10.01.2022 SEPTEMBER 3rd in 1993 the soon-to-be-besties Pearl Jam and Neil Young performed together for the first time when they rocked out on a version of Young's 'Rockin' In The Free World' at the MTV Music Video Awards. Pearl Jam were relative newcomers at the time - at the ceremony to receive the Video Of The Year award for their first major hit 'Jeremy', the third single lifted from their debut album 'Ten' (1991) - so were clearly delighted to jam on the classic song with their her...o who would soon earn himself the nickname 'The Godfather Of Grunge' for his influence on the Seattle-based movement, the pair uniting to transform the rebellious anthem into a seven-minute anarchistic freakout. From here the two beloved acts formed something of a mutual admiration society, regularly apperaing at each other's shows and covering each other's song, with Pearl Jam acting as Young's backing band on his 1995 album 'Mirror Ball' and Young returning the favour for Pearl Jam's two-song companion release 'Merkin Ball' that same year.
