25.01.2022 "Chronic pain often goes hand-in-hand with depression," says Dr. Marske. "Mindfulness-based meditation and yoga can help restore both a patient's mental and physical health and can be effective alone or in combination with other treatments such as therapy and medication." https://www.yogauonline.com//new-study-adds-growing-eviden And thanks Yoga U Online for matching this article to a photo that means I can happily share it, instead of the bendy, inaccessible-looking photos that often accompany articles from other sources and turn people off Yoga!

24.01.2022 During this challenging and unpredictable year I’ve put a lot of time & love into creating something I hope will be useful, called Calm & Courage. This is a little video about it. I’d be really grateful if you could share it around. Calm and Courage is an online toolkit of nurturing, life-affirming and adaptable practices inspired by nature and trauma-sensitive Yoga. Calm & Courage is not a course, it’s a sanctuary. You can choose what you need at any time from 10 min, 20 mi...n or 40 min practices in 5 themed chapters: * calm groundedness * centred strength * fluidity and ability to adapt to change * sense of spacious calm * open-heartedness All practices can be downloaded and kept. We use breath awareness, and inspiration from nature to replenish and to restore calm and courage. You don't need a visual imagination, or access to any special yoga equipment. If you can breathe, you can benefit from these nourishing practices. All moving meditations are slow-paced and within an easy, everyday range of movement. Most are 40 minutes long, and there's also a 20 minute moving meditation ideal for mornings or busy times. The guided still meditations are around 10 minutes long and designed for both beginning and experienced meditators. There’s also a 25 minute Guided Relaxation to give you a deep rest. I am available within the Calm & Courage platform to answer questions and help you with any challenges you might encounter, and you're welcome to reach out at any time. Once enrolled, you remain enrolled for the life of the resource and will be included in any ongoing updates. The full set of resources is $120, and the moment-free version is $45. Pay-it-forward places are available thanks to the generosity of our community. View Calm & Courage at https://alison-eastland.thinkific.com A meditation only, movement-free version of Calm & Courage is also available on the site.

23.01.2022 Hello Yogis, I thought you might enjoy this beautiful perspective on connection, belonging and impermanence. One of the many, multilayered meanings of the word Yoga is union. I’m so grateful for hearing from many of you over the last week, that you’re enjoying our online Yoga, and so grateful for your wonderful suggestions & questions that I can respond to with the video recordings, tailoring the courses around what you need most. I’ve been reminded that although we’re... not together in person, when we share this practice it connects us in profound ways. Thank you for continuing with me on this journey xo https://www.ted.com//oliver_jeffers_an_ode_to_liv/up-next

23.01.2022 This is what setting up for my evening classes looks Iike now. Yoga Australia recommends 1.5m between mats, not just between people. This makes sense, because of the way we reach out during the practice. I measured out the distance with a tape measure to keep everyone safe, and marked the spot for each mat with a calendula flower to make us all smile. If you're a local Yogi and you didn't hear about this round of sessions, it's not because I don't love you! It's because I can... only fit 9 people in the room, and to choose I had to make a list in order of who's been coming to Yoga consistently for the most years, and start the invitations from the top. I'll be spending the next 6 months building up the online side of my teaching, so only 2 classes a week, and then I'll take stock of things again after that. Until then, you're welcome to message me to join the waiting list or you can still join my 10 week Gentle Beginners course at https://alison-eastland.thinkific.com See more

22.01.2022 Thank you so much to all 778 of you who have followed this page as Huon Valley Yoga. I hope you'll stay with me through some changes. Since having to close my classes due to Covid 19, I’ve been taking this pause in my local business as an opportunity to start serving an extended community both in the Huon Valley and also interstate & overseas. I’m keen to continue with that, so I’ll be rebranding and no longer be teaching under the name Huon Valley Yoga. ... I’ll still be staying here, and I’ll still be teaching. I’m not quitting, just reinventing! I’m very grateful to all of you who have supported Huon Valley Yoga over the years. With COVID 19 restrictions easing, I hope to start up a couple of classes for loyal long-term local Yogis around late July. However our venues are still navigating their procedures around having outside groups. And social distancing is likely to be in place for some time, with 4 square metres required for each person. I’m not sure yet how to select only a small group of Yogis out of everyone who may want to attend, or how to make this financially viable for my livelihood without substantially raising your fees... Maybe we’ll have shorter in-person courses to keep it affordable for you, or some share-with-a-buddy options. Please keep an eye out for an email from me at the end of June, when I hope to have figured out a way forward with this. Meanwhile, if you'd like to get in touch or have any questions about your practice, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. I love to hear from you. With love, Alison Ps, If you haven’t already joined me online at https://alison-eastland.thinkific.com, it’s not too late because the practices are recorded and fully downloadable to keep. The term is very reasonably priced at $80 for 10 weeks of sessions plus some extras. Lots of our Yogis have been saying how beneficial it is to have practices you can keep and repeat, really getting to know the practices in a deeper way than ever before.

21.01.2022 I highly recommend Melissa's pregnancy Yoga classes! And to be able to benefit from her expertise in a small group is a very good opportunity. Contact Melissa via the post below if you're interested and please share if you know anyone who might benefit.

18.01.2022 When you hear or see all the recommendations to do online Yoga for mental well-being during this pandemic, don’t forget that local is beautiful. Before you head off to YouTube (where anyone without any training can post any kind of craziness), or a big overseas-based app, check out the great teachers we have right here in the Huon Valley that have been working really hard to get their services online since their live classes had to be cancelled... My friend Claire from Police... Point (Yogi Claire) currently has 2 live online sessions a week you can join: https://www.claireheywood.net/ Lovely Lyn in Cygnet (https://www.facebook.com/Yoga-with-Lyn-808649025824764) is teaching sometimes via Zoom, sometimes via FB live. A hop over the hills in Kingston, the amazing Dani Santosha Yoga Australia is online with Zoom and offering some lovely things via Facebook too. I'm hoping my friend Melissa in Franklin, who I always refer pregnant Yogis to, will be able to offer something online soon too (Panvada Yoga). We teach different methods and each have different strengths, but what we have in common is that we love and know our local community well, and we love to provide a relevant, accessible service that is useful for the well-being of the people around us. We’ve trained, practised and worked hard to do so. We each have our own way of doing our best to extend our services to locals who can’t afford to pay, like Dani’s FaceBook live offerings, or Claire’s pay-as-you-can plan. I have free places on my online course that have been donated by local Yogis who still have income. So if you want to de-stress or move and breathe easy, please reach out to a local, we love to serve our community. And you’ll help us still be here to serve when all this is over. See more

18.01.2022 My Gentle Yoga for Beginners course online starts on Monday!Course fees are $80, but the lovely thing is, I also have Pay-It-Forward places donated by our local Huon Valley Yoga community for anyone who wants to enjoy this course but can't afford the fees right now. I believe that at a time like this, Yoga should be easily accessible and nurturing, not about getting into complicated shapes, doing a glamorous handstand or placing more demand on our systems that are already un...der extra stress. There are plenty of very active online practices requiring lots of flexibility out there online, but my passion is sharing easeful & gentle Yoga...Yoga that's easy but also very effective & practical in helping real people to breathe better, and feel better both mentally and physically. I'm recording the videos for the course in my own home, on my old MacBook, and often with Bonnie the Yoga Labrador snoring! So the production values are not high gloss! What I can promise you though is lots of heart & love & experienced guidance. Downloadable practice videos will offer sequences for healthy mobility & strength, and also a guided relaxation in each practice, for calm & resilience. The practice videos can be downloaded to keep and use again & again. There will also be opportunities to ask questions, get guidance and chat about the practices using the course discussion board. If you’re interested, send me a message or you can go straight to the course site here: https://alison-eastland.thinkific.com//gentle-yoga-for-beg See more

17.01.2022 Hasn’t it been a stunning winter solstice day in the Valley? From this shortest, darkest day of the year and longest night, the light begins to grow a little every day. For me this mid-winter has been a time of challenging and enforced change, and yet also a time of opportunity, a chance to stop, stand back, and reassess. While I’m still busy with our last couple of weeks of term 2 online, I’ve also been keeping my head down a bit, taking some time to quietly reflect on how I... can make my working life more sustainable, and where I could go from here. There’s not much I can do about running classes while I wait for my venues to get their procedures for outside groups thought out, which is hard for them as conditions keep changing. We’re hoping for a late July return to classes, but I’m unlikely to go back completely to my old schedule. There will be a couple of courses for the long-time regulars, those of you who have been with me through fire, flood and just about everything else! The rest of my work will now be online courses (which I have some great ideas for!) and private sessions via zoom. Anyone else finding this a time of resetting and realigning? Happy Winter Solstice! 14.01.2022 Good Morning Huon Valley Yogis, we are busy recording your Week 10 sessions. Bonnie will be recording the guided relaxations this week. She'll lead us through some loud snoring, leading into a visualization of chasing seagulls on the beach. After this week you'll have two weeks to download and save your practices so that you can keep them and enjoy them as many times as you like. Then Huon Valley Yoga will simplify down to just 2 online courses for term 2, at half-price fees. The great thing about that is, you get to keep all your sessions as videos and you can do them from wherever, whenever, forever! If you have friends interstate or overseas that would love some calming, grounding Yoga for real bodies, please share the news of the online course for beginners starting April 27th. Thanks and wishing you a peaceful week xo

13.01.2022 Just one place left in the extra session.

13.01.2022 My new course, Gentle Yoga for Beginners online is now available for expressions of interest! Launching April 27th, this course will be 10 weeks of easy-going, slow-paced Yoga for real bodies and stressed minds! Downloadable practice videos will offer you sequences for healthy mobility & strength, and deep relaxation, helping you to feel centred, calm and resilient. You'll be able to download the resources to use again and again. There will also be opportunities to ask questi...ons using the course discussion board. The course will be $80 for the 10 weeks. 12.01.2022 In these challenging times I’ve been blessed recently with several people refusing refunds for our cancelled classes, or paying extra for their online course, to help Huon Valley Yoga survive. I want to pay this generosity forward by turning it into free enrolments in my new Gentle Yoga for Beginners online course. Maybe you’ve lost income too because of COVID-19, or you could be a health worker, teacher, carer, supermarket worker in the front lines of all this, or a single... parent juggling too much. You might just be under a lot of stress, really needing some gentle Yoga but unable to pay for whatever reason right now. Please get in touch through my website huonvalleyyoga.com (email form is on the site) and I can organise Yoga online for you. You’ll make me happy and our lovely donating Yogis very happy too, that these Pay-It-Forward places are being used. Many organisations are recommending online Yoga for mental well-being while staying at home during the pandemic, including the United Nations (https://www.un.org/en/coronavirus/wellness), Australian Universities (https://news.flinders.edu.au//mental-health-advice-amid-c/ & https://mdhs.unimelb.edu.au//tips-for-maintaining-mental-h), and the Australian Academy of Science (https://www.science.org.au//isolation-and-anxiety-strategi) . I agree, but what worries me is that a lot of Yoga freely available on platforms like YouTube is not kind or safe for people who have spent years at a computer, or who have been focused for years on looking after families at the expense of their mobility & strength. Yoga should be easily accessible and nurturing, not about getting into complicated shapes or placing more demand on our systems that are already under extra stress. I've spent years developing easy & gentle Yoga that is also very effective & practical in helping you to breathe better, and feel better both mentally and physically. The Gentle Yoga for Beginners course will take you step-by-step through 10 weeks of calming and gently strengthening Yoga with mindfulness and guided relaxations included as an essential component. Please share and let people know that these donated places are available, and if anyone needs a free practice you can download and keep without enrolling in anything, I have one for you right here (click the video below): https://vimeo.com/401840821 With deep gratitude to this amazing Huon Valley Yoga community. Your support for each other and for me in times like this really inspires and sustains me. Alison xo See more

12.01.2022 I am so happy that Lyn is now running the Friday morning Cygnet sessions. Get in touch with her if you'd like to either attend in person, or via Zoom. Lyn is devoted to sharing Yoga with compassion and care. (Please get in touch with Lynn directly for more information, see post below).

08.01.2022 I promise I’m not being sponsored here or anything. But these merino leggings from Overland Clothing are gorgeous. They were even mailed lovingly and sustainably (& very promptly too). I’ve been stalking these leggings on Instagram for so long, waiting and willing my mass produced leggings to wear out so I could buy these Tasmanian locally made ones for work. Now I may never take them off, they are so comfy and beautiful. I wanted to record the videos for my new online cours...e in something distinctly Tasmanian. These are printed with an image of our Tasmanian leatherwood flowers. I deliberately got a leg length size that’s too big for me which is terrible for showing off Tessa’s beautiful art, but I can’t help it I just like my leggings a crunchy at the bottom. You can get short, medium or long length though which is so rare. Tessa at Overland Studio draws together a love of the Tasmanian wilds, a background in sustainability, understanding about good movement patterns, and a lifelong passion for making things by hand. She designs, screen prints, and finishes all the Overland pieces in her Hobart studio, working with local business The Sewing Room for some sewing production. In my opinion they’re incredibly reasonably priced for lovingly made, high quality and stunningly beautiful merino leggings. Bonnie approves of the recycled packaging too, she said it tasted great. . . . #overlandstudio #buytasmanianmade #madewithloveandskill #madeintasmania #ethicalclothingaustralia #comfiestleggingsever @ Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia See more

08.01.2022 This week’s social distancing mat place markers were feathers. Matching the class theme of spaciousness and freedom for the breath, using techniques and practices that nourish our respiratory systems, and give us a feeling of spaciousness mentally too. My intention in using surprise mat markers was to give everyone a smile, but I found out that it’s become an opportunity for practice during the week for our Yogis. The feathers, shells, and flowers are placed on desks, dashb...oards and bedside tables as reminders to breathe and centre. That made ME smile :-) I’m wondering, with our waiting lists for classes longer than the class lists, should I try providing Zoom access to the classes? I would not be able to monitor the Zoom access during class so it would probably be by donation only, with the understanding that if something goes wrong, we just try again the following week. It’s all an experiment in progress! . . . #yogaisnoncontact @yogaaustralia #yogainthehuonvalley #yogaintheageofsocialdistancing #naturalobjectsformindfulness #breathe See more

08.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who’s been getting in touch asking when our classes can start up again... It looks like gyms and fitness centres will be restarting at stage 2 of easing restrictions (15th June), and this MAY include Yoga. However with social distancing still in place and 4 square metres required for each person, I’m not sure how to select only 8 people for each class from all the Yogis who may want to attend and I don’t yet know how to make that financially viable for maki...ng a living without substantially raising your fees. It will also depend on the venues I hire and when they are happy to open up for classes. Considering one is an aged care facility, and another is a health centre, it may still take a while. I’m committed to our online courses till the end of this term for everyone who’s paid for them, and I’m flat-out-busy investing a lot into them. Each online class takes around 5 hours of planning, setting up, recording, editing, and uploading (and that’s having streamlined it all a lot since my first attempts). I can’t run live classes this term at the same time as all that extra work and stay sane and healthy... and you need your Yoga teacher to be sane and healthy or she’s not going to be any good as a Yoga teacher! So we’re maybe looking at term 3 which starts July 22nd at the earliest, even without all the factors that are out of my control. There will be some changes - possibly a reduced timetable or a part-online, part-live model as I figure out how to recover my business and make it more resilient in the long term. It’s not too late to join in online if you want to, because the practices are recorded and fully downloadable to keep. You can start from the beginning at any time. Lots of our Yogis have been saying how beneficial it is to have practices you can keep and repeat, really getting to know the practices in a deeper way than ever before. All my energy is currently going into putting extras into the online courses in response to feedback, like shorter practices and new guided relaxations, and into supporting the currently enrolled online Yogis. There are also some limited spaces available for private sessions via Zoom. Keep following this page and keep an eye out for emails from me. As soon as I see a sustainable way forward for in-person teaching I’ll let you know. In the meantime, stay in touch as I love to hear from you, or even better, if you can, hop over and join me online at https://alison-eastland.thinkific.com With love, Alison (The photo of recommended mat spacings below is thanks to Yoga Australia who have been incredibly helpful to us members through all this).

06.01.2022 This is Macau who demonstrated some real old-school, highly advanced Yoga on Wednesday night for his human practising along to our online session. Definitely don't try this one at home!

05.01.2022 Wishing you all a peaceful Easter Sunday! If you’d like to do something nurturing for yourself, I have a free 75 minute Gentle Yoga for Beginners video you can try. It’s a sequence designed to soothe your nervous system and leave you feeling grounded, calm and resilient, with a guided relaxation at the end. It’s home-produced on my old MacBook and it’s taken me a bit of mustering of courage to get my mug in front of a camera and put it out in public, but it’s something useful, I hope, for these unsettling times. https://vimeo.com/401840821 (or just search for Alison Eastland on Vimeo). #BeKindHuonValley #StaySafeHuonValley

03.01.2022 A few people missed out on our Wednesday night Rest & Replenish guided relaxation, so I'm now holding an extra session on Tuesday night. Invest a little bit of time in your well-being, for a big difference in how peaceful and rested you can feel at the end of this unpredictable year we've had. This is a guided relaxation that anyone can do to soothe your nervous system, provide a deep rest, and replenish your energy levels. Anyone is welcome to come along and join us; no exp...erience necessary. If you'd like, you can make a donation that will be passed on to Australia for UNHCR. Bookings are essential (and limited) due to social distancing requirements. Head to the event tab to book or message me. 03.01.2022 Well, 2020 was a bit unusual wasn’t it? How are you all holding up here at the end of it? As Bonnie & I start our little break from recording and teaching and spend more time on the mat in the sun, I just wanted to say some thank yous. I wouldn’t have made it without your support. If you’d told me at the beginning of the year that I was going to be shutting down most of my classes I would not have believed you. I think social distancing recommendations for Yoga are likely to ...be around for a while, so I won’t be returning to teaching classes every evening. However there will still be two evening classes a week, with limited places, and later in 2021 I’m hoping to put on some day retreats and workshops for small groups. I now have a sign-up page for news of future local offerings on my new website if you’d like to get on the mailing list: https://alisoneastland.com/home/huonvalleyyogaandmeditation I’m thankful that 2020 forced me to get in front of a camera to do videos - something I’d resisted for ages. And I’m grateful I’ve been able to offer my practices in all sorts of far-flung places, thanks to technology, serving Yogis in lockdown from Melbourne to Spain and practising directly with lovely people from Adelaide to Dubai via Zoom. These are amazing times we live in. Most of all, I’m grateful for all of you who have supported me as I unexpectedly pivoted my business in a new direction to maintain my livelihood. So grateful to all of you who invested in my new online programs, who willingly and enthusiastically practised with me on a screen when I couldn’t offer you in-person teaching. To all of you who have supported and encouraged me to keep going, by sharing my posts (never underestimate the value of that to a sole trader!) or by keeping in touch. And some of you kept me sane by making me laugh. You know who you are! I hope you all get to connect with your loved ones this Christmas, even if it’s only over FaceTime, and that you also get opportunities for rest and relaxation. Speaking of rest and relaxation, here’s some links to my free guided relaxations and meditations for you. Keep these links handy for any time you feel tired, stressed, overwhelmed, or just want to enjoy some deep rest and peace: https://soundcloud.com/alison-eastland https://vimeo.com/user48822736 Lots of love from me and Bonnie xo
