24.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE WUSA supports in principle the statement released 16 March 2020 by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wellings, and commends the decision of the Universi...ty of Wollongong to prioritise the health and safety of students and staff during this time. However, WUSA has concerns in regard to the practical implementation of both educational and health measures. In response, WUSA President, Alec Hall, has stated There is a shared concern among both staff and students that to date there has been a slow reaction from the University in ensuring that for the remaining days of on-campus subject delivery, classrooms and lecture theatres will be sanitised after each class and that shared work and study spaces will be sanitised throughout the day. No commitment from the University has yet been made to provide staff and students with personal protective equipment, despite this being requested." During this public health emergency, more must be done to ensure that students receive high quality teaching during the period of remote access. There is great potential for lack of equitable access to remote delivery, including for students enrolled at satellite campuses, who have inconsistent NBN and wi-fi availability. For these students, the University must consider waiving fees and ensure that there are sufficient academic consideration provisions for those who require them. If the delivery of subjects via remote access after the census date does not sufficiently meet the subject description or if remote access is not of high quality, the University must ensure that students are able to withdraw from subjects without academic or financial penalty. In response to the uncertainty that staff of University of Wollongong face, WUSA stands in solidarity with the NTEU in calling for the University to commit to providing paid leave for casual staff, in line with those Universities that have already made this commitment. WUSA reflects the concerns of the NTEU in regard to increased work loads for staff because of the remote delivery and opposes any staff cuts during or after the public health emergency. The main concern of WUSA, as outlined by Alec Hall, is "that students should not be made to carry the financial burden that the University faces due to COVID-19, be that through the introduction of austerity measures or a reduced quality of education. Students must not be made to pay for the University's lack of preparedness or willingness to act decisively." Media Contact: Imogen Draisma 0401 009 612

21.01.2022 For anyone in need Rn these awesome ppl be out here doing divine work!

20.01.2022 At today's meeting we unanimously voted to endorse the STUDENT ACTION ticket for the 2019 WUSA elections. This ticket is being led by an openly queer person who has a proven history of activism not just involved in queer rights but including climate justice, wage theft and refugee rights. The other ticket running, "Yes for WUSA" has decided to co-opt branding and symbolism from the 2017 Yes campaign during the marriage equality survey. This is especially shameful as "Yes for... WUSA" is comfortable fielding candidates who eagerly campaigned for the No campaign back in 2017 just as they did last year. Don't trust the lies of "Yes for WUSA" VOTE [1] ALEC FOR PRESIDENT VOTE [1] STUDENT ACTION
