24.01.2022 Who would have thought, SLEEP IS LIKE FOOD? I know Ive mentioned this before but I feel SO DAM STRONGLY about it, I just have to share these super important facts again! FOOD is a biological need, food is energy for the body and poor quality food (junk food) damages the body. A little junk food is okay but lots is BAD NEWS ... SLEEP is a biological need, sleep is energy for the brain and poor quality sleep harms the brain. A little junk sleep is okay but lots is not. Poor quality sleep can be thought of as JUNK SLEEP and junk sleep is just as bad as junk food. We know that junk sleep causes exhaustion, impaired mood, impaired social and academic performance, impaired cognitive development, impaired hand-eye coordination, increased stress hormones and impaired glucose control. Children can become more irritable, hyperactive, oppositional, fussy and less adaptable. Send a message to request a FREE CALL to find out how we can help get the quality sleep they need

24.01.2022 What stage are YOU up to? Love this, from Babyology

23.01.2022 Who can RELATE? This was me, once upon a time! HBU? Thinking back on it now, I did it pretty tough back in the day with my own 3 cherubs.... I didnt know it at the time, but life with a non sleeping kid or two (or three) can actually be easier than you think ... Its about having a plan, being accountable and having a support person to be by your side. I wish I knew that back then! Ive done it myself, struggled 3 x over with my own kids pretty much on my own, by myself, every single day with no help, so I know how it feels! My husband was not involved in settling our babies, not from fault of his but just by circumstance. Things are different now than they were in my day. What does your day look like?

22.01.2022 SLEEP TIP Daily physical activity will help your baby/child sleep soundly This is something we dont often think about consciously and its understandably hard for parents to put aside time to focus on physical activity, considering all of our extra pressures. ... Im finding that more and more children (no matter how old) are getting less physical activity than usual in our current times of isolation. Babies and older children all need to expel energy physically, just like we do as adults. It helps with sleep. Babies need lots of floor time and older kids need to be able to run! If you have a small house or backyard, you may need to get creative. SHARE your personal trials and tribulations and tell us what YOU are doing or struggling with in isolation https://allaboutsleep.com.au/

21.01.2022 CASE STUDY "At 4 months, Elijah relied on his dummy to settle at bedtime, he had short stretches of sleep, was waking grumpy and he needed help to have his dummy replaced. We did some sleep training with him and within only a few days, Elijah was able to self-settle for naps and resettle himself overnight when he wasnt due a feed. He no longer needs a dummy for sleep or resettling and is having much longer stretches of sleep " Side note: Babies who rely on a dummy will need a parent to help plug it back in when they wake until they are developmentally ready to learn this skill themselves, around 8 months of age.

21.01.2022 GREAT NEWS! For parents who do not live in or around the Toowoomba area, you are definitely not alone! The fact is, when I work with you whether you live locally or not, your personal situation and needs are always my priority and remote assistance works like a charm just like any other.... 20.01.2022 QU: Why is Debb smiling? ANS: Baby Oliver sleeps through the night! I had the pleasure recently of working with mum Debb, to help with her baby Olivers night sleep and what a transformation! It makes me so happy to see parents and children getting the sleep they need ... Here is Debbs story: "Tori is a sleep genius! She helped us to go from 4-5 wakes a night with feeds to NONE in less than a week! Were now two weeks in with a beautiful baby boy sleeping 6:30pm-7am every night! She gave us the skills and confidence to listen to our son and help guide him to self-settle overnight and what a transformation it has been. We are so incredibly grateful for Tori. Such a grounded, calm approach when we were 9 months sleep deprived. Thank you so much " PS. Thank you, Debb for your kind words. I loved getting to know you and Oliver and will miss our catch ups!

19.01.2022 SLEEP TIP! Looking for ideas to improve your baby's sleep? Consider your baby's LONG TERM SLEEP ASSOCIATIONS.... Are you happy for your baby to have a dummy until close to age 3? If not, ditch it by 5 or 6 months. If you are, then you will need to assist your baby and plug it back in for them when they wake at night or after a short nap, until closer to 8 months. This is when they are generally old enough to learn to find and replace their own dummy. Do you want them to have a comforter? Introduce this sometime around seven months. Are you happy to continue to rock or feed your baby to sleep at bedtime and each time baby wakes at night? If yes, you don't need to change a thing. If not, you can wean your baby off these things. You can teach your baby how to go to sleep independently after the age of about four to six months. Want to chat? Book a free call with me https://calendly.com/allaboutsleep

16.01.2022 Lets talk about Sleep Training! Most of you know how I feel about sleep training in general. You know that I will never tell a parent that they should sleep train their child because there is no should. Its a choice. You know it upsets me that sleep deprived mums are often made to feel crappier than they already do and sometimes even by other mums. Parenting pressure... Lack of confidence Guilt, guilt and more guilt Its actually not the fault of the mums out there who feel they need to put other mums down or who push a specific agenda. It comes mostly from lack of education and scaremongering from online parenting hangouts. These groups claim to promote gentle, caring and nurturing parenting practices but how is it caring to disregard the need for good sleep for both parent and child? Waking frequently at night is fragmented sleep, which negatively impacts both a mother and childs health and wellbeing. Fact. I believe that as mothers, we are pretty much all gentle, caring and nurturing by default. Yes, we all parent differently and that means nurturing will look differently for all of us. No, you dont have to sleep train your baby but if you choose to, please dont feel guilty or afraid that it will harm your baby! Ive said it a million times before: sleep training does not equal cry it out. Yes, your baby will cry as they learn to sleep independently, even with the gentlest of sleep training. Yes, crying is your babys way of communicating, but not all crying means distress (thats a whole other post). If you have been thinking about sleep training, you might be wondering when and even if sleep training might be something to consider. The following is a list of just some of the reasons my past clients decided to try some sleep training. They are all very common and all completely valid. Parents were at their wits end, not coping Night feedings were becoming more frequent (not newborns) Mum was going back to work and needed more sleep to function Parents felt pressured because another baby was on the way It was negatively impacting the relationship with their partner Mums physical or mental health was being affected (lack of sleep negatively affects the immune system amongst other things) They started reactive bed sharing and wanted to change this Their four month old went from sleeping long stretches to waking every couple of hours at night Parents felt like they were in survival mode and they were repeating the same things over and over with no positive change Parents felt anxiety around their childs bedtime or about coming home from work, knowing they had a stressful night ahead Mum or dad didnt like being a parent anymore Why do you think some parents feel reluctant to try sleep training or might be anti sleep training? 15.01.2022 PERFECT!!! "What the?" you might be thinking, "how can this be perfect?" 2 more weeks left of lockdown for poor Melbournians I feel your pain I spent many years as a student and working in Melbourne and was born in Mansfield, VIC, so I have a connection with you and fee your pain!... Take heart my southern friends, because there IS something good about lockdown ... if there was ever a best time to teach your child to sleep well, LOCKDOWN IS IT Staying at home means its easier for you to stick to a routine Staying at home means you have more time to focus on your kids Staying at home means you can stress less, as you know you dont have to get up in the morning and show up at work, or race around at a million miles an hour getting kids to school, appointments or activities Staying at home means that when your child is sleeping for a long middle of the day nap (yes, they will do this), you can put your feet up for longer than 5 minutes and relax, knowing you have TIME Staying at home (for some) means your partner is home more too, so you can have help at hand if you need it You can teach your kid to sleep through the night in less than 2 weeks! 14.01.2022 Something you may not know about me: I love being on my own! Ive always loved solitude. Is that weird? There was a time when I was younger that I wished I could be someone else, the person who felt happiest when in a crowd. I honestly thought that the older and wiser I got, the more I would enjoy having lots of people around me all the time. In fact the opposite is true. The older I became, the more I understood that its OK to actually like being by myself. Dont get me w...rong, I love a good party and I love spending time with my friends and family, but theres just something so liberating about enjoying my own company and being OK with that. I love the silence I love the fact that I can hear myself think I love the freedom I havent always had the liberty of solitude of course. After all, I raised three children, I did further study and worked various jobs over the years. I embraced life to the fullest and crammed so much in to each day. I loved the noise and busyness of that stage in my life and although it wasnt easy, there was never a dull moment. It was so much fun! Fast-forward to now and my kids have now officially flown the coop. Im on my own and Im not sorry that I like it . Please dont misunderstand me, I love my kids and they will always be the centre of my universe, but theyre not kids anymore and they need space to build their own lives. Its a weird kind of feeling to suddenly have all the time in the world to myself and to be honest, its not been that hard to get used to. Maybe for some people its a hard concept to come to terms with but for me, its a chance to enjoy the silence hear myself think have the freedom to do as I please Im truly grateful that in these current times of uncertainty and lockdown that I dont have little children at home and I really do feel for mums and mums to be who are navigating these stormy waters in a time of such uncertainty. For these mums, there is no solitude no silence no freedom Its a hard gig Do you know what kept me sane back in my day? Knowing I could put the kids to bed and they would sleep all night! Come 7pm, I knew I could relax and I could enjoy the silence hear myself think have the freedom to do as I pleased Oh the joy of it! Its not selfish to want time for yourself. You need time for you too. If you had time to yourself, what would you most love to do?

12.01.2022 QU: WHY ARE PARENTS CONNIE & BOB SMILING? ANS: Ollie now sleeps through the night! I recently had the pleasure of working 1-1 with this lovely family. Seeing how their lives have dramatically turned around for the better is why I LOVE what I do Here is their story ...... "Our experience with All About Sleep (Tori) was LIFE CHANGING! We came across Tori through a friend who highly recommended All About Sleep. Our 7 month old son (Ollie) was waking frequently at night and no matter what adjustments I made, I couldnt fix this. We did the initial consultation with Tori and within 2 nights, Ollie was sleeping through. This was a magical feeling for my husband and I. Toris packages were detailed and simple. We were so well educated by Toris program and truly felt very well looked after with daily contact, check ins and the ability to run everything by her at any time. It was such a special feeling knowing I could ask any questions or call if needed. By the end of our 2 weeks, Ollie hadnt turned back and now, almost turning 9 months, still sleeps through 7-7 every night. We love spending our days with Ollie, with sleep under our belt! It makes for a delightful home and a happy family all round. We live on a farm in Cootamundra, NSW and with Tori in QLD, there were never problems with communication or the program. Everything was perfect. Tori also assisted us with day to day tweaks such as food, activities and teething. We still talk between us how happy we were with the process and outcome. Not only did sleep improve, I noticed a huge change in Ollies interest in solids and milk as well as his general mood during the day. For any mother considering a sleep consultant, you wont regret being in touch with Tori. Tori, thank you again, we look forward to being in touch if needed in the future or with another baby! 11.01.2022 Have you ever tried putting your baby or toddler to bed later, hoping they would sleep later in the morning, only to have them continue to wake up early or wake even earlier? Arghhh The thing is, overtired children are more likely to wake up early. So moving bedtime later will probably give you an even earlier start to the day If you are struggling with early morning wakings right now, try putting your child to bed EARLIER, even fifteeen to 30 minutes earlier. Sounds craz...y but believe me, it can help. You might just need our Early Morning Waking Toolbox which will teach you what you need to know to say bye bye early mornings once and for all https://allaboutsleep.com.au//early-morning-waking-toolbox/ Not sure if this is for you? 10.01.2022 "TICKET TO SLEEP!" So I was feeling a bit flat the other day, not really sure why, but I felt pretty sht to be honest. Then someone I really respect snapped me out of my self-indulgent misery and said, now hang on a sec, you have so much to give others, so why not just focus your time and energy on what you do best? It made me think... It made me stand taller. It made me feel stronger. Said respected ally (thanks so much Gemma) went on to ask me: "WHAT MAKES YOU AWESOME AT WHAT YOU DO?" I felt a bit stumped to be honest, I was put on the spot. What I really thought was, now thats a bit blow your own trumpet sort of thing and "a bit weird and embarrassing"! Then I thought a bit harder and it hit me like a tonne of bricks: "Why shouldnt I shout out about what I do and why I do it well?" It was actually quite liberating and uplifting to think about this and decide to take action, so Im going to write it down and blow that trumpet hard! Ive worked long and hard to learn what I do, in heaps of areas, but most recently as a Baby & Child Sleep Consultant I get amazing results and have heaps of testimonials from past clients as proof Im a mum of 3 myself with extensive life experience and my own past battles with sleep deprivation, which gives me a relatable perspective as to what my clients need I dont judge - this is key to me for an open and honest relationship with my clients Most importantly, I care And did I mention ... I GET RESULTS? I am proud to say that Ive had a 100% success rate to date, with helping sleep deprived mums reach their goals Im good at what I do. No, actually, Im one of the bloody BEST in my field and I know it. I go the extra mile and I CARE Please share my post and spread the word if you think someone in your circle of friends might be interested. It might just be their their TICKET TO SLEEP! in Toowoomba, Queensland.

10.01.2022 STOP AND LISTEN BEFORE RESPONDING https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1201415/#R30 This study found that waiting just three minutes before you go into your childs room if they wake at night is the single biggest factor that determines whether they will be sleeping through by 12 months. Waiting before responding gives your child a chance to go back to sleep themselves. ... All parents differ as to how long they feel they can wait before going to their child. My challenge for you tonight is to try and wait just 1 or 2 minutes longer than you would normally do. If you usually go straight in to your child at the first peep, wait a minute or two before going in. If you usually give your child 5 or 10 minutes to try to settle on their own, wait for 2 or 3 minutes longer. It is common to find that a child will resettle themselves back to sleep right at the point when a parent feels they should go in to help them. Try it. It might just be what your child needs.

07.01.2022 EARLY TO BED! Who would have thought this could fix a child's early morning wake up? It might just be the missing piece of the puzzle for your family. Give it a go, you've got nothing to lose

07.01.2022 EARLY MORNING WAKE UPS are HARD, especially in winter! From around 4am, sleep phases are lightest, which means its easier for your child to wake and stay awake at this time The good news is, there are things you can do to prevent the occurrence of early morning wake ups, or address them if you are in the thick of it now. One thing I suggest you do if your child is waking early is to make sure the room is super DARK, which might sound obvious, but its surprising how light s...ome rooms are in the mornings. The thing is, ANY light coming through blinds, above curtains etc will filter through your little ones eyelids and trigger the brain to think its wake up time. Light is one external factor that entrains our biological clock to know its morning time. Also, if the room is dark, your child is more likely to drift back off to sleep because there are no distractions. Try this test: sit in your childs room with the curtains drawn and door shut in the morning (early if possible). If you can see artwork on the wall, see objects clearly or read, then the room is not dark enough. A cheap way of darkening the room is to tape (key word here is tape) black plastic or foil to the windows, covering all cracks. Or use rolled up towels against cracks. Try it. It might just be the answer you are looking for! Looking for a DIY solution to early morning wakings? 06.01.2022 QU: Why are Rachael and little Eddy smiling? ANS: Eddy can sleep through the night 15 month old Eddy (what a cutie ) was waking UP TO SIX TIMES overnight (phew )... The only way to get him back to sleep was for his mum, Rachael, to feed him. Needless to say, Rachael was exhausted Rachael and her husband had spent weeks together trying to help Eddy to learn to resettle himself without needing a feed. They tried everything under the sun, but nothing seemed to work, and this was causing terrible anxiety and stress for them all Although it wasnt easy, Rachael consistently followed her sleep plan for Eddy and in week three, Eddy slept through the night for the first time in months Want to know the secret to teaching a baby or toddler to sleep all night long? 06.01.2022 SELF SETTLING Tip If you want to be successful with teaching your baby or toddler to self settle to sleep (go to sleep without assistance from you), its so very important to have a REALISTIC GOAL, otherwise you are setting yourself up to fail from the start. A realistic goal is age appropriate and achievable.... Examples of a realistic goals might be things like: 1. I want to teach my 5 month old to have a longer lunch time nap 2. I want to teach my 10 month old to sleep through the night with no feeds 3. I want to teach my 12 week old twins to sleep in the cot, not on me. Examples of unrealistic goals might be 1. I want to teach my bed sharing 3 year old to sleep in her own bed before I go back to work in 2 days time 2. I want to teach my 8 week old to self settle for naps 3. I want my 4 month old to sleep through the night with no feeds UNSURE whether or not a goal is realistic and achievable? Pop it in the comments and I can help :) https://allaboutsleep.com.au/

04.01.2022 I received an email from a lovely mum who I worked with recently and thought Id share it with you because it shows how successful a GENTLE SLEEP TRAINING approach can be. Amanda was sceptical and literally quite scared about the thought of sleep training, mainly at the thought of any crying. So I wrote her a plan that did not compromise her parenting style, one that allowed her to be close to Bethany, to pick her up and even breast feed her to soothe her. It took some time b...ut Bethany learned how to sleep independently with minimal tears. Needless to say, Amanda was amazed at the transformation and the positive knock on affect that more sleep for everyone had, on all areas of her familys life. Here is an excerpt from her email: "We just wanted to email you to say thank you so much for all your help, support & encouragement.. we really appreciate the time & effort you went to to help our little family & for your knowledge, reassurance & kindness. We are very grateful that we were able to implement a softer & kinder approach for Bethany & we are so excited about the results, but even more so, the new skills & direction we have in being able to assist her to sleep & feeling more confident in what we are doing. Thank you! Your help & LOTS of prayers enabled us to cope through the process, to be consistent, reasonable & calm. We now see many improvements in the way our family operates each day & how we are ALL able to function better with the additional sleep. Its all very exciting!" 04.01.2022 QUESTION: What is a Sleep Association and is it a bad thing for my child? ANSWER: No, not necessarily. A sleep association is an action or thing that helps your child fall asleep and it is not necessarily a bad thing. A negative sleep association usually means a child relies on a parent or caregiver to do something for them that helps them get off to sleep. A positive sleep association is something the child does, or relates to, that helps them get off to sleep independentl...y. Negative associations for older children include things like feeding to sleep, rocking, bouncing, driving and being pushed in a stroller. They are not usually sustainable. Positive sleep associations are things like being put into a sleeping bag, lights dimmed, white noise, cuddling a lovey or teddy, sucking on fingers, sucking on a dummy if its not causing sleep issues or rhythmic rocking back and forth. If you can focus on positive sleep associations and wean off the negative as your baby gets older, you will be one step closer to helping your child get to sleep at bedtime, and having them go back to sleep themselves when they wake overnight!

03.01.2022 What is a sleep plan and why might you need one? Firstly, consider what the word plan really means and then think of that in the context of sleep. Put simply, the plan is the process and better sleep is what we would achieve if we follow the plan. Definition of the word Plan:... 1. An intention or decision about what one is going to do 2. A detailed proposal for doing or achieving something It is universally recognised that one of most important factors needed to be successful with most things in life is to PLAN. Now, just for a minute, look at the key words within the definition of plan above: intention decision detail proposal achieve and you should get an idea as to what is involved in a sleep plan. Whilst we all have aspirations and dreams, few people have the time to write down the steps which detail how to go about achieving their goals. Understandably, for sleep-deprived parents lacking in time and energy, making a sleep plan can seem like a lot of work, a form of torture! Where to start? What to do? Not enough time! This is where a sleep consultant, like myself, can help. A sleep consultant looks at your personal situation and intention, supports your decisions and writes you a detailed proposal and outline for achieving your goals (for example, to teach your child to sleep through the night). Then they support you, guide you and help you follow through = you achieve the goals you set out in the plan. 02.01.2022 "My experience with All About Sleep was a timely saviour, Tori was able to help me through two sleep stages with my daughter. Firstly, an extremely overtired, catnapping 8 week old and again at 4mths with a feed to sleep association. Tori was able to reverse my overtired baby, teach her to connect sleep cycles, self-settle and establish a sleep routine. I enjoyed working with Tori, she was knowledgeable, encouraging and genuinely there for support. 02.01.2022 SLEEP TIP! Aim for a set wake time for your child in the morning between approximately 6.30 and 7.30am. WHAT does this look like?... a) you might have to resettle your child at an early morning wakeup if your child wakes up before the time you set for your wakeup time. b) you would need to wake a late sleeper who wants to snooze on after 7am. WHY? 1. It helps balance the day as far as nap times being predictable, it helps ensure naps fall into biological sleep windows (best nap times) and helps you reach a bedtime where your child feels ready for sleep 2. It helps to program your childs natural internal body clocks real time with external time, which basically just means it makes it a lot easier for your child to go to sleep and sleep soundly! I say YAY to all that Book a free call to chat about your little ones routine here https://allaboutsleep.com.au/all-about-sleep-book-now/

01.01.2022 Its interesting how the terms SCHEDULE and ROUTINE are often used interchangeably. They are actually not the same thing although they have similar objectives. A schedule is a plan that sets out specific times and order of events for the day, like wake-ups, nap times and bedtime, and the timings need to be adhered to for the plan to run smoothly throughout the day. A routine is similar in that it involves a specific order of events that are performed consistently in the sam...e order, but not necessarily at specific times. For example, your bedtime routine might be bath, get dressed, feed, cuddle and into bed or you may have a general daytime routine that looks similar each day around meals, naps and activities. Following a schedule or just a more relaxed routine is a personal preference and there are positives for both. My personal stance is that I love an organised day with some flexibility so I sit somewhere in the middle. When it comes to naps and bedtime, biological factors mean that time of day definitely matters, which is why I believe a flexible schedule with a contingency plan can work well. Children are creatures of habit and thrive on predictability, so if nothing else, start by offering a consistent bedtime routine (do the same things in the same order) each night and an adapted/shortened version for naps. Also, keep an eye on time spent awake between sleeps. Are you a SCHEDULE or ROUTINE family or a little bit of BOTH?

01.01.2022 JUNK SLEEP is BAD NEWS! It's bad for the brain, just like junk food is bad news for the body SLEEPING is like FEEDING in that we can't expect our children to grow well if the majority of what they eat is junk food. Junk sleep is sleep that is regularly interrupted or not long enough in duration. We need to understand that sleep is a biological necessity just like food, although it's not an automatically regulated process like the control of body temperature. You might n...eed to help your child with best times for sleep and teach them how to sleep well. This brings me to this KEY PIECE OF ADVICE for you: Please put your child to bed at night when they need to go to bed (sometimes early). I completely understand that it can be hard when dad (or mum) get home late from work and they haven't seen their child for long, if at all, that day. The thing is, we need to think about WHAT'S BEST for THE CHILD. Your child needs sleep. The good thing is, children of all ages are super resilient and adaptable. Of course they need you, but the truth is, it's not going to harm them if they go to bed without seeing you much for a day or two. You would just try and aim to spend quality time together with your child on the days you ARE free. If sleep is like food, perhaps ask yourself these questions: "Would I be happy to withhold milk or food from my baby or toddler if they were due a feed or meal, just so that myself or my partner have the opportunity to read them a story and kiss them goodnight?" Is my baby overtired? Is my baby or child up too late at night? Consistently late bedtime = junk sleep = overtiredness = not good for anyone in the family Click the link to book a free 15 minute call so we can chat about your child's sleep https://allaboutsleep.com.au/all-about-sleep-book-now/
