25.01.2022 Sarah Joseph has created a fantastic concept for kids who have a difficult time making good choices when emotionally charged. Meet the Animals in your Brain - the barking guard dog (amygdala), the ape (flight/fight/freeze response) and the wise owl (prefrontal cortex). Using these tools have helped us at AAA to explain how our brains work and strategies we can use to calm the guard dog, put the ape back to sleep and get the wise old owl to come back to his perch. ... - Donna

19.01.2022 Shared from The Neurodivergent Teacher: "Friendly reminder that the autistic way of being is entirely valid and exactly what it needs to be, including autistic play. Just because it looks different doesn't make it any less valuable, functional, educational, or "age appropriate" (whatever that means). What an autistic child (or person) enjoys doing in their play/free/down time that is not physically harming themselves or others is 100% not your place to control, dictate, judge, or change. Let children play in ways that make sense to them--not you." https://www.facebook.com/theneurodivergentteacher/

04.01.2022 Sharing this great post about mini schedules; a fantastic tool to support our students. They can be used for structured work activities or free time activities like playtime. Many students benefit from having the larger activities of their scheduled day (e.g., reading) broken down into smaller components. For some students, mini schedules help ease the anxiety they might feel about what is going to happen next so they can focus on what is happening now. For others, it helps them see the end of tunnel of doing what you want them to do instead of what they want to do. For some it helps them to navigate the larger activity independently. https://autismclassroomresources.com/visual-schedule-serie/
