13.01.2022 From Harriett Janetos, via SPELLTalk: ‘Here's how educational psychologist Paul Kirschner explains it in "Inquiry Learning Isn't - A Call for Direct, Explicit I...nstruction" in ResearchEd, June 2008. He refers to the 'constructivist teaching fallacy' and distinguishes between constructivism as it relates to learning vs. constructivism as it relates to teaching. "Educators seem to confuse constructivism as a theory of how one learns and sees the world, and constructivism as a prescription for how to teach. In cognitive science, ‘constructivism’ is a widely accepted theory of learning; it claims that learners must construct mental representations of the world by engaging in active cognitive processing (i.e., schema construction). Many educators (unfortunately including professors in colleges of education) have latched on to this notion of students having to ‘construct’ their own knowledge and assume that the best way to promote such construction is to have students discover new knowledge or solve new problems without much guidance from the teacher. Unfortunately, this assumption is both widespread and incorrect. Mayer calls it the ‘constructivist teaching fallacy’. Simply put, cognitive activity can happen with or without behavioural activity, and behavioural activity does not in any way guarantee cognitive activity. In fact, the type of active cognitive processing that students need to engage in to ‘construct’ knowledge can happen through reading a book, listening to a lecture, watching a teacher conduct an experiment while simultaneously describing what he or she is doing, etc. Learning requires the construction of knowledge. Construction is not facilitated by withholding information from students."

13.01.2022 It’s still a chair! Not the same for some letters in the alphabet, though.

12.01.2022 Reading Eggs and Learn a Word - both branded ABC and both do not follow the reading science - time for the folk who produce this stuff to read the reading science and produce things which are actually useful and effective. Not good enough ABC.

05.01.2022 One Sound - Different Spellings /ee/ One of the difficult concepts that kids need to understand about the English Alphabetic Code is that one sound (phoneme) ca...n be spelled in different ways. It is important to teach this systematically and explicitly. The teacher may introduce these alternative spellings in a gradual way, but students will need to be able to read and spell words with all these alternatives. Here is a graphic with the first five spellings of the sound /ee/. There are more! For this level of reading see our Dandelion Readers Level 3 (UK editions only) https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk//dandelion-readers-level-3-/ #phonics #learningtoread #teachvowelteams #phonicsforkids

01.01.2022 One sound - different spellings One of the difficult concepts in the English Alphabetic Code is that a sound can be spelled in different ways. Unlike 'transpare...nt' writing systems like Italian or Spanish, where kids learn to read within three months, it will take the average child learning to read English three years! For this reason, we need to teach the Alphabetic Code in a structured and systematic way so all kids learn to read. Here is our graphic for the first five different ways to spell the sound /ae/. And there are more!
