25.01.2022 This is good advice.

23.01.2022 When you have a "regular" child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditioned organisations and clubs. But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous effort...s, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike. This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognise their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people. Recognise that the "playing field" is not always a level surface. Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!! If you choose, please share in honor of all children who are deemed "different". Our world would be far less beautiful without them.

21.01.2022 Hope everyone is finding enjoyment in the new year

19.01.2022 These are the sort of innovations that we share with the kids to inspire them to create new solutions to global and local problems. Sadly creative and innovative thinking skills are often getting pushed aside with curriculum demands in schools, allowing very little time for children’s minds to wonder and projects to develop.

13.01.2022 "When daycare workers in Finland rolled out a lawn, planted forest undergrowth such as dwarf heather and blueberries, and allowed children to care for crops in planter boxes, the diversity of microbes in the guts and on the skin of young kids appeared healthier in a very short space of time."

13.01.2022 A lot of us who have been through the Australian school system (including university) still struggle with grammar. This blog is full of great ideas for ages 5-95 :) A great way to learn with your kids

06.01.2022 So cute! And such an important message

05.01.2022 I have to believe that most adults realise, at least on some level, that learning happens outside of the classroom (after all, that’s the way most of them have been learning since they left school). Yet they often behave as if they don’t. Every week without learning is causing a lifetime’s worth of harm! cry the politicians and pundits, eager to reopen an economy in the midst of a deadly pandemic, and parents nod along in concern. How can you just let kids not-learn fo...r so long, after all? Isn’t that irresponsible? Learning happens all the time, as any unschooler will tell you. Yet to many, it’s invisible. Their eyes slide over it. They can’t hear its rhythm in joyous laughter or in focused silence. Learning is supposed to occupy a specific place, to conform to a certain shape, and to follow all the correct rules (in the proper order). Learning, to them, means schooling. Anything else is a distraction. https://yes-i-can-write.blogspot.com//education-outside-fi

05.01.2022 Wow that is interesting. At Alithia the kids (of all ages) are surrounded by books and each child chooses when they want to start reading, there is no pressure, only inspiration. We can see each child chooses at a different age, and it’s always a time that is right for them. Some are 4 and some are 7.... down the track you can’t tell which one started first. ... The kids are very aware that although a group is the same age, some are learning to read words and others are learning to read social cues, both are important and they assist each other to learn these things.

02.01.2022 Take 90seconds to have your mind blown! The world is not always as you see it. If you have time to stick around for the quick explanation it’s worth it! Show the kids too

01.01.2022 New approaches to learning and development are having an amazing impact on children. We see it everyday and wanted to share... it IS possible to have an idyllic environment like this. ... http://alithialearning.org.au/whatfamiliesaresaying/
