09.01.2022 VALE Subzero Australias favourite racehorse passed away today; 10 weeks after his adored owner Graham Salisbury. Subbie, 32, was euthanased after experiencing ...heart failure. Bendigo Equine Hospital vet Sarah Jalim put Subbie down around 2.30pm today; the same time Graham passed away in Bendigo in June - which was also a Saturday. Racing will never have ambassadors quite like these two - the Melbourne Cup winner and the clerk of the course - and those who enjoyed their hospital, nursing home, race day and school visits will be counting themselves lucky they met this special pair. Our sympathy to Grahams wife Anita and their children Anthony and Nikki, and extended family.

06.01.2022 Equine Health and Performance Centre DE-WORMING PROTOCOLS FAECAL EGG COUNTS (FEC) - Also known as ‘Worm Egg Counts’... - You can come into the EHPC and collect and faecal egg count kit for free - Otherwise drop off a sample of fresh manure to reception - A member of staff will be in contact with your faecal egg count results, normally within 24 hours. - As of the 09/11/2020, the price is currently $29, however this is subject to change so please confirm with the clinic at the time of dropping the sample off. FOALS - Recommend treating with fenbendazole (Panacur) at 2 3 months and again at 4-5 months of age o Keep confined for 24 48 hours and monitor manures for appearance of ascarids. Figure 1 Mature ascarid in faeces from a foal o FEC recommended so faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) can be performed to ensure efficacy of de-worming product used FECRT performed 2 weeks after de-worming product was given If Ascarid eggs (Parascaris spp) are still present after fenbendazole deworming, then a pyrantel containing product should be used. - Faecal egg count at 7-8 months of age to target required de-wormer o If ascarids consider pyrantel or fenbendazole with FECRT o If strongyles - consider ivermectin (or moxidectin depending on timing of year) - Moxidectin should be given in autumn or winter time when foals are at least 4 months of age. YOUNG STOCK - Immunity to worms is not fully developed until 5 or 6 years of age - Recommend at least 3 monthly FEC to assess worm burden - If >200-250 epg, then recommend de-worming with ivermectin unless autumn/winter time o Also recommend performing FECRT 2 weeks after de-worming product was administered. - Recommend routine de-worming with moxidectin (Equest + tape) in autumn time o Also, possibly in spring if pasture overstocked, if manure clearance has not been performed or if very mild winter - Recommend routine deworming with praziquantel & ivermectin in spring to target tapeworms ADULT HORSES - Faecal egg counts should be performed every 3 months, but at least twice per year. - Recommend moxidectin in autumn/winter period - De-worm according to FEC results - If >200 250 epg recommend de-worming - If you have a natural water source on your property: recommend routine deworming with praziquantel & ivermectin (Razor) in spring to target tapeworms AGED HORSES - Horses >15 years of age or those who have PPID (Cushing’s) should have FEC performed every 3 months - Immunity to worms may be lower than in horses aged 6 15 years - De-worm according to results - Moxidectin given in autumn/winter period outside of last de-worming products effective stage (normally >3 months of de-worming). GENERAL PASTURE/PADDOCK MANAGEMENT - Removing manure from the paddocks at least twice per week - Rotationally grazing, either resting paddocks entirely for at least 1 2 months - Can rotate paddock grazing with ruminants to reduce egg/larval burdens on pasture - Do not wean foals into the same paddock every year.
