25.01.2022 SPRING IS IN THE AIR! Nature has a wonderful way of lifting our spirits and giving us hope. As we start to emerge from the cold winter hibernation governed by the Water Element and the emotions of ‘fear and worry’, we move towards the WOOD element associated with the organs of the LIVER and GALL BLADDER, the colour ‘green’ and the taste of ‘sour’. When we are out of balance, the emotions that often arise during this time are ‘anger & frustration.’ We need to be mindful that ...during lockdown we may not be as active as we usually are, being isolated, working from home computers, shopping online and socializing via video calls. This inactivity and sedentary lifestyle may cause our energy to become ‘stagnant’ or ‘stuck’, which can make us feel more angry, frustrated or depressed and if left unaddressed, may even lead to disease. In Oriental Medicine, it is the LIVER that is responsible for the smooth flow of ‘chi’ throughout the body, so this is the season to keep our Liver in balance. By becoming self-aware, we can take action now to ensure we develop good habits to improve our circulation, encourage lymphatic drainage and promote a healthy immune system. Whilst we are temporarily unable to access therapies such as Shiatsu, there are still many ways we can keep our energy flowing whether we are indoors or outside, preferably without a mask on. Here are my Top 7 recommendations you can message me for more information on any of these techniques: 1. Do-in self massage (ancient Chinese technique) 2. Makko-Ho Stretching (traditional Japanese sequence of meridian stretches) 3. Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi 4. Deep breathing exercises (Box breathing, 4-7-8 Breathing, Wim Hof Method) 5. Tapping (ancient body tapping and modern EFT) 6. Dancing (Free form) 7. Jumping (on a rebounder/ mini trampoline, with a rope or bouncing on the ground). Spring is the season of new beginnings and a time for growth, reaching new heights, creativity and expression. After all the suppression over the last few months, now is the time to burst with energy, shake off any anger or frustration, surround yourself with the colour green and include some sour flavours in your diet. Let’s all allow our spirits to be lifted so we can express ourselves, move our bodies freely and maintain a positive outlook Namaste, Aliki If you would like more information on any of the techniques listed above, please contact me via personal message or email [email protected]

12.01.2022 Without the dark, we'd never see the stars... Happy Winter Solstice!

08.01.2022 MOVING INTO WINTER: Well done to those that survived Autumn which was a particularly vulnerable time for our immune systems. In my Lunar New Year post, I highlighted the Chinese saying All rivers will become one ocean and this is already proving to be true as the whole world has needed to come together to tackle this pandemic we are facing. We are in the midst of waves of change and this year of the White Metal Rat will continue to be challenging, especially for our immun...e system and the Metal organs of the Lungs, Large Intestine & Skin. As we are now entering into the colder climate of Winter, the WATER element also comes into play and we need to start focusing on our KIDNEYS & BLADDER. When these organs are out of balance the main symptoms we may notice include lower backache, pain or weakness in hips, knees, ankles or feet, anxiety, fear, panic attacks, adrenal fatigue, urinary problems, occipital headaches, tinnitus or dizziness. Other signs may be groaning, dark circles under eyes and a lack of willpower. The easiest way to nourish your KIDNEYS is to get plenty of rest, do gentle exercise (Yoga, Tai chi, Qigong, stretching), warm and massage the lower back and feet, calm the mind with meditation and engage in creative activities such as writing, drawing, cooking, etc. Eating warm, hearty, slow-cooked meals and dark, blood-nourishing foods is encouraged. SHIATSU is the perfect kind of bodywork for nurturing the KIDNEYS and balancing the BLADDER energy during Winter, as you remain fully clothed, cosy and warm under a blanket! As many of us are coming out of isolation, it is important to continue strengthening our immune system and getting our energy (chi) moving again. There is some irony in the fact that restrictions are being lifted as we head into Winter, which is normally a time for hibernation - where we are usually encouraged to retreat, rest, reflect and replenish. So, my advice would be to listen to your body, move slowly with a degree of awareness, rest when you need to and stay warm. The lower back area is particularly vulnerable to the cold so it would be wise to invest in a ‘Haramaki’ (kidney warmer) or even have a go at making one yourself! The good news is now that restrictions have eased, I too am able to resume practice, so I am open for bookings starting this week. Until we next meet, stay healthy & safe. Big warm air hugs Aliki

03.01.2022 AUTUMN & BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM: I’m sure you are all suffering from ‘Coronavirus info overload’ but whilst most of it is out of our control, there are many things we can do to help protect ourselves by strengthening our own immune system. Read on for my TOP 12 TIPS!... Unfortunately, the CORONAVIRUS outbreak is coinciding with the start of AUTUMN here in Australia. In Oriental Medicine, this season is associated with the METAL element and the LUNGS, LARGE INTESTINE & ...Continue reading
