However, taking a guess at the amount of expenses incurred can land you in hot water, as can making an illegitimate claim like travel to and from work. That’s why it’s important to ensure what you’re claiming is considered a travel expense in the eyes of the ATO. If you use your vehicle for work, claimable vehicle and travel expenses include: Depreciation of your vehicle Registration costs of your vehicle Insurance costs of your vehicle Costs of running your car such as fuel, oil and servicing Vehicle and travel expenses that are not claimable include: The initial purchase cost of your car Parking tickets and other speeding fines You may be able to claim vehicle and/or travel expenses if you fall into the following situations: The cost of travelling between two separate work places The cost of travelling from your workplace to other locations, e.g. client meetings, project work sites If you are required to carry big work-related items such as tools or a ladder and these can't be left at work You're not eligible to claim travel or vehicle expenses for the following situations: Travel directly to and from work, as this is generally seen as private travel If you don't live near public transport and need to drive to work

03.01.2022 What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant? Bookkeepers As the name implies, a bookkeeper is someone who keeps the books. They are good at managing day-to-day paperwork, such as creating and sending out client invoices, managing supplier bills and receipts, and getting them into the computer system.... Accountants An accountant might do some bookkeeping, but given their higher rates this isn’t the best use of their time. Accountants typically take over when the bookkeeper has entered all the transactions, and they prepare monthly management accounts or year-end statutory accounts for a limited company.

02.01.2022 Keep an eye out for our tax time tips: Claims that catch out Tradies CLOTHING ITEMS: What you can’t claim... You can’t claim expenses on plain clothing worn at work even if your boss or site manager told you to wear plain clothing. This is where a lot of tradies fall down, as they claim expenses for cleaning both plain clothing (jeans, T-shirts and the like) and more specialised clothing such as hi-vis gear. What you can claim Luckily you can claim expenses for buying or mending costs for clothing unique to your job. This extends to things like company-issued polo shirts and safety equipment like hi-vis gear and steel-capped boots. But if you’ve already been reimbursed by your boss for these costs, then you can’t claim this expense again.
