24.01.2022 So important to socialise our dogs from a very young age and expose them to life and the ways of the world
23.01.2022 Since our little spill on Thursday, the poor sweet Libby has been confined to a yard and stable. Although it has only been a few days, I can already see it is impacting her and it got me thinking about how we expect horses to conform to our expectations... Horses must be allowed, to some degree to be a horse, to get dirty, to frolic with friends and to just be Each day since our spill, we take a little walk outside of Libby’s recuperation corner. I let her dictate where we wander (provided it is safe to do so for her injuries) so she can be a normal horse She gets to choose the grasses and plants she wants. Horses naturally select the vegetation they most need, I feel this is particularly important to aid in her recovery I have noticed Libby has been choosing lots of thistle heads She gets to wander, as she would naturally if she wasn’t cooped up A change of scene I instantly notice how Libby’s mood shifts after our little wanders This is so important for all horses, not just those who are injured. Do you ever notice your horse seems disinterest in their work after a couple of sessions in a row doing the same thing? Add in a little variation, a trail ride and let them be a horse By letting our horses be horses we promote mental and physical health, and don’t we ultimately all want our horses to be as happy and healthy as possible? How do you let your horse be a horse? I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend #animalosteo #horserider #horseriderfitness #fitness #health #stretch #flexibility #showhorselife #equine #equestrian #equestrianlife #showjumper #dressagehorse #dressagerider #horsecompetition #horseperformance #equestrianrider #equestrianworld #equestriansport #horsestrengthtraining #horsestretches #torquayosteo #osteopath #animalosteo #horseosteo #horserider #horseriderfitness #fitness #health #stretch #flexibility #showhorselife #equine #equestrian #equestrianlife #showjumper #dressagehorse #dressagerider #horsecompetition #horseperformance #equestrianrider #equestrianworld #equestriansport #torquayvictoria #torquaybusiness
23.01.2022 Does your horse lack that ‘swing’ through the hind end Does your horse feel stiff or one sided when you ride them Does your horse struggle with a particular canter lead... Does your horse buck when you ask them to canter Does your horse struggle to stand on one hind leg for the farrier If YES, they may be tight through the hind leg joints. Most horses experience some degree of tightness through the joints of the hind leg, particularly the hips Well lots.... 22.01.2022 Pole work, makes the dream work A large percentage of horses that I treat, have some degree of ‘poor engagement’ through the hind end. One of the exercises I often recommend to combat this is pole work ... Ground poles can be used in many different ways to achieve a desired result I ensure I incorporate at least one ground pole session a week with Libby (either lunging, ridden or both). I have seen huge changes in her movement and ‘posture’ since doing this The benefits of ground poles include Improves balance and coordination Decreases dragging hind legs Improves joint and joint flexibility Helps build top line Strengthens core muscles Corrects gait irregularities and poor rhythm (particularly when distances and height of poles are altered) Strengthens stabilising/intrinsic muscles (particularly through hind end) Aids with the resolution of muscular bracing (particularly through the neck) Supports straightness Heightens concentration Decreases one sided muscular weakness (aided through changing height of one side of pole) There are so many possible variations and patterns with ground poles (a topic which perhaps requires a whole other series of posts) and can be highly beneficial for all horses, regardless of discipline of level As with all exercise, ensure the horse is properly warmed up, working to a level it is comfortable with and wearing appropriate gear and in appropriate conditions to avoid the risk of injury
22.01.2022 Happy International Black Dog Day We rescued Floki as a four month old pup, and have never looked back He is the most loving, humorous and waggy young man
22.01.2022 % I love my clients (nearly as much as... 22.01.2022 A big part of my business revolves around communicating with clients via social media and my phone- I always place emphasis on the fact that they can contact me at any point in time with any questions or concerns. I take pride in this. But sometimes it is to the detriment of time with my own pups... After a weekend away in naturewith no phone signal or wifi, I realised how much uninterrupted time I had with my dogsBliss During this time, I observed how much more we communicated how much we connected I noticed more about their behaviour, movement and general well being. This got me thinking about how much time we spend with our animals but are ‘busy’ doing something else; Do we notice the little things (good or bad, which over time add up to the big things) Do we notice how (although not intentional) our apparent lack of interest in them impacts their well being Do we notice when they are happy Or sad Do we recognise when a sutble changes in their routine causes a ripple effect in their life (and ultimately behaviour) Do we notice that their body is moving differently How often do we spend time with them, for them and just be They, like any pack animal thrive off the connection with their pack, and if we, as their pack leader and companion , don’t give them our undivided attention and affection, even if just momentarily, how does this make them feel? What message are we sending out?
22.01.2022 Yes, Yes and Yes to this. As the saying goes, if you want a decent superfund and retirement, you must contribute to it for many many years before. The body of any animal is the same, be it human or canine, if you want a body that moves with little discomfort and as much ease as possible in the elder years, invest in it in the younger years. ... What are you doing today for your dogs future well being?
21.01.2022 Horses, just like us, go through phases of growth and development on an emotional (and physical level), often processing past experiences and traumas As their owners, we have to respect our horses individuality and give space for this growth... If we dont, we run the risk of hindering their progress and development, both physically and mentally Ask yourself, do I respect my horse as they are and give them understanding and appreciation? Because i know horses do that for us, day in, day out
21.01.2022 ’ , , , , , ’ - Jiddu Krishnamurti I love this... An osteos primary role is to listen, not only with our ears but all our senses To observe the delicate and intricate connections and movements of the body

20.01.2022 and mind ? The relationship between horse and rider is synergistic, meaning they must work together in order to achieve harmonious performance But what happens when our bodies are tight and restricted?... And our mind is distracted, and our energy in ‘overdrive’? ! If we are tight through our bodies, and stressed in our minds, are horses are too Hence, in order to ensure our horse performs to its potential, we must also take care of our bodies and minds #animalosteo #horseosteo #horserider #horseriderfitness #fitness #health #stretch #flexibility #routine #equine #equestrian #equestrianlife #showjumper #dressagehorse #dressagerider #horsecompetition #horseperformance #equestrianrider #equestrianworld #equestriansport #torquayvictoria #torquaybusiness #torquayosteo #osteopathyworks #happylife #showhorse #horsegirl #showhorselife #showjumpingrider
20.01.2022 : horses do not have a collar bone Horses, unlike humans are completely reliant on muscles to provide strength in the shoulder These muscles are known as the thoracic sling muscles. ... The thoracic sling muscles play a vital role in self carriage. When under contraction these muscles elevate the horses withers towards the croup. When the thoracic sling muscles are excessively tight or lack strength, horses can appear to be more on the forehand or down hill. Similarly, tightness through the thoracic sling directly impacts the flexibility of the rib cage and mid back, and thus the horses ability to bend, move on a circle, maintain balance and suppleness Horses may also become ‘girthy’ as a result of tight shoulder muscles By ensuring optimum movement and flexibility, as well as strength through the thoracic sling muscles, the horse is able to perform to their best ability, allowing freedom of expression of movement and ensuring the horse is able to engage properly and self carry. Animal osteopathy can support your horse to achieve this #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #horserider #showjumping #showhorse #horse #horsegirl #eqestrianperformcetherapy #horsewellness #horsemassage #ilovemyhorse #horsestretching #horseperformance #ridinghorse #equinetherapy #equinelove #horselife #equinesofinstagram #equinelife #equinelove #equinemedicine #equinebodywork #horseriding #equinebusiness #equestrianlife #equestrians #showjumping #dressage #eventinghorse #crosscountry #showpony

18.01.2022 Simple answer, no... Like humans, animals respond incredibly well to a ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach meaning they don’t have to be showing obvious signs of discomfort or lameness to benefit from osteopathic treatment Change in behaviour Reluctance to perform certain activities/movememts Decreased willingness to move forward Decreased propulsion Decreased suppleness Owner/riders gut feeling Feeling stiff under saddle Not feeling ’quite right’ under saddle Exercising regularly In competition Decreased competition performance Get to know know your horses normalso you know when they arent themselves and when to act Dont leave it until your horse is in pain and showing obvious signs to support their health and well being #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #equineosteopathy #horseosteopathy #osteopathyworks #horse #horsegirl #bayhorse #horsewellness #horsemassage #horsestretching #horseperformance #horsemovement #equinetherapy #equinephotographer #equinelove #equinesofinstagram #racehorse #horseracing #showjumping #showjumpinghorse #dressagehorse #dressagerider #horsecompetition #eventinghorse #horsemuscles #happyhorse #bebetter #health #healthylifestyle
17.01.2022 Dental health in dogs is so important. The act of chewing and gnawing (like with sticks and bones) helps clean the teeth and prevent tartar build up and decay.
17.01.2022 Being an animal osteopath is more than just a job! For me it is more than just helping animals feel more comfortable in their own bodies and perform better. It is my life and an enormous part of who I am The connection with the animal and owner, the trust, the privilege of hearing their story, the special, silent moments where an animal ‘let’s me in’ and shares their inner being! ... Those moments make my blood rush and feel alive As a horse and dog owner myself, I understand your animals importance and significance in your life. I understand that love and feel honoured to be part of your story!
17.01.2022 ’ , ’ -unknown I adore this quote ... It summarises the way (I feel) I practice as an animal osteopath and highlights the importance of listening to the language of the horse. Osteopathy for me is ALL about listening; to the body and the unspoken communication of the animal at hand in order to promote health, optimum movement and ultimately happiness. I believe we can all be better owners and riders if all we do is listen and observe with the love and respect every animal deserves How does your horse communicate with you? #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #horserider #showjumping #showhorse #horse #horsegirl #horsewellness #horsemassage #dressage #horsestretching #horseperformance #ridinghorse #equinetherapy #equinelove #fascia #bayhorse #tensionrelease #equinesofinstagram #equinelife #horsephysio #equestrian #equestrianlife #equestriansofinstagram #equestrianstyle #horsemuscles #musclerelease #chiro #fascia #fascialconnections #horsedentists
17.01.2022 I had the honour of seeing this handsome lad for his follow up today. ... Anyone else love a goofy-fluff as much as I do? His owner had asked me to take a look at him as he would occasionally yelp when running He is a very anxious boy who also suffers some skin and digestive problems When I originally assessed him, he was very tight through the hips, more so through one side, which I suspect he had strained a while back (hip flexor strains are extremely common in dogs) and to be the cause of his yelping Today, his lovely owner reported yelping since last session, improved over all movement, AND ... YAY When an animal experiences physical discomfort, it lowers their tolerance to environmental stressors, often making them anxious, to an extent that is can lead to skin and/or digestive issues (JUST LIKE US) I absolutely love (beyond words) that I can help decrease an animals pain and discomfort, but when there is also an improvement in their mental well being, which is so often the case, my little heart literally sings with joy Osteopathy is more than just treating sore backs, osteopathy supports the whole body and promotes well being and health #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #torquay #surfcoast #elbowdysplasia #goldenretriever #dogowner #doglove #dogmassage #flyball #happypuppy #geelongdogs #happydog #caninemassage #agilitytraining #caninerehab #dogwalker #doglover #dogmum #bestdog #caninetherapy #caninecompanions #canineathletes #caninefitness #caninehydrotherapy #caninephysio #caninelove #doglovers #dogtrainers #dogsitting

16.01.2022 Another pole slow mo, because I am just so proud of this little lady Does your horse: Drag their hind feet Often trip and stumble ... Struggle to develop top line Struggle with natural self carriage If you answered yes, like I did when I first started working with Libby, incorporate (more) pole work Libby has gone from stumbling lots, particularly under saddle, had poor core tone and struggled to develop top line. Now, only being worked very lightly, she is shaping up and improving in all areas Happy weekend everyone

14.01.2022 I treat so many horses with ear, poll, jaw and hyoid problems (often as a result of pulling back against a bridle or head collar) This is a great exercise to ensure this doesn’t happen to your horse
14.01.2022 How long does healing take First off, let me start by saying, the body is amazing at healing itself Particularly if given the time and care to heal. Osteopathy helps facilitate healthier healing, resulting in smaller risk of reinjury, chronic pain and dysfunction. ... The time required for healing is a conversation I often find myself having with clients. In a time when we have everything at our fingertips within an instant, a time when everyone seems to be rushing, and a time when it is so easy to reach for pain medication and the quick fix, we rarely allow adequate time for healing to occur. Particularly when surgery and other alternatives exist. It is so important that we recognise that healing TAKES TIME! read that again Healing takes time The length of time required for healing is dependant upon: - The individual - Age - Extent of Injury - Overall health Where the injury has occurred also plays a huge part. Muscle - 3 days- 6 months Bone- 5 -12 weeks Tendon - 3 weeks - >1 year Ligament - 4 days - > 1 year (but some don’t always completely heal) Within this healing time frame, it is important to support the body in every way we can, allow rest, light exercise to promote blood flow(where appropriate), healthy diet and pain relief as appropriate. In some cases, where healing cannot properly occur, surgical intervention may be required. If you are concerned, I highly recommend reaching out for support. Sometimes all we need is the reassurance that things will get better Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about your animals healing
13.01.2022 I talked about this gorgeous lady a few weeks back, isnt she just a smooch?... Although her ’problem areas’ are predominately in her front end, working with the hind end is just as important to support overall health and comfort of movement In the video i am working through the major joints and muscles of the hind end to keep her moving as best as possible and as comfortable as possible I see her every 5 or so weeks to maintain all the work we have done thus far, and every session is a delight As you can see, she is the best, most appreciative patient #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #torquay #surfcoast #elbowdysplasia #dogowner #doglove #dogmassage #flyball #happypuppy #geelongdogs #happydog #caninemassage #agilitytraining #caninerehab #dogwalker #doglover #dogmum #bestdog #caninetherapy #caninecompanions #canineathletes #caninefitness #caninehydrotherapy #caninephysio #caninelove #doglovers #doggo #dogtrainers #dogsitting
12.01.2022 Some snippets of this handsome lads treatment It has been a very very busy day, filled with some truly wonderful souls... Unfortunately it didn’t end as smoothly with Libby and I taking a tumble on our last circle of the session which resulted in Libby face planting and very badly cutting both of her knees (I never want to stick my fingers in her knee again to stop the blood gushing Thankfully she is all bandaged up and cosy now( thanks to Stuart from @golden_plains_equine) but it will be a long healing process and a while until we can get back in the saddle. Sending love to you all
12.01.2022 ’ ’ Lately I have been seeing an increase in dogs diagnosed with ‘slipped’ or herniated discs Firstly, ? ... The spinal column is made up of individual spinal bones through which the spinal cord and nerve runs. In between these bones are the intervertebral discs (pic 2) The disc is made up of a fibrous outer ring (annulus fibrosus) and jelly like centre (nucleus- pic 3) On occasion this jelly like centre can be squeezed out of the fibrous ring (think like a jam ) into the surrounding space and sometimes comes into contact with the neighbouring nerves. Mostly, this jelly like centre is naturally cleared out by the body without much of a problem However, this can also cause localised pain around the disc, and more diffusely (particularly if considerable pressure is being applied to the nerve) This, in rare cases, can lead to bowel and bladder problems such as incontinence, muscular weakness and even less often, paralysis Disc problems can only be diagnosed with certainty through imaging such as an MRI and CT scan NB- I cannot stress this enough- just because a disc problem shows up on your dogs scan, doesn’t necessarily mean it is the problem A scan cannot give an accurate representation of how long that disc problem has been there- disc problems can occur WITHOUT AND SYMPTOMS!!! I know this all sounds very scary, so ? On many occasions, a disc problem will resolve on its own, particularly if supported with rehab, manual therapy and medication From my experience, most disc problems can be resolved without the need for surgical intervention and the dog continues on to live a normal, happy life In saying this, I always recommend talking to your vet and seeking expert advise if you are concerned. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #dog #doghealth #bordercollie #discdisease #herniateddisc #slippeddisc #lowbackpain #doglowbackpain #rehab #doglife #dogrehabilitation #performancedogs #agilitytraining #flyball #showdog

Preparing and allowing gradual return to exercise is paramount to decreasing the risk of injury ... 10.01.2022 .... ? The vertebral column is a very important structure as it protects the spinal cord and nerve supply to the whole body The spinal column is made up of individual segments, of which there are roughly 54 in horses, which articulate together allowing the spine to be strong, yet mobile (so important)... When one vertebral joint is tight and restricted, which can happen quite often and easily, another vertebra, or group of vertebrae will have to compensate and work harder This can lead to discomfort and pain Imagine that time you couldnt turn your neck to one side, its like that Reactive to local touch Localised muscle spasm Localised change in coat condition Change in behaviour Bucking/rearing Girthy/doesnt like having saddle put on Dislikes being rugged Uneven under saddle Difficulty working on one rein If you think this may be your horse, please get in touch Osteopaths are trained and highly skilled at assessing and treating each individual spinal segment (and every other joint in the body) #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #equineosteopathy #horseosteopathy #osteopathyworks #horse #horsegirl #bayhorse #horsewellness #horsemassage #horsestretching #horseperformance #horsemovement #equinetherapy #equinephotographer #equinelove #equinesofinstagram #racehorse #horseracing #showjumping #showjumpinghorse #dressagehorse #dressagerider #horsecompetition #eventinghorse #horsemuscles #happyhorse #bebetter #health #healthylifestyle
10.01.2022 THE BENEFITS OF GROUND POLES Ground poles are a simple, highly versatile and a beneficial exercise for every horse And an exercise I often recommend to clients I often find horses are weaker through the smaller muscles which provide stability and balance. 08.01.2022 Keeping your body strong helps your horse perform at its best One of the comments I get when I treat peoples horses, particularly lifting their hind legs, is how strong I must be While I take this as a massive compliment, ... I know how much work has gone in behind the scenes to get me to that point. I treat many horses every week and have done for years, I walk the dogs and endeavour to weight train as often as I can (used to be 5-6x week, now just whenever I can fit it in ) Keeping my body strong makes everyday tasks easier Without all the little things I do to keep my body functioning at it’s best, I wouldn’t be able to support others and their animals achieve the same and perform to their best The same is said for riding; if we don’t look after our bodies, keep them strong and supple, how do we expect our horses to do their best with us on top Horses are our mirror image What are you doing to keep your body strong and supple

Simply put, ( pic 2)) This comes down to the horse being able to Increase joint range of motion Lengthen stride Lighten the forehand Engage easier through hind end Elongate and lift through the back Track up properly Always trust your gut as a rider/handler/owner, and if in doubt, get your horse checked out Happy Horse Training #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #horserider #showjumping #showhorse #horse #horsegirl #horsewellness #horsemassage #dressage #horsestretching #horseperformance #ridinghorse #equinetherapy #equinephotographer #equinelove #equinemedicine #bayhorse #equinephotography #equinesofinstagram #equinelife #horsephysio #equestrian #equestrianlife #equestriansofinstagram #equestrianstyle #chiro #racehorse #horseracing

05.01.2022 ( ) This is one of the principles of osteopathy and governs the way an osteopath treats. Thus, when the mum of this gorgeous girl asked me to treat her, indicating she thought the poor pup may have problems in her hips, naturally I looked at the rest of her body too... Sure enough, this little lady was tight through the hips, but was also tight through the shoulders as a result of compensation and connection This principle is so important when figuring out why a problem is occurring and why an animal may be in discomfort. The problem may be coming from else where in the body than that which is symptomatic, thus it is so important to treat the whole body and consider all aspects of an animals life #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #torquay #surfcoast #elbowdysplasia #dogowner #doglove #dogmassage #flyball #happypuppy #geelongdogs #happydog #caninemassage #agilitytraining #caninerehab #dogwalker #doglover #dogmum #bestdog #caninetherapy #caninecompanions #canineathletes #caninefitness #caninehydrotherapy #caninephysio #caninelove #doglovers #dogtrainers #dogsitting #bordercollie

02.01.2022 In my experience, quick fixes are very rare in the world of manual therapy and body work During a consultation with a client, I always try my utmost to outline how long the recovery process is expected to take and why. This is important because I feel so many people expect miracles to happen overnight after just one session... - But there are so many factors that influence a horses performance and their body and require more than just one session to address with the time they deserve The body of every animal adapts and compensates to both internal and external stimuli and takes time to reverse and unravel Factors that influence your horse’s body and their performance: - Their environment - Their diet - Their emotions - Their prior experiences (of being handled) - Their rider and rider’s body - Their exercise routine - Their tack, feet and teeth - Their handler and rider’s emotions So next time someone treats your horse and tells you it will take longer than just one session, remember all these factors
02.01.2022 , I loose track of how many times i get asked this question, and in short there is no one simple answer (particularly as each practitioner within a profession works a little differently and often blurs the lines) However, it goes a little something like this ... are widely recognised for using rehabilitation and education as their primary mode of treament Some hands on release is used, however from my experience this varies generally work with the spine and nervous system and use adjustment (joint cracking) techniques Some chiros will encorporate massage prior to the adjustment are often a combination of both, using rehabilitation and joint adjustments but also massage, dry needling and very gentle and non invasive techniques such as cranial osteopathy. This allows for a thorough approach to treatment but also ensures it can be tailored to the specific needs of the animal. I know many animals that dont respond to strong joint movement and massage, but get the greatest benefit from light cranial osteopathy (and vice versa) Osteopaths view the body as a whole, whereby all elements are taken into consideration including joints, muscles, connective tissue, nerves, blood and lymph flow but also external factors, emotional state and well being I find most people chose a therapist for their animal based on what got results for they themselves I think this is a really valid way, but remember, animals respond slightly differently to humans so dont be afraid to ask questions to ensure the best theraputic fit for your beloved four legged friend #osteopathy #animalosteopathy #horserider #showjumping #showhorse #horse #horsegirl #horsewellness #horsemassage #dressage #horsestretching #horseperformance #ridinghorse #equinetherapy #ch#equinephotographer #equinelove #equinemedicine #bayhorse #equinephotography #equinesofinstagram #equinelife #horsephysio #equestrian #equestrianlife #equestriansofinstagram #equestrianstyle #horsemuscles #horsefood #chiro
