20.01.2022 It is with immense sadness that I'm letting everyone know that, when my lease ends in September, I will be closing my business. The sole reason for this decision is the horrendous impact the redevelopment of the Cato Street Carpark, now known as Prahran Square, has had on my business. In 2017, leading up to the closure of the carpark in January 2018, Stonnington Council told the small traders the redevelopment would be done in stages, with SOME parking being available at all ...times. They also said they'd make available the 40 spaces at the Prahran Town Hall (neither happened). They also told us, repeatedly, there'd be "2 small cafes, one a small coffee kiosk in Izett Street". In reality, the council built themselves FIVE food and beverage outlets that didn't become public knowledge until September 2018, 9 months after project commencement. I re-signed my lease for 3 years (BASED ON THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE CITY OF STONNINGTON) in Sept 2017, trusting what I was being told. That was just 3 months before redevelopment commenced. In June 2018 I liquidated so I could keep my business afloat, fully expecting the promised "parkland and event space" at the end of the 2 year construction. I had no reason to question what I was told, but that hasn't eventuated. Yes, I'm STILL so naive! Having put the blame fairly and squarely at the feet of the Council, I hasten to add FOUR councillors were left totally "out of the loop" in regard to the detail of the construction of Prahran Square. Lastly, I have received much appreciated moral support from Councillor Sally Davis (East Ward) and Cr Marcia Griffin (North Ward) and I'm not even in their Wards. In the council election later this year, please show them your support, along with Cr Judy Hindle (South Ward...that's my ward) and Cr Glen Atwell (East Ward) Sadly, I have no other option but to close my business. My business is my life and I'd wanted to work for at least another 10 years. But people aren't flocking back to the Square as we'd hoped and it's hopelessly not fit for purpose the way it is. If they'd given us the promised park, it would have naturally attracted people and also provided some much needed shady trees. But that wasn't to be. As the months go by I'll say more, in the meantime, thankyou SO MUCH everyone for your support over the years. See more
