23.01.2022 Lots of great colour in the gardens of the Homestead this year

19.01.2022 With the warmer weather on the way it's time for a bit of reminiscing about the lovely area we live in . Some photos and info from the past when there were lots of ferry boats touring the lake. Courtesy of A Pictorial History of the Wyong Shire by Edward Stinson.

19.01.2022 A Big THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers, Barry and Dirk, for the fantastic work they’ve been doing to keep the gardens and grounds of the Museum looking their best over the past few months. Now we’re open again, it’s so nice to have the place looking great. We had a visit from a large group of cockatoos this week even though we can’t have large groups yet nobody told them and they’re obviously enjoying the grounds too.

19.01.2022 As part of this year's Yarramalong Spring Festival we are now displaying the 9x5 Art Competition entries at Alison Homestead Museum until the end of September. This unique form of art has a long history in Australia dating back to 1889. The 3 paintings shown here are this year's prize winners. All paintings are available for purchase. The display will be open Sundays - Thursdays 10am-2pm. With the restrictions due to covid we request that anyone planning to visit please contact us to make a booking so that we can ensure everyone's safety. You can message us through facebook, send an email to [email protected] or call us Sundays-Thursdays 10am-2pm to make a booking. We have also entered the Scarecrow Competition again this year with our Gone Fishin' family.

18.01.2022 We had a great day on Friday with the official unveiling of our new Aboriginal Mural. The mural was painted by local Aboriginal Artist, Jodie Freeman, in consultation with the Darkinjung Land Council, to celebrate the importance of the area to the Darkinjung people. We were joined by Jodie, Barry Duncan from the Land Council, David Harris MP and Mark & Tia from Bendigo Bank. A big thank you to them all for their assistance in making this wonderful project happen. And thanks to Stephen Clarke OA, CC Town Crier, for his priceless contribution to the occasion.

17.01.2022 We enlisted the help of the Central Coast British Car Club last week to deliver a donation from the Homestead to the Batemans Bay CWA to help the community get back on its feet after the devastating bushfire season. The Car Club made a long weekend trip to support the Batemans Bay area and also give the CWA a donation of their own. 20-30 cars went on the weekend run and we thank them for offering to hand over ours as well.

17.01.2022 It's the end of another busy year at the Museum. We have been fortunate to acquire two historic forms of transport in the latter half of this year and they are both now on display in the grounds. The first is a horse-drawn tip wagon with a carrying capacity of around 2 tons and 5ft diameter wheels. The members of our onsite Men's Shed have brought this wagon back to life over the last few months. It is an impressive site in the garden. The other acquisition is one of the ori...ginal boats that were used as part of the first ferry service to take people from Wyong to The Entrance and back. Sometimes the trip was a nice sail and on other occasions, when the wind was not playing the game, it became necessary to row!!!! We invite you to visit us, wander through the Museum and have a look at our new displays.

15.01.2022 The Museum will be open Sunday to Thursday 10am-2pm during the school holidays. Our scarecrow family will be staying in place for the holidays- bring the kids to have a look at our Gone Fishin' Family. The gardens are full of colour at the moment. We also still have the 9x5 art exhibition on display until the end of September with over 100 paintings of a wide variety of subjects suitable for all ages. Bring a picnic or have one of our devonshire teas. Museum entry is $5 adults/$2 children. Devonshire teas are $5. If you would like to visit, we ask that you call us, during the opening hours listed above, on 4352 1886 to make a booking so that we can ensure everyone's safety.

15.01.2022 Are you looking for somewhere to catch up with family, friends or workmates to celebrate the end of this crazy year? Alison Homestead could be the ideal place - away from all the crowds at this time of the year - set in a tranquil country location, but close to town. You can bring your own food and have a picnic or a bbq or we can provide a variety of different menu choices. We have 2 areas available. An undercover area with drop down blinds to keep out the weather if neces...sary or an outside area with a marquee with or without side panels depending on preference. The marquee can be set up as extra space if necessary to become part of the undercover area. We have all the covid precautions in place to ensure your visit is a happy and safe one. If you'd like any more info you can email us on [email protected] or call 43521886 Mon-Thurs 10am-2pm. See more

13.01.2022 Some wonderful news. And a huge thank you to all our hard working garden volunteers!

13.01.2022 The Museum is still currently closed to visitors. The volunteers are in the process of getting everything ready and making sure we have all the necessary requirements in place to be able to responsibly open to ensure it is a safe place for everyone. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

12.01.2022 We have a new book for sale at the Museum or through our website - Community and Belonging, stories of the Central Coast compiled by Wyong Writers, a group living on the Central Coast. It contains short stories about life on the Coast from Woy Woy to San Remo, covering a diverse range of topics including Pink Ladies, surfing, holidays, a corner store, scarecrows, a shipwreck, a water garden and roses. Cost $12 at the Museum or $15 if you would like it posted.

11.01.2022 Such an array of colourful flowers in the garden at the moment. The day lillies are certainly having their time in the limelight now. It's a sight to see.

11.01.2022 The Gosford Wattle in the grounds of the Museum is putting on a good show. It's only about 5 years old and has grown into this magnificent tree from about 1m high when we planted it. Must be very happy there!

11.01.2022 A bit of time for reminiscing at the moment. This is what the Homestead looked like this time 5 years ago while undergoing the rebuild.

09.01.2022 Just patiently waiting to see you all back again.

07.01.2022 Alison Homestead from a different perspective.

06.01.2022 Huge thanks to the Wyong branch of the Bendigo Bank.

04.01.2022 Visit us soon we all hope. Thanks again Wyong’s Bendigo Bank for a great Video. Prez. Greg.

03.01.2022 A Big Thank You to Jake Cassar for his wonderful show today for our Senior's Event. Thanks also to everyone who attended. You were a great crowd!

01.01.2022 The gardens of the Homestead are a large part of the history of the property, as pointed out by Robyn in her comment on our last selection of pictures. The Pearce Family had a flower shop in Pitt St, Sydney and a plant nursery at Randwick and also operated a market garden at the Homestead until the early 1920s. After a couple of quick changes of ownership, Arthur and Gladys Pearce moved in and set up a plant nursery and flower farm. By this time Gladys was a successful floris...t with a second shop in Newcastle, which she continued to run throughout their years at the Homestead. A large coolroom was built in the grounds of the Homestead to pack and store bulbs and cut flowers. The hot house, which is still used by the volunteers for the propogation of plants for the grounds and for sale to visitors, was also built by the Pearce family (see attached picture). During WWII Arthur and Gladys grew vegetables on the property instead of flowers, to help contribute to the lack of supplies during that time. After the war the property reverted back to flowers and these were sent by rail to Sydney and Newcastle. The seedlings and other produce were sold locally. In the early 1970s the flower growing business ceased and in 1974 the Pearces sold the property to the Dept of Main Roads as part of the construction of the Sydney to Newcastle Freeway. However, due to pressure from the local High School (for which we are very grateful), the route of the freeway was changed and the Homestead was not demolished. The second picture was taken before the arson attack in 2011 and shows a large planting of jonquils in the field in front of the Homestead, which is a legacy of the Pearce family flower farm. The building on the far right of the picture is the 'Flower Shed' which contains the coolroom mentioned above. See more
