24.01.2022 Kingborough Helping Hands Sharing Tree is up once again at the Channel Court Shopping Centre, Kingston. It was pleasure to drop by and thank Edna Pennicott, OAM, founder of KHH and Tasmanian Australia’s Local Hero for 2021 and Senator Catryna Bilyk, who is also patron and committee member KHH. The sharing tree is up now until 22 December - please drop by with a donation of gifts or vouchers that will go to children and families to make their Christmas that little bit more special.

23.01.2022 Labor’s Plan for Jobs will support disability enterprises like Bluegum Grounds Maintenance to create jobs and secure the future for hundreds of Tasmanian workers.

22.01.2022 Another successful year celebrated at the Brain Injury Association of Tasmania annual general meeting. We heard a presentation about an exciting project partner...ing with Disability Employment Services providers to overcome barriers to employment for people with brain injury. The project involves jobseekers making ‘disclosure videos’ in which they explain to prospective employers what sort of work they are interested in, how their injury affects them and what adjustments need to be made in the workplace. Both employers and jobseekers have spoken highly of the project, which has also helped to boost the self-confidence of jobseekers. Congratulations to Dario, Deborah and the team for the wonderful work they do for Tasmanians with acquired brain injury. Great to also see Alison Standen MP at the meeting who, like me, has advocated strongly for BIAT’s funding.

20.01.2022 This week I was delighted to catch up Toby Thorpe, Young Tasmanian of the Year and Edna Pennicott, Tasmanian Local Hero of the Year - to congratulate them personally on their achievements and thank them for their service to the community.

19.01.2022 Rental prices have increased on average by 37% statewide over the past 5 years. The Liberal Government has betrayed Tasmanians by failing to ease housing pressure. By failing to build enough social housing, regulate short stay accommodation, or ensure there are enough affordable rental properties. Labor’s Housing Works plan will build 490 affordable rental homes for Tasmanians and create 550 new construction jobs. ... https://taslabor.com/housing-works/

18.01.2022 What’s the antidote to a couple of full-on weeks in Parliament? A couple of hours doorknocking the community - talking about Labor’s Plan for Jobs. Thanks to our fabulous volunteers we had loads of conversations about rebuilding TAFE, investing in more affordable housing and so much more.

18.01.2022 Dan Andrews’ Victorian Government leading the nation in announcing a huge $5.3bn commitment to 12,000 social housing homes, creating about 10,000 jobs a year over 4 years. This is the sort of game-changing vision we need from the Morrison and Gutwein Liberal governments to reset the housing agenda and flatten the curve on homelessness.

18.01.2022 Thanks to Annette, Andrea and Diane for having the courage to stand up for improvements to their homes in Bellerive. Their units are about 40 years old and badly in need of investment. Everyone deserves a roof over their heads, with appropriate heating and energy efficiency to help with costs of living, and with a modern bathroom and kitchen that are suitable for tenants as they get older. Tasmanian Labor’s Plan for Jobs includes $17.5M for repairs and maintenance to create 150 jobs and improve social housing across Tasmania.

17.01.2022 The time has come over the coming days for the members of the House of Assembly to begin debate on the End of Life Choices Bill 2020. It was encouraging to hear the Premier announce this morning that Minister Sarah Courtney will take the Bill through the House as a private member.

17.01.2022 What a terribly sad story and poor reflection on our housing system which has failed to provide this woman with a safety net.

16.01.2022 It was a glorious day for a day trip to Bruny Island to attend the Bruny Island Community Association AGM today. Congratulations to the incoming committee including President Bill Hughes - and thanks to the outgoing committee for their hard work, dedication and community service. The room was packed (but COVID-safe) and there were reports on another busy - albeit unusual - year. ... A highlight was the recent launch of a new community bus. And it was great to hear directly about ongoing concerns including about the proposed ferry booking system and infrastructure to support tourists and shackies during the peak season.

14.01.2022 The total number of houses for low income Tasmanians has increased by just FIVE over the past year. That’s right the latest figures from the Liberals show that ...the number of houses has only increased from 12,504 in September 2019 to 12,509 in September 2020. There are more than 3600 Tasmanians on the waiting list for public housing. The housing crisis in Tasmania has never been this bad but according to Peter Gutwein there’s nothing to be concerned about when it comes to rent prices in Tasmania. The Liberal Government needs to do better. As a state we need to do better! Labor’s Housing Works policy will fast track building NEW affordable homes for Tasmanians and create new construction jobs in the process. http://taslabor.com/housing-works/

14.01.2022 At Unions Tasmania Women’s Conference with jam-packed program talking about current issues impacting women with an impressive line-up of guest speakers including Unions Tas Secretary Jess Munday, ACTU President Michele O’Neil and Tasmanian Australian of the Year Grace Tame. With Tasmanian Labor colleagues Sarah Lovell MLC and Ella Haddad MP.

12.01.2022 The State Budget is a missed opportunity. Peter Gutwein has simply re-announced a list of projects that his government has failed to launch in the past. This Budget, the most important since World War II, needed to have a comprehensive jobs plan to get Tasmanians working again.... But instead the Budget papers show unemployment is going to get much, much worse. Tasmanians are already desperate to work, but there just aren’t enough jobs for them. Right now for every job vacancy there are 27 Tasmanians looking for work. Sadly, Peter Gutwein’s Budget has no plan to get Tasmanians back to work and no vision for Tasmania. Next week Labor's response to the budget will include a fully costed jobs plan to get Tasmanians into work and help build a better and fairer state. Labor will put Tasmania first and make sure our jobs, our contracts and our profits stay here.

11.01.2022 Labor’s fully costed jobs plan, details what a Labor Government will do to strengthen our economy and create more jobs including rebuilding TAFE from the ground up. Find a copy of Labor’s Plan for Jobs here: http://taslabor.com//Labors-Plan-for-Jobs-Working-for-Tasm Tasmanian Labor

10.01.2022 After one of the most unusual and challenging seasons the Clarence Football Club has experienced both on and off the field, it was a wonderful night of celebrations at the Presentation Night last night with MC Blair Brownless. Congratulations to President Margaret Sutherland and the Board, CEO Richard Mulligan and all the coaches, officials, supporters and players.

10.01.2022 It was an honour to attend the Scouts Australia Tasmanian Branch AGM last night representing Tasmanian Labor. I was delighted to see Fiona Roberts, Tony and Jenna Lumley all receive medals - all of whom my family have known through our involvement in Howrah Scouts. Congratulations to all the award winners - such amazing service to the community and to supporting young people to be their best.

07.01.2022 If you’re looking for an affordable, interesting Christmas present that also supports the cultural heritage sector - look no further! Get in touch with the Lindisfarne Historical Society to get your calendar.

06.01.2022 Today the Upper House has passed the End of Life Choices Bill. This represents a significant step closer as a state for us to ensuring people can make their own choice about how they end their life, with dignity and in peace. Thanks and congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard on this reform over many years. It is a proud and historic achievement, and I believe that today we are well on our way to passing laws for a safe legal framework to access voluntary assisted dying.

05.01.2022 Over the last year the total number of houses for low income Tasmanians has increased by just FIVE over the past year. There are around 3500 Tasmanians on the waiting list for public housing. The Liberal Government needs to do better. As a state we need to do better! Labor’s Housing Works policy will fast track building NEW affordable homes for Tasmanians and create new construction jobs in the process.

04.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020 - Lest We Forget What a stunning day it was to join Mel Cooper, President of the Kingston Beach RSL Club and members, Dean Winter - Mayor of Kingborough and many representatives of local schools, community groups and residents.

03.01.2022 Peter Gutwein doesn’t think there’s anything to be concerned about when it comes to rent prices in Tasmania. But Tasmanians know that the housing crisis has been getting worse and worse for years. That’s why Labor has a plan to build more affordable rental houses for Tasmanians, put a roof over people’s heads and create jobs http://taslabor.com/housing-works

03.01.2022 Once again it was a night to remember at the Kingborough Lions United Football Club Senior Presentation dinner. President Brian Downes and the Committee pulled off a logistics marvel with teams and supporters in different areas across the venue, but maintaining the strong community spirit for which the club is known. With Labor colleagues Julie Collins MP, Senator Catryna Bilyk and David O'Byrne MP.

02.01.2022 I’ll be joining my colleague Bastian Seidel MLC in Dover this Thursday. Come and join us for a chat - about health, housing, jobs or anything else that’s on your mind!

01.01.2022 I can’t believe Christmas is just around the corner! Following an exciting launch yesterday, I’m doing my first rostered shift at the Kingborough Helping Hands Sharing Tree this hour - come and drop by to say hello!
