25.01.2022 If you want a chilled dog (and you should prioritise their mental wellbeing) it is important to socialise new family members to what there life is likely to involve: https://drsophiayin.com//20/12/Socialization_Checklist.pdf Remember always consider whether adoption is a better route for your lifestyle than buying a puppy, if you wish to buy a puppy based on your lifestyle, please reach out to reputable breeders via kennel clubs, a good breeder basically will interview you ...and is likely to have a wait list. They will not sell to pet shops or advertise on gum trees. Do your research on avoiding puppy farms. Also check out our adoption guide under useful links via our website.

23.01.2022 Puppy farms are a very real and serious issue Well done Emma Hurst - Animal Justice Party MP for being a strong voice and the ongoing efforts of Oscars Law This video may be hard to watch but imagine what it is like for the dogs that have to live and breed there on repeat. ... We have seen an influx of puppies in poor health recently with multiple gut infections from the conditions that they have been born into, their lifetime risk of disease is strongly suggested to be higher when looking at the scientific literature around the nutrition of the mother during her pregnancy. Many of our pet gaurdian families were conned into thinking it wasnt a puppy farm, the breeder met us half way on the road as they are far from sydney is the classic risk factor. It is a myth that rescue dogs have ongoing emotional issues and unable to be rehabilitated. Socialising a puppy and getting them through their first 12 months without illness or injury can take up a lot more time and financial resources than rehabilitating a rescue dog. We encourage people to consider at least speaking to some rescue groups before buying a puppy so you can explore some options. We also LOVE LOVE LOVE doing pre-selection consultations to determine the best fit for your family before committing so do not hesitate to book one with Dr Tina for $155- for 30 minutes and a written report.
23.01.2022 A huge thank you for all our wonderful families for entrusting their loved ones to our care this year, especially your patience and understanding during our covid protocols and with our phones ringing out! A huge thank you to our team for their energy and drive May you all have a great festive period, albeit, perhaps different from other years.... In 2021 and beyond, may you all be safe, happy, healthy and able to live your lives with ease.
22.01.2022 Happy International Dog Day 2020 A huge thankyou to all the wonderful dogs in our lives, and the humans who entrust them to our care. Love from the ANVC Team
22.01.2022 Hot off the press. The gut plays a role in so many systemic diseases and finally modern veterinary medicine is starting to validate the naturopathic principle, all disease starts in the gut, originally proclaimed by Hippocrates of "Let Food Be Thy Medicine" fame. Happy National Science Week :)

21.01.2022 Confused about what to feed your pet? It is important to understand if your vet is making recommendations based on industry-funded research
21.01.2022 If you are feeding a low carb wholefood diet and your vet tells you you need to add grain to avoid heart disease, show them this paper, the issue appears to be grain free kibble which replaces grains with legumes https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-94464-2
21.01.2022 Dr Matthew has recently done a podcast on our Integrative Approach and the gut-brain axis here, there is also some great behaviour podcasts to listen to :)
21.01.2022 As Ian from Bondi Behaviorist so rightly pointed out on their Youtube channel, it is a great opportunity to bond with your pet while you are at home. It is important however to think about preparing your pet for return to previous routines. Some great information here and please call if concerned, we love to help when it comes to enhancing pets mental wellbeing, and much prefer to address concerns upstream or intervene early if behaviour challenges are emerging. Please comment and share if you think this could help others.
21.01.2022 IF YOU ARE FEEDING A GRAIN-BASED PET FOOD (OR ANY DRY FOOD) ADD IN APIACEOUS VEGETABLES RIGHT NOW! Pet food companies from all around the globe are struggling ...to control mold levels in dry and canned pet food with dozens and dozens of lawsuits developing over pet deaths. Pets that eat food containing unsafe levels of aflatoxins can develop aflatoxin poisoning. Pets are highly susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning because, unlike people, who eat a varied diet, pets generally eat the same food (& brand) continuously over extended periods of time. Eliminating alfaxtoxins from your dog’s body can be really difficult. As of Aug 9th, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of more than 130 pet deaths and more than 220 pet illnesses this year that may be linked to pets eating brands of pet food tainted with this mold, and in the UK, 335 cats have died of a mysterious food-related toxin, with higher levels of mycotoxins found in some samples of the recalled cat food. According to the FDA - Aflatoxins are invisible, odorless toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus that can grow on pet food ingredients such as corn, peanuts, and other grains. Aflatoxins can cause illness (aflatoxicosis), liver damage, and death in pets. Pets exposed to non-lethal doses of aflatoxin may survive, but can have long-term health problems, such as organ damage. So, how do you try and bulletproof your pet from consuming potential low levels of aflatoxins found in their pet food? Here’s where "science" steps in! Eliminating alfaxtoxins from your dog’s body can be really difficult but serving up Apiaceous veggies is a great way to enhance the elimination of these toxic compounds! While consuming high concentrations of aflatoxins may be irreversible, the effects of your pet ingesting small doses over time that is associated with dry and canned pet foods can and should be counteracted. Studies show adding apiaceous vegetables such as carrots, cilantro, celery, dill, fennel, parsnips, or parsley in the diet counteracts the carcinogenic effects of aflatoxins. These vegetables contain flavonoids and phytochemicals which have been found to inhibit the activity of cytochrome P- 450 1A2, an enzyme responsible for the transformation of carcinogenic intermediates to carcinogens and the activation of aflatoxin B1 following consumption. This one easy food hack to help increase the health span of your dog! In our new book The Forever Dog we go over a ton more food hacks for other unwanted tagalongs found in pet food, including Round-up and heavy metals. These important food adds that will not only improve your dog’s health but may also help increase their life span! Available now at foreverdog.com/about

17.01.2022 There is more to the story than just absence of grain being the problem
17.01.2022 Leptospirosis update 10-06-2021 Attention dog owners Leptospirosis case from Erskineville! On Friday a dog from Erskineville was admitted to hospital at... the UVTHS. A diagnosis of leptospirosis has now been confirmed in this dog. We are still trying to determine which is the causative serovar in this case. We have received a lot of enquiries regarding new vaccination recommendations after the recent case of leptospirosis in a dog from the Northern Beaches. We do not currently know if the mice plague affecting NSW is involved in the increasing number of canine leptospirosis cases, nor how many mice are in fact infected. We are currently investigating this. To date, the majority of cases have resided in the Inner City and Inner West areas of Sydney so we recommend routine vaccination for dogs living in or frequenting these regions. Isolated cases have now been identified in the Lower (Crows Nest) and Upper (Cheltenham) North Shore, Mid North Coast (Firefly), Greater Western Sydney (Horsley Park), Figtree near Wollongong and the Northern Beaches (Elanora Heights). Therefore, veterinarians need to assess the risk of infection in dogs outside of the Inner City and Inner West such as the dog’s love of swimming or puddles, interest in ratting, contact with rats and the extent to which the dog travels with the owner to known sites of disease. We recommend that dog owners discuss the pros and cons of vaccination with their veterinarian. Leptospirosis has a very high fatality rate which needs to be taken into consideration. The risk of side effects from vaccination are much lower than the risk of dying from leptospirosis with the current serovars circulating. The vaccine needs to be given twice, 2-4 weeks apart and yearly thereafter. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause acute kidney failure and liver disease in dogs. Dogs become infected by contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Prevention of leptospirosis is achieved by limiting contact to sources of infection and vaccination. Until recently clinical leptospirosis has only rarely been reported in Sydney and therefore, historically, dogs have not been routinely vaccinated against this disease. Clinical signs can initially be very vague such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Importantly, leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means that humans can become infected as well, for example through contact with rat urine or urine of infected dogs, through skin wounds or through the mucus membranes (eg in the mouth).
16.01.2022 There has been another case of Leptospirosis. At this stage we are following the UVTHS advice below (post below) At this stage the only pets we would be hesitant to vaccinate in these areas are very old pets, pets with cancer or autoimmune disease, in which case a risk:benefit analysis consultation is recommended if concerned, otherwise all other pets, including pets with allergies (except known allergy/adverse reaction to the C2i vaccine) who live in areas affected should ...come forward for vaccine. We are discuss nutritional support for after the vaccine (spirulina, herbs, probiotics) Please call our nurses/technicians to discuss further. We take an ultra-conservative approach to vaccines but this situation is escalating. If you pet is off colour please either call us or take to emergency vet and ask the question, could this be Leptospirosis?
16.01.2022 Storms and fireworks are more likely to occur over the summer. 14.01.2022 Great article discussing why at All Natural Vet Care we gravitate towards low carbohydrate, lower glycemic index diets in general. While this article is a discussion about cancer care, there is several great insights into how carbohydrates drive metabolic chronic inflammation which is something we want to address to optimise health, wellness and vitality
14.01.2022 Happy National Science Week We practice evidence-informed Integrative Medicine and are working on collaborating with researchers to expand the evidence base of natural compounds for pets. Here is a taste of some exciting research (note that this pilot study was done in 2012 and this is still not mainstream). It is important to note that research is expensive, slow to conduct, often self-funded (as research for non-patent-able medications is unlikely to be backed by R and D funders especially if using traditional medicines).
14.01.2022 Does your dog eat any fresh veggies? It can lower the risk of certain cancers, and is increasingly recognized to shift the gut-microbiota (those friendly guys in the gut) in a favourable direction. Not sure how to get started with feeding veggies, consider making a butternut squash, purple sweet potato, broccoli and kale* mash and freezing in individual or mixed ice cube trays and feeding an ice cube worth a few times a week with their meal. ... This level is unlikely to upset the diet balance negatively, go slow if your pet has digestive upsets. Kale or Spinach should never be more than 5% of your pets daily diet due to oxalate content.
13.01.2022 Dogs are doing more great things. Medical detection dogs may play a role in protecting common places such as airports and railway stations from active covid-19 cases.

12.01.2022 Dr Matthew is at it again, talking all things natural feeding on the Pure Animal Podcast. This podcast is designed to help empower vets to learn more about how they could improve their nutritional counselling and clinical skills but we think many of you might find this interesting. We recognize there is no one size fits all approach to feeding pets but find the vast majority of pets thrive on a natural diet once they have been successfully transitioned, food intolerances are ...identified and avoided, the gut microbiome is healed, other stressors are addressed and the diet has the right macros for the individual pet (fat/fibre/protein ratios) Take a listen here: https://omny.fm//dr-matthew-muir-discusses-how-to-approach Have a great weekend

10.01.2022 Great job Dr Karen sharing her insights into how skin can be addressed using a holistic approach that particularly focuses on the gut-skin brain axis and avoiding medications with serious side effect profiles. Please note: While we LOVE MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS based on their impressive evidence-base in medicine, we do not condone anyone foraging mushrooms for their pets, as the photograph in the article shows. If your pet is struggling with allergies consider a holistic consultation to get to the root cause of the problem, and ideally, if addressed early, rely on natural feeding and strategic grooming as the basis of how allergies can be managed.

09.01.2022 Leptospirosis Update. For particular attention to our Eastern Suburbs, North Shore and Inner West client. Provided animals do not have severe diseases such as malignant cancer or uncontrolled autoimmune disease the risk:benefit analysis falls in favour of Leptospirosis Vaccination, for animals with major diseases a risk:benefit analysis should be carefully discussed on an individual basis, for everyone else, due to the Mortality rate and spread across multiple areas of Sydney..., please vaccinate your dogs or book an appointment to discuss further. The mortality rate for this disease is extremely high, approaching 100%. From North Shore Veterinary Specialists; In the last few weeks, The University of Sydney has identified two cases of Leptospirosis through its hospital. You may remember that last year there were eight identified cases of Leptospirosis in a similar geographic location of Sydney, the Inner West. This week North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre also has identified a case of Leptospirosis in our local area of the Lower North Shore. This is the first case we have detected from our surrounding communities. Leptospirosis, in dogs, initially causes very non-specific signs such as lethargy, elevated body temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea. It often progresses to symptoms consistent with liver and kidney failure. Dogs become infected by being in contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. The outcome of confirmed cases in Australia has not been as encouraging as in North America or Europe. The mortality rate for this disease is extremely high, approaching 100%. Our current recommendation is that if clients live within a 5km radius of the Artarmon/Crows Nest area, or frequent those areas, they should vaccinate their dog(s) against Leptospirosis. This is in accordance with guidelines issued last year by the University of Sydney, following the initial leptospirosis outbreak. We dont want to be alarmist, although we believe it is essential you are fully informed. Please SHARE.
08.01.2022 While we do think that perhaps Nexgard and Bravecto (Isoxazaline drug class) may be used as a scapegoat sometimes, we do think it is important to point out that the FDA in the USA has warned of the potential for neurological events other than seizures including tremors and incoordination (ataxia). Increasingly board-certified neurologists are aware of the impact these medications can have on dogs with seizures or triggering seizures, but we have experienced that the widespr...ead acceptance that Isoxazaline medications causes unusual neurological events is still low. It is our clinical observations that the potential for issues may be worse in dogs with dysbiosis/gut disturbances and some have proposed that the drug may be metabolised to other more potent forms of the active compounds in some dogs digestive tracts. There is a requirement for more research into this and at this stage we just want to reshare that there is potential for neurological issues associated with these medications. On a risk:benefit analysis some individuals may benefit from their use at protecting against lifethreatening paralysis tick envenomation, however this information should at least be accepted when conducted such an analysis. Please share to ensure this information is taken into account. Knowledge is power.
08.01.2022 Intermittent Fasting and use of a high protein low carb diet combined is the best way to get and keep weight off for most dogs (note some dogs with liver/kidney/gut issues need different strategies) Skinny dogs live for up to 2.5 years longer. 40% of Australian dogs are overweight. ... Most pets diets is considered high carb (>40%) So exciting that the evidence is emerging to support natural low glycemic load feeding as well as intermittent fasting
08.01.2022 Important information to share We love that more families seem to be adopting pets at the moment. Beyond the ethics, its important to realise that our vets see puppy farm puppies have more allergies, more congenital problems, more developmental problems and certainly recently, very intense gut parasites, bacteria and viruses due to poor hygiene. ... We are happy to help out for any family wishing to plan adopting a new family member, we can discuss rescue vs finding a quality breeder, and help you find a recommendation that meets your lifestyle, note, rescue dogs can definitely be a great option for many families Please share to spread awareness about puppy farms, you would probably be shocked to know how widespread they are.
06.01.2022 At ANVC we are huge advocates for species-appropriate feeding and nutrition forms part of every pets health care plan. Its important to share this (video quality not so good, but free) so people out there can start being more aware of how pets are likely to have ended up with diabetes, cancer, allergies, IBD and early ageing. Before people start commenting that genetics is to blame, please note that genetics is the loaded gun, and the environment (food, stress) pulls the tr...igger. A huge shout out to Dr. Karen Becker for all of her work As many of you have experienced the benefits of natural feeding perhaps share to help your friends and family learn about the limitations of conventional feeding practices (we suspect Australias rendering is not as unregulated as the USA, but still many similar concerns regarding protein quality and carbohydrate content) Sorry if this movie causes distress to you or your family. One last thing to consider from our very own Dr Matthew... if your paediatrician told you it was ok to feed one breakfast cereal, a protein powder and a multivitamin A-Z to your child for 80 years, that its got all the essential nutrients they needed, its convenient, its scientifically compete and balanced, and there is no evidence to suggest a colourful fresh diet really is needed, would you do it?....
