25.01.2022 Yup. Im voting it worst tourism ad of all time. Agreed?

25.01.2022 My article about a more sustainable and planet-friendly Christmas was such fun to research and write.

25.01.2022 I love a library. The SLV was magnificent before this renovation, and now it looks even more beautiful and right for the times. Cant wait to pay a visit.

24.01.2022 I went to the Springwood event and found it both inspiring and practical. If youre a Blue Mountains business go along - its worth it (and its free).

23.01.2022 Why people deny climate change science, a bookshop, free wine and nibbles. I think you should go along!

23.01.2022 This is a really useful 20 minutes on how to use LinkedIn. The important things to think about: What do you want to be known for? Who are you trying to influence?

22.01.2022 I cant hide it any longer...

21.01.2022 "We want our speech and writing to be as clear to the person to whom we are communicating a message as it can possibly be.' It's what we editors do.

20.01.2022 Brook McCarthy of Hustle and Heart presented at the Rachels List Masterclass I went to on Saturday. It was great to have a marketing professional acknowledge that self-promotion and marketing can be excruciating (and tell us to get over it!), and that we should repel the wrong clients. This is just one blog post, there are lots of helpful pieces on the site - as well as face-to-face training sessions coming up in Sydney and Melbourne.

19.01.2022 Danish is a talented, dedicated events photographer who takes the most beautiful shots of birds too. He deserves big success in Australia too.

19.01.2022 What a year! What a book! Coming December 2020. Meanwhile, you can find the growing collection of Fire, Flood and Plague essays on Guardian Australias website, with new additions every few days. Link in the article.

18.01.2022 My piece for Recycling Week.

18.01.2022 These great photos are by our house guest, Danish Ravi https://www.instagram.com/danishraviimages. Its on in Surry Hills 22-24 November.

17.01.2022 An extraordinary story, and great writing. I wish Id done it.

17.01.2022 My first piece for The Ethics Centre (Apologies if the sweary title offends - the rest is very clean ) https://ethics.org.au/what-i-now-know-about-the-ethics-of-/

16.01.2022 The Paralympics were due to start next Tuesday and run until 5 September. Now theyre postponed until 2021. Last year I interviewed Ella Jones, who was due compete next week. I cant imagine what its like to have your big, big dreams put on hold, to have years of hard training in suspended animation.

15.01.2022 For all us work from home types - how to be less wasteful about it.

15.01.2022 Oh boy, did I need to read this today: Self-doubt doesnt mean you dont know what youre doing. It simply means youre human. The more you know on your particular subject of expertise, the more aware you are of your shortfalls. Thank you so much Brook McCarthy.

15.01.2022 So this is what I do.

14.01.2022 Fiction and nonfiction writers take a look at this great opportunity.

14.01.2022 Memorising poetry, then, is also a kind of long-term investment. To take a poem with us so we can truly know it, we must know it by heart." Im so glad we had to learn poems by heart at school. I often watch my cat and remember Arthur Seymour John Tessimonds lines: Cats no less liquid than their shadows ... Offer no angles to the wind. They slip, diminished, neat through loopholes Less than themselves; ... I couldnt know that without the rigours of memorising it all those years ago.

14.01.2022 Very helpful. We should all do this...

14.01.2022 My piece about environmentally responsible clothing company Upparel, for Clean Up Australia.

13.01.2022 Carolyn and Loretta self-published their novel, and did an amazing job with some help from Writing NSW. If youre thinking of self-publishing take a look at how they did it (and note the lovely, very professional cover design).

10.01.2022 Its not well understood just how much judgement and sensitivity is involved in editing. Language is always changing and each writers style is unique, so its rarely a matter of following rules. Thats why the editor that is right for one author might not be right for you.

08.01.2022 This is a truly wonderful and revealing (to me) exhibition. Hop to it soon as it ends on 22 March.

08.01.2022 Journalism and content writing are a bit different, but good, clear writing is the most important element of both. The only disagreement I have with the author is that copyediting software will save you from errors. I've saved clients from 'pubic interest', 'moths' imprisonment' and can't forget the recipe that called for 'ground black people' leading to an entire print run being pulped. Editors add value that you can't always see. But then, I would say that, wouldn't I?

08.01.2022 How good are your language skills? Do the NY Times copy editing quiz and see how you shape up. There are 17 up already. (Bear in mind this is US style so a bit different to how we do it here.) If you need help with copy editing, contact me. https://www.nytimes.com///insider/copy-edit-this-quiz.html

06.01.2022 My piece for Clean Up Australia about Budget measures to help the recycling industry.

05.01.2022 This is such a good blog post from a marketing POV (and a great company to boot!)

04.01.2022 Keeping messages simple at all times - not only in emergencies - is important. Readers need never guess at your meaning if you use clear, straightforward language.

04.01.2022 Out of this world.

04.01.2022 "When online learning is well-designed, conducted in a learning management system and is in the hands of skilled teachers, it offers a comparable learning experience to face-to-face."

03.01.2022 I was moved by Bob Hawkes memorial service, which I attended more or less by accident. http://alisonhillwriter.com.au/blog/bob-hawke-memorial

03.01.2022 Wow. This is inspiring stuff!

03.01.2022 Reviewing books has to be one of my favourite things. This one is for Clean Up Australia. https://www.cleanup.org.au/how-giving-books-to-children-thi

02.01.2022 Halloween is less than three weeks away. I wrote this blog post for Clean Up Australia to help make it less scary for our planet. https://www.cleanup.org.au/waste-free-hallowgreen

01.01.2022 So happy to see Omar Musas Here Come the Dogs on this list of gems. Read it if you havent yet, then check out the resources.

01.01.2022 I hope their book club has as much fun and good food and wine and honesty and warmth as mine. Id recommend they read To Kill a Mockingbird. Just because everybody should. What would you put on their reading list?

01.01.2022 Im sad (but glad) to hear that the NSW State Library has closed its doors. Its one of my favourite places in Sydney and provides such special resources to everybody who needs them, with a great shop and a nice cafe attached. But wait, word nerds - you can help! You can proofread the scanned newspapers in the Trove online collection, and you can transcribe super-interesting oral history. So if business is slow or youre getting bored, hop to it!... https://transcripts.sl.nsw.gov.au/home See more

01.01.2022 This flies in the face of evidence that many of us still want print. ,A letter that ran in The Saturday Paper said the signatories protested for not only for writers and their wages, but for the associated industries of designers, printers, bookstores and IT professionals, historians, scientists, workers in politics and academics. Also editors and proofreaders.
