07.01.2022 Lady Gowrie Tasmania Integrated Centre for Children & Families by Cumulus Studio, was an entrant in our 2018 Kevin Borland Masonry Award. The concrete block cor...e of the building’s entry space references the raw materiality and utilitarian scale of the mechanics’ workshop that previously occupied the site. Working in close collaboration with artist Judith Abell, the blockwork was carefully designed and detailed to integrate the architecture with Abell’s installation piece Mirror Mirror. The use of concrete block, stacked and turned on the diagonal, allows the mirror and linished stainless steel artwork to fragment the scale of the entry space providing a playful, educational and distracting experience for children (and adults) entering the childcare centre.
