22.01.2022 Taking a step backwards When we’re training sometimes we are so focused on what we want that we rush the job. We get one or two repetitions by accident almost and then we’re pressing ahead for the next thing. Sometimes though we need to be aware that the dog hasn’t quite got it and we might need to take a step back. I gave three videos here of Sparkie at work. The object is to touch the button but even though he does touch it you can see he has no focus on the button. The fr...isbee he hits perfectly but the button he near misses and really doesn’t look at it. Admittedly he’s done foot touch with the frisbee often and after the videos I switched to a nose touch and he was much more successful. You can see in the videos that I built his confidence with the frisbee touch and went back to the button. Sometimes a step backwards helps. A good recipe for success is practice something you know try something new go back to something you do well. Finishing with a game will help you to retain 40 percent more of what you’ve learnt. This video shows Sparkie learning a new trick under distraction as always :) See more
21.01.2022 7 tricks 7 days Round 2 day 4 Focus Use a lure your dog likes and bring up towards your face. ... Hold and use your reward marker when the dog looks at your face. Add the cue word after a few successful repetitions Use your hand signal without the treat to cement the behaviour. Reward randomly once your dog understands the trick.

16.01.2022 why use MAT training, the Mat has several other training names as well stationing place training etc. the value of the mat is that you can teach your dog a calm position, an spot where they need to just unwind and relax. because there are no other activities on the agenda. but it is also a great tool for learning to communicate clearly with your dog, if you are indecisive you dog sees it, the mat has a set of instructions and boundaries that are easy for you as a handler to follow and to explain to your dog, you can practice foundations safely that will help you with everything else you teach your dog into the future. If you do it well it is one of the most boring exercises that you will ever do, but it sets a fantastic foundation that helps cure a pack load of behaviours. Want to know more? send us a message.
16.01.2022 7 tricks 7 days Round 2 day 3 Hoop jump... Hold hoop in the hand closest to the dog treats in the hand furtherest from the dog Ask the dog to sit /wait then lure through the hoop The hoop can be resting on the ground to begin Mark the behaviour with your reward marker. What can go wrong- lol just watch the video to see what not to do. Have fun no matter how it works. Apologies for the barking background but as per usual someone else wanted their turn
15.01.2022 7 Tricks 7 Days Day 7- Touch Decide the type of touch nose or foot... Mark any touch with nose or foot on the touch object (hand or object) If you do too much too soon take a step back and practice something easy Remember that repetitions are important Take your time, if it really isn’t working either put everything away or go back to another activity that you do well and have some fun then try again when you are both feeling more confident. None of us get it right all the time

03.01.2022 7 Tricks 7 Days round 1 Day 6- Reward Marker Choose the marker, this could be a clicker or a word association... load the marker by marking the behaviour and giving a treat with no expectations of behaviour. test that you are properly loaded (21 repetitions depending on the dog) by using the marker and seeing if the dog looks for the treat use the reward marker to approve behaviours that you like. As the dog becomes more confident use the marker and reward randomly.
