in my Longevity Roadmap docu-series. Be sure to share this information with your friends and family, so you can grow healthier, for longer, together. You can sign up and watch today at LongevityFilm.com
09.01.2022 Anxiety and sleep problems are amongst the most common issues folks are struggling with these days. It’s no wonder - with all the stress in the world, and at ho...me, a lot of us are jacked up our cortisol, adrenaline, and we're feeling it. The conventional medical answer? Benzos and sleeping pills. The problem is, that while in severe cases they may be necessary, the side-effects are potentially serious. Benzos are dangerously addictive, affect short-term memory and focus, long-term cognitive function even years after discontinuing their use, and overdose can lead to death. One popular sleep medication was responsible for over 600 car accidents, some of them serious, in women who had taken their medication as prescribed the night before. But because of women's slower metabolism than men, the dose was too high - women were essentially driving drunk. Passion flower is a folk remedy still popular among herbalists for general sleep disturbances, perimenopausal sleep disturbances, depression, and anxiety, and it’s got solid science to back it up. The name passion flower comes from the passion of Christ. I like to think of it as passion flower because who feels much passion for anything when you’re exhausted from no sleep, or anxious. Historically it has also been used for chronic pain, hot flashes, and tension to name a few. I find it helpful with magnesium and B6 for PMS symptoms. In Europe physicians prescribe it for tenseness, restlessness, irritability, and difficulty falling asleep. A small number of clinical studies also confirm its use for improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety. It’s totally safe while you’re breastfeeding. There’s too little data to recommend it for regular use in pregnancy, so I generally lean into other approaches for pregnant mamas, which I teach about in my Pregnancy Pathway which you can access now thru mid-February for free on Facebook at #ideservebirthsupport. I recommend using it nightly, 2 dropper-fulls in cup of water, to be repeated if you wake during the night due to sleep troubles, or if using capsules, follow the dose on the package. 04.01.2022 Surviving this crisis will take a shift in mindset, and that’s tougher than we think - especially when we’re afraid. Fear and anxiety can drive us to become ve...ry self-focused. This global pandemic is a real case of getting sick together or staying well together. Our choices affect everyone around us. There is no such thing as individual risk or individual wellness. This is the ultimate reminder that we are inextricably connected to each other. Turning away from collective action right now - as tempting as it is - will only generate more pain. Owning and embracing our global interconnectedness (from a safe distance) and thinking about others as we make choices is, ironically, our only path to safety for ourselves and the people we love. We can all get really shitty really fast when we’re afraid. I get it. I’m using deep breaths along with my personal mantra: Try to be scared without being scary. Feel free to borrow both - they can help. It’s also really normal for everyone to be on our nerves: The people who aren’t following the rules, the 10-second hand washers, etc. I get that too. TRUST ME. But, like it or not, we just can’t give up on people. We’re all we have. Stay awkward, brave, and kind. Love each other. Spread calm. xo, BB
