23.01.2022 VOCAL HYGIENE AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR If you notice your child sometimes has a breathy, hoarse or raspy voice, this could mean that they have damage to their vocal folds. Damaged vocal folds can lead to long-term voice issues that may require therapy or surgery. Some behaviours that could result in damaged vocal folds include:... Coughing or frequent throat clearing Frequent yelling Making sound effects constantly Excessive talking Speaking loudly Excessive whispering To avoid this, here are a few helpful tips that could ensure your child maintains a healthy voice: Staying hydrated - Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration of the vocal folds. Remind your child to speak slower and use their ‘normal’ voice Remind your child to ‘breathe’ when speaking so that they have adequate breath support Reduce your child’s yelling by reminding them to use their ‘inside’ voice to avoid strain. Model a healthy voice for your child by speaking at a comfortable volume and avoiding things like speaking too loud, whispering or yelling If you notice that your child’s voice quality is showing any of the above signs, it is important to consult your GP or receive a referral for a Speech Language Pathologist so that your child receives the appropriate assessment and treatment.

19.01.2022 STUTTERING BEHAVIOURS AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR Stuttering refers to the disruption of speech through hesitation and/ or repetition of sounds, words or phrases. If you suspect your child has a stutter, here are some things to look for:... - They repeat certain sounds in words when speaking to others e.g. (p, p, please can I) - They repeat words multiple times in a sentence e.g. (please, please, please can I) - They take long pauses when speaking and appear to have difficulty getting their words out e.g. (p---lease can I go to the shops). - They extend certain sounds in word longer than necessary. WHEN TO REFER: If you suspect your child has a stutter then you may need to get a referral to see a speech pathologist so your child can get assessed. Stuttering can often impact on: - A child’s ability to be understood by others and this can affect how they progress in school. Other’s might find it difficult to follow what they are saying, feel uncomfortable or even interrupt them. - A child’s social and emotional development as they may feel self-conscious and may fear being made fun of by others. It is important that stuttering is assessed and diagnosed as early as possible so your child can receive the help they need. Receiving treatment for a stutter early on can reduce the long-term impacts and may allow your child to live a stutter free life.
