25.01.2022 Cancer doesnt just affect the one with the diagnosis. Its the whole family and beyond. Its a lot of stress, its emotional and while dealing with these emotions theres often the feeling of having to be strong and supportive for the sick loved one. When my son Fraser was having treatment and we were spending a lot of time in hospital, I still had to be present for my two daughters. I felt pulled in different directions as to where I put my energy, and often there wasnt ...much left in the tank! I kept my head above water by utilising the tools I was fortunate enough to already have in my kit. Even though I had support from family and friends, at the end of the day it was me looking after myself and my family. So whenever it was possible I made a few things a priority: I went for good nutrition and cooked good healthy meals for the whole family, I made sure I got a good night sleep, I stayed connected to friends and family who I was close to and felt supported by and kept my distance from people who I felt drained my energy, I made the effort to turn up to my yoga class even when I didnt feel like it and it was always worth it! I leaned to say no to extra activities and engagements if I thought it would be too much in our schedule and make everyone tired and still stay yes to other catch ups or events I thought wed all enjoy. I took the opportunity to get some sort of exercise or at least some time outside when wed had long spells in hospital. And I remembered that its ok not to be perfect all the time. Never underestimate the effect that chronic high level stress can have on you when you are a carer and recognize when you need support. See more

20.01.2022 Happy New Year! If youve made a deal with yourself to really make your health a priority in 2019, well done! Its an important first step. Looking deeper into the cause of your health issu...es is where working with a Naturopath can really make the difference between a band aid fix (think coffee for energy and paracetamol for period pain) or lasting results that leave you feeling well and in control of your own health. 19.01.2022 Banana Date & Linseed Phytoestrogen Muffins By Isabell Ippolito Naturopath & Nutritionist These delicious muffins are my version of a recipe by Naturopath Sandra Villella. They are gluten free, free from added sugar, high in fibre and rich in phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are compounds found in many plants that are similar in chemical structure to that of oestrogen and have the ability to imitate some of the effects oestrogen, therefore may be beneficial in helping to re...lieve some of the symptoms of menopause. This recipe makes 12 muffins. Ingredients 24 dessertspoons freshly ground linseeds (approx 2 cups) 2 cups medjool dates (seeded and firmly packed) 3 large ripe bananas 1/2 cup boiling water 1/2 cup raw cacao 120g unsalted butter melted 4 eggs lightly beaten 1 teaspoon bicarb soda 1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon cinnamon Method In a large mixing bowl combine ground linseeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder and bicarb soda, stir until fully combined. In a food processor, blend dates and water until combined. Add bananas and process further until combined (try to keep the mix a little chunky). Add banana mix and butter to the dry mix and stir until combined. Add eggs stir until combined without over mixing Drop spoonfuls of mixture into prepared muffin tin with cases *note you can fill well as these do not rise much at all. Bake in oven at 180 degrees celsius for around 25-30mins Cool on wire rack or eat straight away they are yummy warm with some coconut yoghurt! See more

12.01.2022 I sometimes get asked if eating organic foods really does have any impact on our risk of getting cancer or not. This study was done on over 68,000 participants in France and shows that there certainly is a link between eating a diet high in organic foods and a lower risk of developing cancer, particularly breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, colorectal cancer and lymphomas. The dangers of pesticides in the work place have been documented before, but this is one of the first studies done on participants whose exposure to these chemicals comes from the diet. So, yes it is worth eating organic wherever possible to reduce your risk of cancer. sci-hub.tw/10.1001/jamainternmed.2018.4357

10.01.2022 Not sure when to buy Organic? Following on from my post last week about eating organic foods and the risk of cancer. Here is a really handy list called The Dirty Dozen and Clean 15.... The dirty dozen are grown with the most pesticides and are therefore best to buy organic and the clean 15 are OK to eat conventional. Compiled by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in the US the dirty dozen and clean 15 is just as relevant here in Australia. We know eating organic 100 % of the time can be a real challenge, so this list is handy guide so you know which fresh produce is safe to eat non organic and which is worth buying organic. The Dirty Dozen Buy these organic whenever possible Updated 2019 Strawberries Spinach Kale Nectarines Apples Grapes Peaches Cherries Pears Tomatoes Celery Potatoes The Clean 15 These are ok to buy conventional (not organic) Updated 2019 Avocados Sweet Corn* Pineapples Sweet Peas Frozen Onions Papayas Eggplants Asparagus Kiwi Cabbage Cauliflower Cantaloupe Broccoli Mushrooms Honeydew Melons *Some sweet corn can be a GMO crop so buy organic if you wish to avoid GMO.

10.01.2022 Firstly, why is period pain even a thing? Aint nobody got time for that, right? There are two main reasons- 1. during a period your uterus performs (hopefully...) tiny contractions that enable it to expel endometrium (period blood) and 2. during this time we also have heightened sensitivity of the pain receptors in this area, so it can be normal for your period to be a bit uncomfortable or as my sister used to say a bit stabby. Diet and lifestyle play a huge role in just how uncomfortable your period will be month to month. Yes, your period is worse after a month of extra stress, or more alcohol or a crappy diet. Everything we put in our bodies and how we look after them directly affects our hormones and how much pain you are likely to be in when your period decides to drop by. Personally, I think its kind of cool that as women we get a monthly report card of how our health is going and would love for more women to feel empowered by the insights our periods can bring us about our overall health. However, severe debilitating pain is not okay. And if you or someone you know is bed ridden or take time off work or school every month then this is a clear indication that a hormonal imbalance is at play. Often period pain can be a symptom of an underlying hormonal condition such as PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts or fibroids So if you dread your period because it often stops you from doing simple everyday tasks then it may be time to do some hormonal testing and investigate the cause. Something simple you can start right now though is increasing fibre- are you having 5 serves of vegetables every day? This can be a game changer for hormonal imbalances as it increased the clearance of excess hormones from the body. Especially broccoli, my favourite vegetable hands down. Add some more of that to your diet and see how it changes your next monthly report card.

10.01.2022 Gain a greater understanding around the hormonal changes leading up to the onset of menopause and discover what natural medicine options can assist you to navigate this stage of life. Well be talking about sleep disturbances, hot flushes, anxiety, nutrition and more. Look forward to seeing you here at Remed Lower Plenty.

03.01.2022 On the 4th day of Xmas my naturopath said to me: "get some ZZZs". Its easy when were busy to sacrifice sleep. Other activities might seem more important. For s...ome of us, just a few late nights is enough to disrupt the sleep/wake cycle, getting us into unhealthy patterns and relationship with sleep. This then can become a vicious cycle called insomnia, and is associated with hyper- arousal, an adrenalised state where the brain stars to look for threats to sleep. Said in simple terms, people with insomnia start to get stressed about not getting sleep. Its awful, I know because Im a bit prone to it myself. Sleeping tablets are generally designed to deal with brain chemicals but not with the adrenal stress chemicals which are responsible for the stressed state associated with insomnia. In my clinical practice Ive found that treating my patients during the day, as well as at night, is a much more reliable way to treat insomnia. This is often achieved with adaptogenic herbs that moderate the stress response. To learning more about the mechanics of insomnia watch this video, https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_kwartler_what_causes_insomnia And if youre dealing with insomnia, come in and get that sorted. Being sleep deprived is no way to live. Call 9431 0331 or book on line, https://remed-natural-medicine-clinic.cliniko.com/bookings

03.01.2022 DOES YOUR CHILD GET A SORE TUMMY AT SCHOOL? by ReMeds Bec The Naturopath Sore tummies are a quite common complaint at schools and there are a number of reasons... as to why your child may feel like they have some digestive discomfort. This can be down to being unwell (ie. having gastro or another stomach bug) but sometimes can be due to completely different reasons. So when is a sore tummy not just a sore tummy??? The gut and brain are very connected (a great example of this is when you feel butterflies in your tummy), so much so that the gut is being referred to as the second brain. If your child is feeling a bit anxious or worried, they may describe it as though their tummies are upset. For some, certain foods will not agree with them and can cause some tummy discomfort. This can be due to a food intolerance or sensitivity (which is very different from an allergy!) To try and find out which food may be causing some issues, keeping a diet diary may be useful. Constipation can cause quite a bit of discomfort and may contribute to sore tummies so making sure your child is regularly going to the toilet to have a bowel motion is important. Children can sometimes hold it as they may feel uncomfortable going at school or they are not given enough time during breaks. These can be a multi factorial issue and understanding what might be behind these symptoms is important. Speaking to the teacher or a health professional if you are concerned is a good place to start.

03.01.2022 Today is World Cancer Day and this is a glimpse of our story. Those of you who know me well are aware my son Fraser was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 7. Ive always been a firm believer in the gratitude attitude through life (difficult, I admit when life throws curve balls like cancer diagnoses!) The first night we went into hospital with a Leukaemia diagnoses imminent, I had a feeling leukaemia was something you could recover from and believed with every cell of my ...being that Fraser would recover. As his medical treatment progressed my naturopathic mind kicked in and I was able to support him through the chemo with good food and naturopathic support. He coped with the treatment without complications or lasting side effects. Its been over a year now since he finished treatment and Fraser has started high school this year a healthy, happy 12-year-old. For me Im grateful for the Leukaemia journey because I now feel incredibly fortunate to be able to help others who are going through the same experience. See more

02.01.2022 YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM - THE NATURAL DEFENCE While certain sub-groups of the population are more at risk for more serious consequences - the very young and ver...y old, those with compromised immune systems etc - for the rest of us supporting our immune systems is the best strategy. How do you do that? Adequate sleep, good hydration and managing stress, eating a nutrient dense diet full of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, mushrooms and protein for zinc, vitamin c, anti-oxidants, essential fatty acids and healthy fats.

02.01.2022 [Panic Attacks] by ReMeds Jessica Trethowan - Naturopath 25% of Australians experience a panic attack at some point in their lives. The most common physical s...ymptoms to look out for include breathlessness, chest pains, numbness/ tingling, dizziness, pounding heart, sweating, shaking or nausea. The difficult part about experiencing panic attack is that it can be very difficult to fully understand what your body is going through. Typically, sufferers will also experience a disconnect from their surroundings and feel as if they are losing control, going crazy or even feeling like they are dying. After an attack, many sufferers live in fear of another attack happening which can significantly impact on quality of life, work and relationships. Management of panic attacks doesnt just happen on the day you have one or the day after, its all the days leading up to that day. Your diet and lifestyle play will increase and decrease how susceptible you are to another attack. DIET. The impact of diet and lifestyle on mood is huge. A great place to start is by making sure you have three meals a day with adequate protein to balance blood sugar throughout the day. Hangry is a real thing so if you live on sugar and coffee, foods that spike blood sugar and stimulate the body, this will be contributing to how susceptible you are to a panic attack. NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES. I always look for nutritional deficiencies including Magnesium, protein, B vitamins, omega 3s, zinc, folate. Looking at the body and the symptoms it has can be clues to whether you have these deficiencies. Magnesium is a big one as our body uses more of it when we are in an anxious or stressed state, so we often burn through it very quickly. Low magnesium contributes to muscle tightness or cramping, fatigue, sleep disruption and more anxiety. Its a vicious cycle. SLEEP. And dont forget sleep. We are more prone to a panic attacks when we are run down and tired so if you have issues getting enough sleep, go to bed too late or are always tired then investigate why that is. I use herbal medicine a lot for sleep. Often sleep and anxiety come hand in hand so addressing one will often help the other. These three tips are just the basics and there is a lot more you can do on top of this to really take back control from panic attacks. Implement these changes as best you can on your own and see the difference it makes. Panic attacks can feel really lonely and scary so if after this you need extra support get in touch. See more
