20.01.2022 We have to be really careful not to fall into the trap of assuming we’ll be happy when we reach a certain milestone. The truth is, we don’t know if achieving... a thing will make us happy. It might help us feel certain things and it might help us avoid feeling other things but external achievements rarely make anyone happy. We can fall in love with a fantasy of the thing that’s going to make us happyand that can distract us from doing the little things we need to do every day to improve our quality of life. Real progress tends to be made in the baby steps not the dramatic shifts. Most of the real progress I’ve EVER made has been in two minute increments. No exaggeration. I want you thinking tiny, incremental improvements in quality of life. Tiny ways to reduce stress. Tiny ways to feel good about you. Tiny ways to meaningfully connect. If we take care of the baby steps, the big shifts will take care of themselves. Glaciers move inches per year and reshape continents over time.

15.01.2022 Working on getting my brain on board once you feed it a little ‘fluff’... it just keeps seeking more! How’s everyone else’s 2021 looking? 12.01.2022 Usain Bolt has a coach Federer has a coach Williams has a coach But it’s ok 45yo Sandra, with three kids who have 7 extracurricular activities, a labradoodle an...d a fulltime job, I completely understand why you feel frustrated at why you can’t do it on your own.. I hear it all the time, people say things like I don’t know why I can’t get my shit together! Or why can’t I just do this?... The best in the world, who do nothing but eat, train and sleep have coaches because they appreciate the value they bring. They recognise it’s easier and wiser to have a coach. But you think you should be able to flick a switch and just do it? With no help? With everything else you have going on in your life? Getting help doesn’t suggest you’re incapable, it suggests you’re wise enough to make the process easier with better dividends.

09.01.2022 In times where there is chaos outside; look within. Whilst we are going through another extended #lockdown here in Melbourne, there are many mixed emotions and ...reactions. I encourage you to use this time to connect more deeply with yourself ~ with your feelings, your thoughts, your body. Stay in a state of observation rather than reactivity. Breathe deeply and allow the different sensations within you to pass and flow. Not attaching but finding a peaceful space of observing and allowing. It’s all possible even when external circumstances might not seem conducive. Looking after your inner landscape is what you can do to stay anchored. Re-connect to the wisdom of your body, find clarity & freedom within. #reconnect #gowithin #lockdownmelbourne #findingsanctuary

07.01.2022 Your eating does not have to be perfect for you to be healthier. So many people give up - or just don’t start because they believe that they will fail if they ...don’t eat ‘perfectly’. Perfect does not exist. Let’s say it again. Perfect does not exist. So start today with just one change. If you’re just starting out, can you reduce the amount of sugar you have in your tea by even half a teaspoon? And then another half? Can you eat eggs instead of cereal for brekkie today? Then again in a few days time? Can you drink more water? Can you replace 1 glass of juice with water? Can you skip just one meal (or day) without bread/rice/pasta/pap? How do you feel that day? Life is about progress and growth.... not perfection. We’re all learning and growing. The work we do in the communities through Eat Better South Africa is the place where we see this growth with people supporting and encouraging each other. In our Nutrition Network training programs, we follow and grow with the science. Our Healthcare Providers and Nutrition Advisors are trained to support people through education and through coaching to make better life choices. Don’t aim for perfection. Aim for growth. Aim for progress. Many times progress occurs beneath the surface. I see you there, trying! Keep going! You can do it! Correction: You ARE doing it!

06.01.2022 Tips to get the school year off to a better start: Have realistic expectations. Go to bed early (parent). You need enough rest. Switch off tech and go to sleep...... in a dark cool room! Wake up early (parent)... start with an hour earlier than you usually do. This one is a game changer for those who work from home! You can wash and dress, pray, meditate, prep brekkie, workout and start working BEFORE everyone’s awake! That alone time is a MUST HAVE! MAKE YOUR BED!! Just do it! And teach your kids to make theirs too. Doesn’t have to be perfect, just accomplished. Always make yourself a priority. Look after your body, your skin. Drink enough water. Shower. Wash your hair. Try to dress for your body type even if your are working from home. Be comfortable AND stylish if you wish. Make up or no makeup, dye your hair or just embrace the grey. Whatever you do, be real, be a priority. Taking some time to feel good about you can give you that little bounce in your step that you need. Keep a gratitude journal. A daily practice of gratitude helps to build the muscle of appreciation. When things suck, we are able to view them with a more neutral perspective and realise that we have been blessed way more than our sorrows, worries and fears. Have a clear-ish plan of what you need to achieve the next day and have it all ready and laid out. Again- have realistic expectations. Similarly having clothes laid out, food etc can really help you kickstart the day. Set daily goals- realistic ones- and tick them off. Boundaries: this one is a big one. Know your boundaries. Believe in yourself enough to respect that we all have boundaries. It governs the way we live our lives. When you know this, you will know that it is part of your life’s work to speak up for yourself AND because you know that this is your birth right and cannot be taken away from you, you can do this calmly and respectfully. If you do this, it will be clear who and what to prioritize in your life and who/what you can stop wasting precious mental energy ruminating over. Be accountable to yourself and ultimately, your Higher Power. Set boundaries with social media, whatsapp etc. They can detract from other wise valuable work time. When you’re working, turn your phone over. You DON’T have to respond to every single message immediately. Prioritize your work. Figure out what puts you in a better frame of mind and stick to that. Figure out what saps your energy and release that. I realised that reading books or keeping in mind a mindfulness inducing phrase or prayer energizes me. Watching Netflix before bed or scrolling through Facebook hoping I won’t see a Doom and Gloom post about someone I know, SAPS MY ENERGY! So I am trying to scroll less and have stopped watching Netflix. I now opt for books or sleep at bedtime. Mindset is HUGE so truly figure out what gets you in the most productive state of mind and keep doing it. You can get your friends or family on board in a private whatsapp group to keep morale up. Organise your life/space one drawer at a time so you don’t spend precious time in a muddle searching. Batch cook and freeze or save for tomorrow’s dinner! This saves cooking time atleast every second day. Speed clean and get your family in on the act! Fun and quick. Communicate with your kids and have them set goals and keep gratitude journals. They (your kids) can be lovely little reminders when you’re losing the plot. True story Allocate age appropriate tasks to your kids. Let them know your morning expectations. Listen to your kids. Be flexible. If they’re telling you that they’re struggling, listen. Sometimes all someone needs- young or old- is to say ‘I feel ‘XYZ’’ and to have a loving empathetic person hear this. I sometimes ask ‘ Do you need help or do you need to rant?’ For someone like me who is solution based and thrives on seeing the path, (which can frustrate those who just need to vent- oops sorry Hubby) it can be difficult to hold space for my loved ones. Asking this with genuine love can make a difference. Prioritize TIME with your loved ones. Play, even hide and seek for 5 minutes. Talk, about serious things and light things. Talk instead of ‘Netflix and chill’. Watch the stars. Connect. And then some days maybe you just need to Netflix and chill? Just be careful of falling into habits that take from you instead of energizing you. Night time routine: stick to this because the night before really sets the stage for the following day. Clean and pack way so you start with a fresh slate the next day. Do whatever makes you feel energized. We (hubby) load the dishwasher and empties it in the morning, wipe down, kids pack away their things, I vacuum/wipe floors... (only the most used areas get daily cleaning) and lay out morning cups and vitamins. All those tiny time stealers. Don’t forget to get some sunshine. Get small siestas of you can. Get some rest. Express your gratitude as many times a day as you can. Last tip: STOP eating 3 hours before bedtime. This allows the GUT clock to plan for great deep sleep. Try to delay your first meal if you can to give you a feeding window of 8-10 hours. So if you’re not eating at your best, this is one way to try to limit the damage and improve insulin sensitivity.

01.01.2022 Some challenges and how I’m overcoming them. Challenge 1: Water My daily struggle to remember to drink enough. When I do manage to drink enough, I feel fab an...d my skin looks so much better. Solution: Knock it first thing in the morning. I start with a huge mug (400ml) and the juice of half a lemon then repeat. Somehow this victory makes me want to keep up the good work and I find myself drinking consistently throughout the day. Water, infused water, herbal tea. The skin of the lemon has bioflavonoids and other nutrients so I throw the rind into a teapot, throw in some boiling hot water and the kids drink this first thing and I drink up the rest throughout the day. Challenge 2: Exercise I love group workouts. The spirit and motivation to do your best really helps me push. Then came COVID, schools closed, gyms closed, workload peaked, routine changed and I like many of us was exhausted. I kept some of my exercise up... push-ups, resistance squats, pull ups and swimming but I needed the dedicated me time and the meditative effect of a solitary workout. I followed the Facebook pages of fitness people admire... Ben Greenfield Fitness , Dr. Gabrielle Lyon even Mel Robbinswho shared her daily exercise routine and plans to get up and get moving. I know myself... I do my best when I’m moving my body and feeling strong, hard but flexible. Then one day I just decided to do it and I started. No special gym clothes.... no special time. I just started. My favourite right now Movement Parallels Life Day 1 was tough, day 2 ugh.... why??? Day 3 and I was feeling it. Now I’ve established a routine again. Every morning at 5am, I wake up, shower, pray, then hit the workout. It’s short (20-30 minutes) but hard and works for me. For the rest of the day I’ll drop and do 10 push-ups whenever I remember (the trick is to not be too fussy. Do it anywhere. Kitchen, outside, bedroom, office, living room. If you think it, do it. Don’t stop to second guess. Other things I’ll do is to try to learn a new skill (right now it’s handstand and my daughters loves teaching me). It’s not perfect but I’m back to feeling like me again. Challenge 3: Eating too much dark chocolate When the home school stress levels got too high, I found myself reaching for dark chocolate.... mid clenched jaw and every single time that happened, I thought of @Dr Laurie Rauch’s paper on stress, cortisol levels and binge eating. I knew it was the sugar (even though it was so little) that I was reaching for - yet I told myself it was for the magnesium alone... Ha! On our home, we eat 85% dark chocolate. Easily. We love it. ALL of us. We were going through it much too quickly. The fix? Swap out the 85% for 95%.... problem solved!! I was eating too much because it was sweet. 95% is a lot less sweet and the chances of overeating this is reduced. Chocolate reserves restored. Please share- how have you overcome your stuck moments?

01.01.2022 I remember when my Dad was diagnosed with diabetes Type 2, I watched the emotional roll coaster he went on. The changes he had to make and particularly the fi...nger pricking and injections he would have to give himself. At the time I was a teenager and I could think of nothing worse than to have to live life like that... and I said to myself if I ever get that, I’ll just end my life. That thought still echoed in my mind when I was pregnant with my first baby and developed gestational diabetes. The thoughts of the rebellious teen came back to me... but no my life was no longer my own, so I couldn’t do that. When I got the diagnosis the first thing I did was cry for about two days straight. After I picked myself of the floor I started down the road of learning as much as I could about diabetes as a whole and GD. In my mind, I had to figure out what was going on, why it was happening and how to fix it. It was the start of my journey into food marketing, food science and difference between the allopathic world and natural medicine. The allopathic world told me GD might resolve after birth, for a time but was likely to turn into diabetes over time, and diabetes type 2 is ongoing and progressive disease. Where on the other hand, natural medicine offered me management tools, root cause, and the chance of remission. This was my start in the field of natural medicine ... a rebellious young women who refused to believe there was no hope. Today... I’m not the women that works with patients to create the best outcomes possible and supporting to hit their goals. However prevention is always better place to be... and that is why the Future Wellness Group has been building an application for predictive data around diabetes. I have 10 places to fill in my beta testing phase, where I will run your data through the application at no cost and take you through the results. Should it come back with a strong likelihood then I can help you begin the journey of prevention or remission. If you would like one of these spots, please send me a DM
