24.01.2022 As we pause to remember those who we have lost during times of War, we remember one of Allport's own. Morton Allport was born in Hobart on the 15 March 1887 to (Morton John) Cecil and Annie (nee Campbell) Allport. Known as Morton the Younger, he followed in his family's footsteps, became a lawyer and worked at the family firm, Dobson, Mitchell and Allport. He enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 and saw action on the Western Front. 2nd Lieutenant Morton Allport was ki...lled in action, in France, on this day (November 10th) in 1916. He was 29 years old. Lest We Forget. 23.01.2022 Ever looked at a piece of furniture and wondered what it may have seen, if only it had eyes? This folding screen of wood, leather, metal, brass, fabric and canvas, c1890, most probably graced a bedroom to provide privacy, and was no doubt witness to many a thing. What stories it could tell - if only it could talk. Currently removed for conservation, it is usually found standing proudly in the Bedroom at the Allport. Its beautifully painted leather panels, catching the eye of the viewer as they wander past. 21.01.2022 Meet the beautiful and yet tragic Mary Louise "Minnie" Reid ( nee Allport). Minnie was born in VDL, on Boxing Day 1832, the only daughter of Mary Morton and Joseph Allport. She inherited her mother's talent as an artist, had her heart broken by Daniel Finucane, a doctor on The Fantome, but found happiness when she married the dashing Lt. James Reid of the Bengal Staff Corps in 1853. Minnie and James had 6 children and lived most of their married life in India. While in India,... Minnie and her children survived a massacre in Fyzabad in 1857, only for her to die onboard the HMS Geelong on passage from Point de Galle to Melbourne, in July 1871. She was 38 years old. The Allport family and her deeply grieved husband, Lt Col. James Reid, commissioned a memorial window to her memory, which can be seen at the All Saints Church of England, South Hobart. James Reid re married and had a second family, yet he and his children remained in close contact with the Allport family. James Reid died in England in 1915.
