24.01.2022 Leptospirosis Update: Unfortunately there has been a reported case on the Lower North Shore. There have not been any reported cases on the Northern Beaches to date and we are currently recommending that if you walk, exercise your dogs outside of a 5 km radius of Crows Nest, they should be safe.... However, some clients are electing to have Leptospirosis Vaccination given as a precaution. Please call Allambie Vet on 9905 0505 to discuss or book an appointment. We have plenty of Leptospirosis Vaccination in stock

18.01.2022 COVID19 UPDATE Dear Allambie Vet Family, The past few months have been a rollercoaster. None of us could have foreseen the position we find ourselves in today. We appreciate how our clients have adapted to our new and changing COVID safe protocols over the past few months. We have been very fortunate to be able to continue to care for your furry friends during the pandemic. ... Following the NSW Governments recent recommendations. Our staff will all be wearing face masks. We would ask that our clients consider wearing a mask. Please do not hesitate to ask for a mask upon arrival if you have forgotten or don’t have your own. Please remember when visiting Allambie Vet: Social distancing in the hospital at all times. Use the hand sanitiser when entering reception. We ask that only one person accompanies your pet in the consult. If multiple people are present we will have to consult in the side garden or park next to the hospital. Repeat medications and prescription diets can be pre-ordered. Once medications are dispensed, our receptionist will call for payment. Medications and food will be placed outside under cover for collection. For those who are concerned, the elderly or immunocompromised people we are more than happy to provide consultations outside or at your car on request. Thank you for your understanding and patience during these challenging and difficult times. We can’t wait to reintroduce that personal touch we have all been missing so much Let’s work together to protect our community!

10.01.2022 Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) - what is it and how do we treat it! Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a combination of abnormalities affecting short faced dogs and cats, known as brachycephalic breeds. Although these animals are very cute and loveable, BOAS effects the quality and length of life of affected breeds. The main health concerns for brachycephalic breeds diagnosed with BOAS include increased risk of overheating, Increased pres...sure and risk of airway collapse (both windpipe and lung airways) and a decrease in oxygenation to vital organs (such as the brain) - all secondary to the increased airway obstruction. Here's a breakdown on what's available for treatment and preventative care for our little flat faced friends.

05.01.2022 Heat Stroke Warning for Pets The first seriously hot days of summer are on their way. Temperature is set to reach 40 degrees over the weekend, we need to remember to keep our furry friends comfortable too. If your pet starts incessant panting, drooling, is restless, has a bright red tongue, is lethargic, has vomiting or diarrhoea, shows weakness, is collapsed, has muscle tremors or seizures - contact your vet immediately. ... Factors that may make Heat Stroke more likely: obesity, brachycephalic breeds, excessive exercise, long/thick coats, dehydration, heart disease or respiratory disease. Keep pets inside in the cool with you! Pets enjoy air conditioning and fans as much as we do! Ensure they have free access to fresh water all day long. Try not to transport pets in the car unnecessarily, and as always - don't leave them unattended in the car. Believe it or not, we still see heat stroke victims from this scenario, and we cannot always save them. Damp towels can help provide some relief to pets, as can a fine mist water spray. Freeze treats for pets, and add ice cubes to their water bowl. If your pet has recently been affected by tick paralysis, they will be facing an even tougher time today as the tick toxin prevents the animal from thermoregulating normally. Keep them cool and stress free, and call your vet if you have any concerns. Limit exercise for your dog today. Not only is it far too hot for aerobic exercise, but the road and pathways will be boiling hot which can cause burns to your dog's paws. Heat stroke can be fatal and is an emergency. If you suspect you pet may be affected, please contact Allambie Vet on 9905 0505.

01.01.2022 Gastro is going around again We have seen a large number of gastroenteritis cases in the last couple of days. All these dogs presented with frequent vomiting, inappetance, some had diarrhoea, and most were quite dehydrated. These symptoms can be due to a number of conditions however as there have been so many dogs with the same signs, a gastric virus is suspected. Gastro viruses are highly contagious and can spread through the dog community quickly. The virus is passed th...rough saliva, vomit and faeces. The virus can pass through direct contact with another dog or through dogs licking or sniffing surfaces (eg poles/fences) or drinking from shared water bowls. If your dog has developed any of these signs, then please keep them home and away from other dogs until they are better to help stop it spreading further. If they are unwell or showing any of the above symptoms then we recommend a consultation. See more
