19.01.2022 By now, the words infection and transmission should come with an associated memory of preventative actions such as staying at home, wash your hands regularly, stay away from others if you are sick and report any infection-like symptoms to your healthcare professional. We have all increased our levels of general hygiene, but there still may be some areas we are all neglecting. Touch screens and the carry about cases of our phones would probably be the most frequently handled i...tems that we own. Particularly now as we move into this social distancing era, keeping contact online, on the phone, and in messages has become an essential activity. A number of recent studies conducted over the past few years have identified a whole microbiome that exists just on the surface of our beloved phones, as we are more likely to regularly clean our toilet seats than we are to clean our phones [1-3]. This microbiome includes a host of microbes such as germs, bacteria, fungus, and viruses. How often are you cleaning and more importantly, disinfecting your phone? Although most of these microbes can be considered harmless, it is important to note that the more concerning germs have the potential to live on high touch surfaces long enough to be transmitted to you, particularly if this item is touching your face. How do we make our phones and touch screens safe We assume you are washing your hands regularly as a part of the new world standard, in the case of our phones and touchscreens, this should now become a part of the routine. Firstly, consult with the manufacturer of your device or case for their specific instructions, this may be on their website. Many have provided updated information in light of the current circumstances. Generally, unplug the item from any power source and cables, do not use liquids and avoid moisture near any exposed openings, avoid aerosol sprays, bleaches, and abrasives. DO NOT spray any cleaner directly on the device. The best course of action is to spray a high-quality disinfectant lightly on a lint-free cloth and buff over surfaces, whipping again with a clean cloth in 5-10 minutes to remove residue and ensure the product has had enough time to disinfect accordingly. How often Depends on how diligent you are with your handwashing, if you are vigilant then maybe less often, and on a daily basis.
