25.01.2022 Our pelvic floor muscles lay across the base of our pelvis like a big hammock. So, even though we can’t see them, when we exercise they are playing a vital role in supporting our internal organs. They really are the only thing between us and the outside world! We therefore need to understand how to work these muscles, just like any other muscle in the body, so that when we exercise we are protecting them, strengthening them, and not overwhelming them to the point where it is not uncommon to end up with leaking from bladder, bowls, or vaginal prolapse. If you are unsure of exactly how to work these muscles when exercising, it is so important for your long term pelvic health that you see a women’s health Physio! Then you’ll have the confidence to work with the muscles and ensure that there are no surprises later on!

24.01.2022 Women's Health Week 4th-8th September! Did you know that 1 in 5 women in Australia experience depression and 1 in 3 suffer anxiety at some time in their lives? Mindfulness is a scientifically proven way to calm our busy minds, centre our thoughts and help us manage the stress in our lives. Research has shown that mindfulness can actually change the structure of our brain. One study showed that after eight weeks of practising mindfulness for 27 minutes a day, it increased area...s of the brain involved in learning, memory, emotions and perspective. YES PLEASE I hear you say!! 23.01.2022 July 1st - 8th is Birth Trauma Awareness week I wish to acknowledge these amazingly brave women who have spoken out about their birth trauma experiences - be them physical, psychological or emotional. Thank you for sharing your stories as there are many women who are suffering and need to hear they are not alone, their feelings are valid and there are people who can help them in this journey. The Australasian Birth Trauma Association was established in 2016 to support women, ...their partners and their families. Please talk to someone and don't give up until you find the help you need. www.birthtrauma.org.au As both a midwife and a women's health physiotherapist (and mum of 3 not so easy births myself) I truly understand and feel privileged to be able to help women on their journey. #birthtrauma #postnataldepression #gckids #goldcoastbabies #goldcoastnewborns #gcbaby #goldcoastmumsandbubs #goldcoastmums #johnflynnmaternity #goldcoastmaternity #tweedmaternity #pindaramaternity #ourgoldcoast #midwife #menopause #constipation #pelvicfloor #incontinence #menshealth #womenshealth #pregnancy #postnatal #birth #breastfeeding #chronicpelvicpain #vaginismus #dyspareunia #prolapse See more

21.01.2022 Love Sydney ... 4 very informative days at the 26th National Conference on Incontinence run by the Continence Foundation of Australia. Latest research from overseas and Australia on treating urinary incontinence in women, men and children. Great workshop on using real-time ultrasound to help treat urinary leakage and erectile issues following prostate surgery - thanks Stuart Baptist! And loved Shan Morrison's presentation on chronic pelvic pain - we really can help so many me...n and women with this very distressing condition. #CFAConference17 #gckids #goldcoastbabies #goldcoastnewborns #gcbaby #goldcoastmumsandbubs #goldcoastmums #johnflynnmaternity #goldcoastmaternity #tweedmaternity #pindaramaternity #ourgoldcoast #midwife #menopause #constipation #pelvicfloor #incontinence #menshealth #womenshealth #pregnancy #postnatal #birth #breastfeeding #chronicpelvicpain #vaginismus #dyspareunia #prolapse See more

17.01.2022 Love Madge The Vag - one of the most notable changes over the last 25 years as a midwife and women's health physiotherapist is how women choose to trim their bush! It is your bush and you should choose what you feel comfortable with - all are normal. There is an argument for pubic hair preventing infection (just like hair in our noses) and providing a buffer for not over-sensitising our genital area so pubic hair is natural and ok, on the other hand, some women feel better wi...thin themselves not having any hair (and so do men these days) and that is ok also! #gckids #goldcoastbabies #goldcoastnewborns #gcbaby #goldcoastmumsandbubs #goldcoastmums #johnflynnmaternity #goldcoastmaternity #tweedmaternity #pindaramaternity #ourgoldcoast #midwife #menopause #constipation #pelvicfloor #incontinence #menshealth #womenshealth #pregnancy #postnatal #birth #breastfeeding #chronicpelvicpain #vaginismus #dyspareunia #prolapse See more

15.01.2022 Very interesting!! ....

14.01.2022 Women's Health Week 4th - 8th September! We understand both the physical and mental benefits of moving but sometimes it is hard to get started! Think incidental exercise ... what do you do in the normal course of your day that can be used as an exercise opportunity? Eg. park the car a block or two away from work so you have to walk; take the stairs instead of the lift; each time you go to stand up from your chair try sit/stand/sit 5 times; improve balance by standing on one ...leg when you clean your teeth in the morning and the other at night; squat and lift up and down the washing basket or groceries 5 times instead of just once! The list is endless really! For cardio health start with something achievable - don't set yourself up for failure! Eg. 10 minute exercise then build up. Remember if you just get out there then you are likely to want to stay longer but if you think of having to do 1 hour we often find an excuse! Guidelines are: moderate exercise 30-60min most, if not all, days of the week. Plus at least 2 days of muscle strengthening. As physiotherapists we are experts in assessing your physical issues and providing you with a specific exercise program that is safe and enjoyable. 12.01.2022 The final day of Women's Health Week 4th - 8th September 2017!! SLEEEEEEEP!! Yes Please!!! As adults we need between 7-9 hours per night. A few tips on how to get a better nights sleep: 1. Try to keep regular sleeping and waking times even on weekends. Start relaxing your mind an hour before you intend to sleep eg. read a book, have a bath, meditate. 2. If you are not asleep 20 min after turning your lights out then get back up and wait until you feel tired again. 3. Turn o...ff electronic devices at least 2 hours before bedtime - eg. remove phones, computers, TVs from bedrooms! Blue light from these devices blocks the sleep hormone melatonin thereby affecting our sleeping patterns. 11.01.2022 Drive through supermarket opening in Dubai 2019!! Really!!??? What about incidental exercise!! - We need more activity/exercise in our daily lives not less! As a physio, busy mum, working time-poor woman, I encourage patients to incorporate as much incidental exercise into their day as possible - squatting to lift and unload groceries / dishwasher; lifting washing basket / work bags / baby up and down 5 times instead of once; running up and down the stairs 3 times instead of ...once; 10 heel raises on an outside step whilst checking text messages; single leg squats whilst brushing teeth - how creative can you be??!! #gckids #goldcoastbabies #goldcoastnewborns #gcbaby #goldcoastmumsandbubs #goldcoastmums #johnflynnmaternity #goldcoastmaternity #tweedmaternity #pindaramaternity #ourgoldcoast #midwife #menopause #constipation #pelvicfloor #incontinence #menshealth #womenshealth #pregnancy #postnatal #birth #breastfeeding #chronicpelvicpain #vaginismus #dyspareunia #prolapse See more

08.01.2022 Women's Health Week 4th - 8th September! Bone Health ... did you know that by about age 30 our bones reach maximum density! Women are particularly prone to losing the strength in our bones following menopause. We are therefore 3 times more likely to suffer from osteoporosis than men! 3 things to remember for stronger bones - 1. Foods high in calcium e.g. dairy, oily fish, almonds 2. Sun exposure for 5-10 min mid-morning, most days, for Vitamin D ... 3. Weight-bearing exercise ie. high impact, resistance, against gravity e.g. skipping, weights, tennis, dancing, boxing, jogging As Women's Health Physiotherapists we specialise in assessing your body (strength, pelvic floor muscles, injury precautions etc) and designing a safe exercise program for you!
