25.01.2022 The best introduction to a research paper I have ever read "Science has been privileged in defining autism and consequent human difference, rather than the culture and society within which norms exist (Smukler, 2005). Nadeson (2005) questions the extent to which cultural representations of normalcy change over time and thus how a ‘true’ representation of autism can be obtained." Reference: Kanfiszer, L., Davies, F., & Collins, S. (2017). ‘I was just so different’: The experiences of women diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in adulthood in relation to gender and social relationships. Autism, 21(6), 661-669. doi:10.1177/1362361316687987

25.01.2022 A friend and I have started up a Facebook support group for local autistic adults or adults who self identify as being on the autism spectrum. It will be mediated by myself (as me, but also with all the resources of the alter ego that is the little black duck) and a group of autistic adults. We would like to create a safe space for adults to network, make plans to meet up, share resources and just generally feel that they are not alone in our little corner of the world. If you are in the Albury/Wodonga region (in Australia) and would like to join you can find us at "the duck pond", https://www.facebook.com/groups/alburyduckpond

25.01.2022 Another great paper exploring autism and our assumptions of autonomy Autism, autonomy, and authenticity Späth Elisabeth M A; Jongsma, Karin R.Medicine, Health Care, and Philosophy; Dordrecht Vol. 23, Iss. 1, (Mar 2020): 73-80. DOI:10.1007/s11019-019-09909-3

23.01.2022 Self reported strengths in autism

23.01.2022 Sensory integration is now considered evidence based practice for autism! How awesome is that! Edited to add: Document can be found here https://ncaep.fpg.unc.edu/research-resources Interesting note, mindful movement activities such as yoga and martial arts have also been added as evidence based practice

22.01.2022 That's interesting, even under the ndis' own guidelines in supporting people on the autism spectrum they recognise the need to provide support for senory processing difficulties. Page 64 of this guide https://www.google.com/url

19.01.2022 Some of the exciting resources that come in the training package for our Lego based therapy training package. It is so exciting getting it all together. Shout out to Cadams Creative and their talent and helping me pull it all together

16.01.2022 if anyone is interested in contributing to research on autistic quality of life... https://www.autismspectrum.org.au//priorities-of-autistic-)

16.01.2022 I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the ridiculousness of it all. "We found that nonautistic people formed more negative first impressions of autistic people, and this was influenced by gender of the person being evaluated. Autistic women were judged more favourably than autistic men; however, both autistic women and men were rated less positively than nonautistic people, with large differences between judgements of autistic females in comparison to nonautistic females." Cage, E., & Burton, H. (2019). Gender differences in the first impressions of autistic adults. Autism Research, 12(10), 1495-1504. doi:10.1002/aur.2191

15.01.2022 I'm doing my quantitative research subject assessment. I know it is going to be a tough slog when it opens with "You are a teacher coordinating grade 10 maths students..." My literal brain will start with "but I'm not.. I don't know the first thing a maths teacher will do" and THAT is what it will fixate on, not the rest of the assignment, which is all quite reasonable.

13.01.2022 I am so excited to announce that our very first "designed for online" training workshop is ready to go and taking bookings. We are limited to 30places, so book early!

13.01.2022 In a "Raising autistic teenage girls" webinar with Amaze today. This great little video about autistic females came up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwEH9Ui4HV8

11.01.2022 What would you like to know about autism? We used to do short "coffee and chat" presentations on autism-related topics of interest to our local community. I miss connecting and teaching/learning about autism in that intimate format. Maybe I just miss having a format where I can talk about my SI uninterrupted for 30mins lol.. ;). So I have decided to start running them as a Facebook live event (eek!!!). So tell me, what would you like to know about autism?

09.01.2022 Our LEGO-Based Therapy Facilitator Training is now taking bookings! The training is designed for Parents And Practitioners and runs across 4 weeks. It is 100% online. We are running 2 groups, one on a Monday and one on a Tuesday, each group is capped at 15 participants

08.01.2022 I just wanted to share a very small part of my Masters research project into autism and Quality of Life (QoL), which I find simply fascinating. This graph shows an analysis of all the literature on QoL in autism. It is a comparison of 2 assessment tools (the PedsQL and the WHOQOL-BREF, the most commonly used assessment tools in the literature) showing the difference between self-reports and proxy reports in adults and children. it is interesting to see that adult proxy reports are overestimating QoL every time and how both adult and child proxy reports underestimate the impact of physical activity and emotional support on well being.

04.01.2022 We are running our training Lego-Based Therapy Training for Parents and Practitioners again in late September. This session is run in the evening (AEST Time). If you would like to join us from outside Australia please check your time zone and register early so you can get your training pack in time.

04.01.2022 I want to talk about masking. But not in my usual research way. I want to talk about my experience Last year I went and got myself diagnosed and the process made me really question who I am. I have assumed my autistic neurology for years before I was officially welcomed into the club, but I have never really explored what that would actually mean to me, as a person. That was when I discovered her. Barbie. I have a mask. I call her Barbie. She comes out whenever I need to "pas...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Look at what we have been busy working on! We are just about ready to announce dates for our first session

01.01.2022 Very random question/activities for everyone to try out... 1. Close your eyes very tightly for a few minutes and kind of sink into it. Keep them closed and describe what you "see" (I do get that your eyes are closed and you don't technically see anything, but do you only see darkness or is there movement and the sense of colour? 2. Close your eyes and rub them as you would if you were tired. do you see anything when your eyes are being rubbed? Please remember to keep your eye...s closed and don't rub them whilst they are open. The image is a representation of what I see, although the colour and shape can shift. I Just found out that my husband doesn't see anything, it is just black. The thought kind of freaks me out
