24.01.2022 Episode 3 of Conversations: Interpreting and Translating Podcast is available to stream now and delves into, Why some patients of established languages refuse the service of interpreters. This weeks special guest, Despina Amanatidou (Healthcare Interpreter, AUSIT Vice President Events & PD), discusses why for established languages (such as Greek, Italian, Turkish, etc) clients with limited linguistic mastery are under the wrong impression that they dont require interpretin...g services as they can get by. A lot of the clinicians are under the same mistaken impression (as long as someone can tell them their name, nods, says Yes and Thank you) and this creates obstacles in the provision of language services. You will never know the difference between getting by and using the services of an appropriately qualified and competent professional interpreter, which is of course, up until you use such services as you should. Now and with the added complexity of a pandemic, there is a tendency for interlingual communication to be reduced to a bare minimum due to both necessity and convenience. However, this very misinformed attitude has far reaching ramifications to the complete, accurate and effective communication and is a concern for all stakeholders in the industry. 20.01.2022 One of the worlds hardest jobs is surely a doctor having to give a patient bad news. Its harder still when the patient speaks a different language. Now think about a doctor giving a complex set of instructions to that same non-English speaking patient relating to medication consumption or post-operative care. Its easy to see how language gaps can result in service gaps, with significant impact. A recent study by the University of Washington trialled language-specific audio... recorded discharge instructions to parents with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), whose children would be recovering from day surgery. The 83 parents enrolled in the study gave the audio recording an average rating of 9/10. More than 45% of participants played the recording more than five times, and 94% shared the recording with other family members. The results of this study are another great reminder of the positive impact we can have on linguistically diverse groups with insightful yet simple applications of translation services.
