25.01.2022 Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles . This one might seem like a cop out but... WALKING! One of the most underrated and accessible exercises ever. .... Walking is brilliant for maintaining aerobic health and greatly reducing risk of all-cause mortality. But how can walking help postural muscles that have been inactive in front of a desk all day? . Walking is a rhythmic exercise that utilises your entire posterior chain - your calves, glutes, and back extensors are all working to keep you upright and moving forward! Not to mention getting some movement back through your hips, and through your thoracic spine and diaphragm as breathing rate increases. . Walking outside in natural or plant-filled areas also has major benefits for your mental health, which is more important than ever to be taking care of! . Try breaking up your work day with 5-10 mins walks on your break, or start or end your day with a 20-30 min brisk walk at your local park. For best health benefits, exercising on most (preferably all) days is key!

23.01.2022 Claudia Exercise Physiologist Claudia advocates that movement is medicine and uses exercise prescription to assist in the management and prevention of injuries and chronic conditions. She strives to enable individuals to take control of their health by implementing an exercise routine that realistically suits their everyday life and includes activities which they enjoy. Claudia’s special interests include Women’s Health and Pilates, but she loves to work with a vast varie...ty of clients. Her experience as a Pilates instructor allows her to compliment gym-based strength exercise with Pilates repertoire to create a dynamic exercise program. Claudia particularly loves to incorporate Pilates with Women’s Health clients, individuals experiencing lower back pain and those who would benefit from enhancing their mind-body connection. 23.01.2022 Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles The next exercise in our series gives a little love to our hip flexors. This group of muscles typically gets a bad rap for being a source of back or hip pain and ALWAYS being tight, no matter how much you stretch them. Because of this, many assume its because theyre overactive or inflexible. In reality, these little guys tend to feel angry because they get next to no attention and are under-utilised - in other words, THEYRE JUS...T WEAK. Even in strength & conditioning, hip flexion movements are generally doubled in with bodyweight abdominal (core) exercises (think sit-ups & leg lifts). Theres no reason why they shouldnt receive some specific attention with loaded, progressive exercise after being inactive in a shortened position all day while youre sitting at a desk working from home. They are muscles, and must be trained accordingly! The Standing Short-lever Hip Flexor Raise is a loaded exercise that is easy to fit into your day - try doing it during your coffee break! Start with 3x10 each side and your hips will be thanking you in no time!

22.01.2022 Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles Todays postural exercise is the Laying Back Hyperextension (+ T arms progression). . This exercise requires you to engage your quads and contract your glutes to tuck your pelvis in. From here, lifting your chest off the mat to engage your back extensors. Youll also feel your abdominals and obliques working well if youre bracing correctly through your hips and legs. ... . While going into lumbar hyperextension is typically frowned upon from a postural perspective, it is still important to train and strengthen your back extensors through their FULL range of motion, the same with any muscle. Even more important when theyve been inactive in a lengthened position all day while working from home . Try these out for 3x6, with a 1 sec hold at the top. For more challenge, and to engage your mid traps and rhomboids more, extend your arms into a T See more

12.01.2022 1 in 70 people living in Australia have Coeliac Disease. But 4 out of 5 don't actually know they have it! So it is important to know the signs. . How do I know if I have coeliac disease? .... Common symptoms: Nausea Vomiting Bloating Abdominal pain Diarrhoea/constipation Mouth ulcers Tiredness Headache Brain fog/poor concentration Deficiency in nutrients detected through blood test e.g. low iron, vitamin B12 . If you suspect you have coeliac disease it is important to see your GP to have the necessary tests (usually a blood test and a small bowel biopsy). If the tests reveal you have coeliac disease a referral to an Accredited Practising Dietitian is important. The dietitian will provide education and resources to assist you in avoiding gluten while still getting adequate nutrients from your diet. If you experience symptoms even on a gluten-free diet, then you may be accidentally consuming trace amounts of gluten OR you may have other food intolerances. A dietitian with experience in the investigation of food intolerances can help! Our dietitian Phoebe has over 5 years’ experience working with clients with food sensitivities and loves seeing the relief people get from identifying and managing their food intolerances. If you have the testing done and you are told you do not have coeliac disease you may have an intolerance to gluten or other compounds. In which case our food intolerance package is just for you! #ceoliacawarenessweek #ceoliacdisease . . . #allaboutmovement #osteopathy #pilates #pilatesbrisbane #exercisephysiology #healthylifestyle #movepainfree #bodyeducation #alliedhealth #fitness #dietitian #dietetics #nutrition #foodintolerance #guthealth #weightloss #brisbane See more

11.01.2022 Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles . Heres our final exercise for the week - the Reverse Step Up! . Its equally important to train our lower body when considering strength for postural muscles. I hope from this series so far youve picked up on the hint that ALL muscles in our body contribute to posture, and its equally important to ensure we MOVE and STRENGTHEN all muscles in our body, not just our lower traps or glute med. Many people still believe poor posture ...is what causes pain and tension, when in reality being stuck, immobile or inactive in one position for too long is the real culprit. . All you need for this surprisingly challenging exercise is a stair. Start on top of the step, put one foot behind you as if you were about to step down. Shift your hips backwards with your hands in front as you bend your hip and knee to touch your foot to the ground. Rise back up with control and repeat. . This exercise is fantastic for glute med, glute max and quads. As we all know, glute med is vital to lateral hip stability and balance. Instead of targeting it alone, its both more time efficient and beneficial to functional movement to train glute med alongside our prime movers for leg and hip extension (glute max, quads). . Lowering your body weight using one leg is also a fantastic option for no-equipment overload to build functional strength. The additional challenge to your balance makes this exercise greater bang for your buck, as you dont need to complete many before fatiguing and ensuring some quality stimulus. . Try 3x6 if youre starting off, and work your way towards 3x10 See more

11.01.2022 We still have a few spaces left in our pilates group classes run by Anouk! . Call us on 3856 3607 to jump back into a class or if youre new to Pilates we can help organise an initial assessment to get you started!

11.01.2022 Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles . Time for something a little more challenging! Next up is the Plank into Downward dog, a yoga inspired exercise that assists with range of motion & strength for your shoulders, chest, arms, abdomen and legs. . This exercise is one of my go-tos since isolation began, as it utilises only your body-weight to effectively strengthen much of your upper body and abdomen. Its a brilliant option to break up long periods of sitting too, as it... mobilises your entire posterior chain and combats the impact of long periods of gravity-induced thoracic flexion. . Give this one a go at 3 x 8 (ensure a good 60 seconds rest in between each, or try supersetting with one of the previous exercises in this series ) . For greater arm & chest strength benefits, add a push-up into each rep too! See more

10.01.2022 Day 1/7 - Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles We begin this exercise series with a huge bang for your buck movement - yes youre seeing 3 exercises condensed into 1! Lets call this: Face Pull into Overhead Press. ... This shoulder series strengthens all the posterior pulling muscles AND some challenging overhead movements, which are vital to keeping the muscles that control your shoulder blades in tip top shape. Using a band will work like fire too, as it requires additional work to maintain control with the eccentric portion of this movement (i.e. the lowering bit where you reverse your movements to return to a starting position). More work = more load on your muscles = greater adaptive stimulus = greater strength! Try this exercise to break up your mid morning sitting time 3 x 6 with a lighter band to start (rest 60 secs in between each set)

10.01.2022 Hows your headspace? . It is more important than ever to check in with both our own and our loved ones mental health. Social isolation and financial disruptions have all impacted us in different ways and are unfortunately two major factors that may contribute to poor mental health. . Fortunately, exercise is highly protective of our mental health! But how much should we engage in to benefit our headspace?... . In a 2017 study that followed more than 33,000 healthy adults over 11 years (Harvey et al.), researchers found that as little as 60 minutes of exercise per week at any intensity could prevent cases of depression. . Additionally, these 60 minutes didnt need to occur all at once to maintain a protective benefit against depression they could be built up in any way! . To start making some positive changes to your headspace, try 3 x 20 min walks during the week, or break it up further into 6 x 10 min walks. The ultimate message here is that something is always better than nothing, more is better than less, and theres ALWAYS another way to modify physical activity to suit you best! . If you need support, please dont hesitate to get help straight away and call Lifeline on 13 11 14. . 07.01.2022 Experiencing some working from home woes? For a majority of us, back and neck aches have become a daily occurrence since losing nearly ALL incidental exercise in our day. Incidental exercise is all the physical activity we accumulate throughout our day - intentional or not! A great way to keep active and healthy (especially if youre time poor) is to make choices to increase your movement throughout your day. Think taking the stairs instead of the escalator, or grabbing you...r 3pm coffee at a shop 10 mins walk away. This extra exercise in our day can be super protective of our mental and physical health. Without it, our mood and body can suffer and often this manifests as non-specific aches and pain. Our Exercise Physiologist, Riley has created 7 helpful videos of exercises to include in your work day to get some of that incidental exercise back in your day! These exercises are also working to strengthen many key postural muscles that don't get much love while we're in front of the computer. Keep an eye out for a new video each day and maximize your movements with All About Movement

04.01.2022 IS LOW FAT DAIRY HIGHER IN SUGAR? . . . It can be confusing when trying to choose milk, yoghurt and cheese. There are so many different brands and types available at the supermarket these days. When it comes to dairy it is not one size fits all. What might be a good choice for one person is not necessarily the best choice for another.... . But one myth that needs to be busted is the added sugar in dairy. Let’s break this down into the 3 common forms of dairy: MILK, YOGHURT & CHEESE: . MILK: does not contain added sugar regardless of if it is full fat, low fat or skim milk. The sugar present in these milks is lactose which is naturally present. One exception would be flavoured milk drinks e.g., chocolate milk and ice coffee drinks which usually do contain added sugars. . YOGHURT: while it’s true that some low-fat yoghurts contain added sugars, this is not true for all yoghurts. There are many brands that are low fat AND low sugar or no added sugar. . CHEESE: reduced fat varieties does not contain added sugar..The choice whether to go low fat or full fat with regards to dairy should not be influenced by concerns over added sugars as these are really only an issue with yoghurt and can be easily avoided with a bit of label reading. If weight loss is your goal or you have high cholesterol, then low fat dairy may be a better option for you. . . . . #allaboutmovement #osteopathy #pilates #pilatesbrisbane #exercisephysiology #healthylifestyle #movepainfree #bodyeducation #alliedhealth #fitness #dietitian #dietetics #nutrition #foodintolerance #guthealth #weightloss #brisbane #pregnancy #sugar #mythbusting See more

03.01.2022 Did you know that nearly two-thirds of Australians over the age of 50 have low bone mass, 70% of whom are female? Did you also know that by the time we're in our late 20's, we have put on ALL the bone mass we possibly can for our life, and from there on we can only LOSE it? Bone health is especially important to consider for women. Oestrogen is very protective of maintaining bone mass. When females reach menopause, they lose the protective benefit of oestrogen and their b...ones begin to lose mass at an accelerated rate. This loss can weaken bones, and make them more prone to fractures. Fortunately, there are specific types of exercise that are very protective of bone health, and can limit the rate of bone mass loss. Exercise that utilises rapid loading, impact loading, and progressive strength training are all beneficial in maintaining bone health, however must be specifically prescribed to an individual to suit their body and fitness levels. Exercise truly is medicine! Here are a few examples of 'bone-healthy' exercises that our Exercise Physiologist, Riley, has prescribed to assist people with maintaining their bone health. If you'd like to learn more about how to utilise exercise to help manage your bone health, speak to our friendly Reception team and we can organise an appointment for you! See more

01.01.2022 Exercises to Strengthen Postural Muscles The Buddha Stretch is a pilates exercise for chest and shoulder mobility. Mobility exercises dont improve muscular strength (not enough load placed on your muscles) but they are important for maintaining healthy joint range of motion and tend to be more effective (and pleasant) than passive stretches. Start by lying on your back or on a foam roller parallel to your spine. Bring your hands together and actively push them together in a... prayer position. Move your hands toward your head and press your forearms together. Keep raising your hands and forearms as high as you can to feel a chest, side abdominal and shoulder stretch. Open your hands to the side range out your chest further, then begin the motion again! Try doing 20 reps of these during your afternoon tea break to help maintain healthy range of motion through your upper body!
