24.01.2022 One of my dearest friend's Mum has asked me to help her realise a little dream she's had for many years. Mrs Mac is 90 years old and was widowed about 5 years ago. Her husband had always had his own shed in the back yard where he'd tinker away at things. Well! She's decided, it's now or never to convert that man cave into a she shed retreat! I'm not sure how it'll work out as it really is just a pre-fab metal garden shed, but I do know Mrs Mac and I will enjoy our time spent together, and the making of her own small space. I start the deconstruction tomorrow, to get it back to a blank canvas, and then who knows where it'll take us! Fingers crossed that it turns out as nice as the lovely woman for whom it's intended. Watch this space! :) Happy days indeed.

22.01.2022 Have you ever had this happen? Someone has been too vigorous with the door handle, maybe pulling at it when it's locked, and suddenly the handle has actually come off the door? This happened at our house recently, and fortunately it's very easy to fix. Follow the photos and descriptions.

21.01.2022 Hi there! Not sure anyone's out there, but thought I'd drop in to give a peek at what I'm up to in the kitchen. Essentially I'm converting my plain-doored, high gloss polyurethane kitchen into a Shaker style kitchen. With the upper cabinets, I removed the side cabinets, and the doors from the centre cabinet, and built the exhaust fan/range hood cover over it. I can still access the interior of the cabinet if needed, as the front panel is removable. (The holes in the walls we...re a consequence of novice-girl removing the splashback. #oops!). With the peninsular, I didn't like the modern look of the counter cantilevering, so built out the sides of the cabinet then trimmed them out. Looks much better I think - well, for me anyway! I've yet to paint it - obviously! These two things were very simple to construct and have really made the kitchen start to head in the right direction. I intend painting everything white, then bringing in colour using decor, fabric, etc, but am still considering whether I should, maybe, paint the lower cabinets a colour. Hmmm. We'll see, I guess.

19.01.2022 I recently started work on an unusual renovation - converting a man cave into a woman's retreat..... for a wonderful 90 year old friend of mine. Follow the journey and we'll see if I can make this lovely lady's wish come true. https://www.facebook.com/pg/All-Things-Paint-Beautiful-1690131064579483/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1983495501909703

19.01.2022 NOT A GARDENER? If you're not into gardening, you're not into gardening. I get that. But I have to say, the blooming of a new plant, or eating your first ripe tomato - which you've grown - can bring you so much joy! You have no idea. I've been fortunate enough to teach people who were seriously not into gardening, and see them become avid gardeners enjoying growing their own food, herbs and flowers. If you want to give it a go, but don't know where to start, try small - grow... some herbs. You'll start to use them pretty much immediately, and most are tough as old boots. The best book I can recommend is the Yates Gardening Guide. It has all the basics, in language anyone can understand. A blog and FB site to follow for great, sensible and practical information, is My Productive Backyard. Kathy will show you how to grow all sorts of stuff, as well as info. on chook keeping. https://www.facebook.com/MyProductiveBackyard/?fref=nf This morning I was pottering in my yard, and the joy of my roses' first Spring blooms, and the array of colours of the simplest plants was just wonderful! It just makes my heart happy! Here's some photos to inspire you. Most of these plants are pretty easy to grow, and many have just self-seeded and come up of their own accord.

16.01.2022 Have you ever looked at your old loo seat and thought it looked pretty tired? Or maybe it's developed a bit of an odour - you know that particular loo smell.... the one you really don't want in your house. Follow the photos and find out how easy it is to change the loo seat. It's one of those things which really makes you glad you did!

14.01.2022 Do you still use a clock radio beside your bed? Do you have trouble trying to make it work in with your decor? Here's an idea, using a cheap set of small drawers from IKEA. Follow the photos and the read the comments for the 'how to'.

12.01.2022 A little gem from the past, which sums up how I feel about my reno's to our home! https://www.youtube.com/watch

12.01.2022 THINKING OF PAINTING YOUR KITCHEN? This is an example of just what magic can be done with a coat of paint. This was in our previous home, which was built in the 1980s. It was an incredibly dark kitchen, all laminate over chipboard. The floor was black slate which compounded the problem. When we bought the house we said we'd try and replace the kitchen in 5 years. However!! I simply couldn't deal with the darkness any longer, and, so after 18 months I decided to paint it. For less than a few hundred dollars, and one week of my time, it became a completely different kitchen. I didn't use specialty laminate paint, as it hadn't been invented, but just used a bonding product called ESP, then oil-based enamel paint straight over the laminate and splashback. The pictures speak a thousand words.

08.01.2022 This isn't about paint or beautiful things, but just maybe it'll save you a bit of money. Check out my photo album, 'A QUICK LOO REPAIR WHICH WILL SAVE YOU MONEY'. Not glamorous, but think what you can do with the money you save! :)

06.01.2022 Hi Everyone, As part of my main bedroom renovation (it's a long, slow process!), I wanted a way to conceal my clock radio while retaining its functionality. I found the way!! Happy days! :D Follow the photos in the album for One Heck of a Hack Hack, otherwise known as A Clock Radio Cover.

06.01.2022 Cistern leak? Is it a slow drip from under the base of the cistern? This may be a very easy problem to solve for under $20.... Alternatively you may get the plumber in and be charged over $160. Have a go at fixing it yourself - it's an easy fix!

02.01.2022 2017. A dear lady I know, who is the ripe old age of 90, asked me to turn her late husband's man cave into a retreat for herself. She likes to sit down in the shed just to get away from the phone, and had long been wondering who she could get to create her back yard retreat. So... we had a chat and I was given the job, which delights me no end! I started the deconstruction about 6 weeks ago, but actually getting access to the shed is proving difficult. Mrs Mc has a much busie...r social life than I! This is the first time I've done a reno of this sort, (I've been renovating my house for 2 years, but never a tin shed!), and the first time I've done it for an actual client. Follow along with me as I navigate the waters with a woman who's embracing making all the decisions, and can do it all her own way. All power to her! The shed is just that; a very old Treco aluminium shed. It's interesting. Can't wait to see the end result. See more

01.01.2022 I've finished painting the peninsular in the kitchen, and am really happy with how it's turned out. I've also done all the kick boards, packing them out then cladding with new boards, and painting white. There were some tricky issues as the original build had an enormous amount of variants, which I never noticed until I had to deal with them. Next I'll start on all the cabinet doors and drawers. Fingers crossed it goes according to plan! Here's the end result of the peninsular...
