20.01.2022 Stress causes a cascade of events in the body so we are able to fight or flee a threat to our safety. Our brain sends signals so we release epinephrine (adrenalin), which causes increased heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and the release of glucose and fats into the blood stream for immediate energy. We also get an increase in cortisol, which helps our body to stay on high alert until the threat passes. Centuries ago, this response would have helped us run away fr...om a lion. Nowadays the threats are generally much less dangerous (such as not meeting a deadline, having too many emails to respond to, or stress caused by dietary restriction e.g. consuming a food additive you told yourself to avoid or having more carbs than your self-prescribed diet allows), yet occur much more often. Unfortunately, frequent increases of epinephrine can damage blood vessels and arteries, and increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes. Elevated cortisol contributes to increased fat tissue and weight gain. 14.01.2022 What do you do with overripe bananas? Make banana bread of course! It also makes your house smell absolutely delicious!! For this banana bread, I used 1 and 2/3 cups buckwheat flour, 5 medium mashed bananas, 1/3 cup melted coconut oil, 2tsp vanilla extract, 3tsp cinnamon, 1/3 cup coconut sugar, 1tsp baking soda and a punch of iodised salt. Mix all ingredients, and put in a lightly greased loaf tin.
