10.01.2022 ILLEGAL CACTI SEIZED These cacti might look cute but they are restricted species - and more than 70 were seized from a Bundaberg home after a WA resident saw... them for sale online and alerted Biosecurity Queensland. The plants, including the coral cactus, white ghost cactus, jumping cholla and bunny ears, can spread rapidly through waste and waterways and infest farmland and native bush, injuring wildlife and livestock with their sharp spikes. Bundaberg Regional Council officers helped track down the person responsible and removed the plants, worth thousands of dollars. The woman selling the plants was unaware they were illegal and has surrendered them, meaning she will not be penalised - but councillor Wayne Honor says anyone knowingly keeping these species can be fined thousands. He says a huge risk to the region’s agricultural economy has been eliminated. Cactus lovers are being urged to stay on the lookout and be careful what you buy. For a full list of restricted plants in Queensland, visit www.business.qld.gov.au//weeds-/invasive-plants/restricted.

09.01.2022 Alligator Creek & District Lions will be at this event. We are being assisted by the awesome team from our parent club - Townsville Castle Hill Lions We will have a sausage sizzle, Lions Christmas Cakes will be on Sale as well as information on Lions. We will be doing a membership drive over the coming 12 months with the aim of growing our club for the benefit of the local community.

09.01.2022 In Guayanilla, a municipality of Puerto Rico, thousands of people are displaced because their homes are no longer safe. Lions are already hard at work addressing both short- and long-term needs. Your donation, no matter the amount, will help those in need. https://bit.ly/2QMqaIF

02.01.2022 Thank you to all who placed donations in this box last weekend for the Bush Fire Appeal at our Bunnings sausage sizzle at Bunnings Fairfield. $178 was collected. #bushfireappeal

02.01.2022 There has been much publicity about the donations for the bush fires, made to the Red Cross and other charities, not being disbursed but retained by them for so...me mythical future catastrophe like floods or cyclones. This has adversely affected other organisations such as the Lions Clubs. Disclosure - I am the Secretary of the Endeavour Lions Club in Cooktown. Because of doubts and concerns expressed by some donors to the bush fire appeals I have followed up these concerns. All moneys donated for the bush fire appeals to any Lions Club, including ours, are transmitted to the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF), the body which disburses these funds. The ALF has six directors all of whom are volunteers and receive no payments for their service. The ALF does not deduct any administration costs and 100% of donations are disbursed to those in need. This distribution is channeled through Lions Districts or Lions Clubs in the areas affected. To date the Endeavour Lions Club, thanks to the generosity of our supporters in Cooktown, has ear marked $4,000 for the appeal. A further $1,000 will be donated to the Hartley Creek organisation for the care of animals injured in the fires. In addition, as was reported in the Local News, we have also received in excess of $3,400 from the raffle and BBQ held at Cooktown Hardware on Saturday. Thank you, firies and Cooktown. On Sunday the 26th, Australia Day, the Cooktown RSL Memorial Club and the Top Pub will be holding a day out and all the net proceeds from both will be directed to the Endeavour Lions Club. So early next week these moneys will be sent to the ALF for disbursement to our friends in the south who are most in need. What can I say. The generosity of the people of Cooktown is beyond belief. Thank you. Thank you. Why would you want to live anywhere else. Bob Norris.

01.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Foundation supporting those affected by the bushfires. Since the bushfire period commenced, the Foundation has all...ocated to areas impacted nearly $600,000. This has allowed Lions on the ground to support those areas in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia by providing food, water, clothing, essential household needs, whitegoods, replacement water tanks and other items. Every areas need is different and Lions are able to make that support happen. More help will be needed and your donations will allow the Foundation to provide further assistance for immediate needs and then be able to help in the longer term recovery of those communities.
