23.01.2022 An Amazonian parrot called Freddy Krueger has made headlines in Brazil after managing to find its way back to the zoo from which it was stolen while recovering from a four-year nightmare that saw it shot in a gun battle, abducted by armed thieves and bitten by a snake.

23.01.2022 We love to keep our birds busy. They are very smart and need entertainment. To give them a little bit of a challenge we prepare special treats, which makes it a... little bit harder for the parrots to access their fruits and nuts. They enjoy their work, as you can see... Have a wonderful weekend!

23.01.2022 Australias five black cockatoos - How well do you know our black cockies? Australia's charismatic black cockatoos are true icons. Our five species the Baudin...s, Carnabys, red-tail, yellow-tail and glossy black hide away high in the gum trees, feeding on delicious gum-nuts, cawing loudly and distinctly. All black cockatoos fall into the genus Calyptorhynchus. While there are other black-coloured cockatoos, like the palm cockatoo, they arent consider to be black cockatoos. Black cockatoo expert Erika Roper from the University of Western Australia has been working with these birds for four years, but has had a lifetime affinity with them! Read more....

14.01.2022 Red Tailed Black Cockatoo

14.01.2022 Sometimes when I look at recordings of training sessions with my grey duo I'm reminded of how many things we worked hard on waaaay back in the past that I take ...for granted now because it just runs so smoothly. In this clip I'm working with Eris (who looks like a roughed up feather duster due to molting atm!) on a new (to her) fetching behavior. You'll see Echo chillin' close by with relaxed body language, not bothering her, trying to steal treats or grab my attention. This is one of many default behaviors that have been built in to our training sessions over time. I don't have to give him any additional cues to stay or station - he knows that when I'm paying attention to Eris, sitting calmly close by will lead to him getting attention and some yummy treats now and then. Dog trainers know how valuable this is in multiple dog households, and in zoos we use similar techniques a lot as well. If you're working with a group of animals where one individual will steal food from others, chase them away or even hurt them, teaching that individual that letting me focus on that other guy doesn't mean they get less - it actually results in them getting what they want - is key to working with multiple animals with less mess, stress and aggression. In fact, we can even use similar strategies when introducing new birds to eachother, or when working with parrots that appear to be guarding a favourite person. Instead of another bird or person being a threat or competitor, they become the gateway to good stuff! By starting out very small and consciously building the contingencies we want - we can get end results that seem (and feel!) so effortless, and really add value to our every day lives together.

13.01.2022 Our next speaker comes from India and is a reputable breeder and avian expert. Anil Garg's passion began at the age of six. Since its first breeding achievement..., his enthusiasm has grown and he now houses an extensive and varied collection of exotic parrots in its two large breeding facilities situated in Bangalore and Calcutta. Among his most personally treasured achievements are his regular successful breeding of the Hawk-headed Parrots and that of his beloved Palm Cockatoos. The Palms have proven to be his biggest challenge to date and success was only achieved after numerous failed attempts. Anil is also a founding member and secretary of the Avian Society of India (ASI). The ASI represents the first society of its kind in India and aims to not only share and spread knowledge, but also to bring breeders together under the umbrella of a national organisation that represents aviculture and aviculturists from the ground level up. Away from the birds, Anil runs several companies, across a number of fields, among them, software companies along with businesses in both the confectionary and fertilizer manufacturing industries. You will undoubtedly be fascinated by the interesting presentation of Indian aviculture by Anil Garg. See more

07.01.2022 As the Orange Bellied Parrot breeding season winds up, our final chicks have just left the nest box, bringing the total number of fledglings at Moonlit Sanctuar...y to just over 60 for the season! Our dedicated OBP team worked tirelessly to ensure that the breeding pairs had everything they needed to get this many offspring on the perch. Some of the fledglings have already been released to boost the wild population, while the others have been transferred to our large planted flight aviaries to socialise and fly together with the adults as a flock. www.moonlitsanctuary.com.au #moonlitsanctuary #moonlit #orangebelliedparrot #OBP #criticallyendangered #findyourwaymorningtonpeninsula

06.01.2022 Glossy black-cockatoos are one of the more threatened species of cockatoo in Australia. As the glossy black-cockatoo feeds mostly on casuarinas and nests in euc...alypts, retaining existing stands of casuarina/eucalyptus trees and extending this habitat where possible is one way to help these beautiful birds. So get into Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day this weekend! 05.01.2022 The world of aviculture has lost many of its great contributors in recent times and sadly the news has come in that Stan Sindel has passed away. Stans contribu...tion to the world of aviculture cannot be understated. He was a pioneer and like many from his era he put in a lot of the hard yards to establish a number of the husbandry techniques we use today. His failures allowed for our successes and his successes allowed for our hobby to flourish. His work with many species opened up the door for others to keep birds that they had not kept before. Stan who had kept birds since the age of eight was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2003 for his work on Australian Parrots. Stan who was not one for keeping secrets when it come to keeping and breeding birds lectured far and wide speaking around Australia and in the USA and NZ. Along with James Gill, Stan produced a number of outstanding books on Australian Lorikeets and Parrots (see attached photos) in the field and aviary that to this day take pride of place in the libraries of many around the world. Stan also partnered with the late Robert Lynn to produce one of his finest works which was a book on Australian Cockatoos in the field and aviary. Stan enjoyed not only keeping and breeding Lorikeets, Parrots and Cockatoos but also observing them in the field. These observations were often featured in his books and made at a time when travelling Australia was not cheap nor as easy as it is today. Stan had been unwell in recent years so it was no great surprise to hear of his passing but it doesnt make it any easier to hear. I have said it before and Ill say it again, that when someone passes away it is like losing a book from the library of life but with Stan it feels like weve not only lost a book but in fact we have lost an encyclopaedia. Heres to you Stan! We cannot thank you enough for your contribution! I hope that you are not just at peace but that you are also flying high with the birds you so adored. To Stans family and friends I wish to express my condolences for your loss. Stan has helped me become the aviculturalist I am today.
