25.01.2022 Sue Larkey, Autism Specialist, has some great tips about how teachers can deal with the issue of DYSGRAPHIA in our students - here's some tips from her and her podcast on the topic: Dysgraphia is a deficiency in the ability to write, regardless of the ability to read and not due to intellectual impairment. It is known to be associated with Autism (specifically Asperger Syndrome) and ADHD. Some key facts about children with Dysgraphia: Can usually write on some level, but ofte...Continue reading

18.01.2022 You have asked (and asked.... sorry for the delay ) for expressive language milestones and here they are! Stay tuned for more! **Its important to note that ki...ds all develop at different rates. A milestone occurs when 90% of children have mastered a particular skill. I always recommend children who are not meeting milestones to be seen for an evaluation- it doesnt necessarily mean they will need intervention (or that they wont catch up) - but it does mean I would want a specialist to determine if there is a need for intervention or monitoring of speech development. 18.01.2022 Leveling and limiting reduces exposure to a wider vocabulary- if your child brings home a book above their level from the library consider it an opportunity for snuggles every night until its finished (Opinion- my ownCartoon/image shared from Dyslexia WA)

18.01.2022 SUMMER SPORTS are meaning that a lot of students need to have sessions moved around for term 4 - if you need to change your slot or you would like to, can you p...lease let me know over the next few days as I have no movements possible without a few gaps..... my aim is to keep everyone happy and still receiving assistance (as of Fri 18/9/20) See more

18.01.2022 But hes so smart! Who hears this all the time? YES kids can be SO smart and still have a need for - and benefit from- intervention!!!

18.01.2022 Hi parents - can I just remind you to park at the oval on Shayne St and walk up to my house? It can get quite congested with everyone trying to get out of my loooong but narrow driveway --- thanks in advance I (and the neighbours) appreciate it -Rebekah

13.01.2022 I am currently comparing my student's current Orthographic Choice skills to last year's. It's always interesting to see which students have shifted and then match that against formal diagnosis that they may have received. Orthographic choice in this case is measured by a test in which readers are presented with two spelling options for a word that sounds the same eg: doar & door. This test shows that they have moved forward with their spelling ability as sounding out is not t...he tested activity here. "Most developmental theories propose that the sounding out of words, phonological decoding, is an important mechanism for reaching the final stage of automatic reading (for a review, see Ehri, 2005). Among these theories, the self-teaching hypothesis is associated with a strong claim for the importance of phonological decoding in orthographic learning (Share, 1995, 1999). It proposes that phonological decoding is the first and most important step of orthographic learning, providing an opportunity for this learning to take place. The act of phonological decoding is proposed to allow the reader access to a word's spoken form, as well as to draw their attention to the order and identity of the letters. This, together with repeated exposure to the new word, assists the reader in establishing an orthographic representation. According to the self-teaching hypothesis, although phonological decoding is crucial in orthographic learning, it is not the only factor: there is a secondary, orthographic processing component, which also determines the success of orthographic learning, although the nature of this mechanism is little understood (Share, 1995, 2011)." - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4081833/ https://www.slideshare.net//neuroscience-as-a-learning-the

12.01.2022 I have 2 Saturday Literacy students requiring a weekday afternoon ASAP, are there any afternoon students that would like to change to either an 11am or 1pm session on a Saturday? This change would need to be for the rest of 2020. If you would like this change, please let me know as soon as possible.

10.01.2022 There is a mighty writing program that Australian teachers, specialists and linguists such as the power behind Sounds Write, are learning from and presenting to their classes, it's called THE WRITING REVOLUTION. Those of us that use only evidence based programs are generally the supporters of "Reading and Writing Science." So it is almost needless to say that I had to dive into this guide on the art of teaching literacy. Many of my students in year 4 and upwards are starting... to experience the explicit teaching that this program has to offer. The activities are simple and I can see how a teacher working with multiple subjects, as well as literacy, could find this so valuable. Cross Curriculum teaching at it's best. I'd be really interested to know how other teachers are finding this program - so feel free to chat below https://www.thewritingrevolution.org/

08.01.2022 4 years! The last of my expressive language milestones! If you have any concerns about your childs ability to communicate their wants, needs, thoughts, etc at ...this age, I would highly recommend seeing a speech pathologist for an evaluation. Language is a part of everything kids learn at school (reading, writing, math, science, social studies, social skills, etc) and we want to be sure we are doing everything we can to set them up for success for when that time comes! **Its important to note that kids all develop at different rates. A milestone occurs when 90% of children have mastered a particular skill- which means the majority of kids this age have more advanced language skills than those listed.

07.01.2022 Saturday morning.... off we go... #teachloveinspire

07.01.2022 Little TREEHOUSE books If anyone has any spares could you please pop them in my letterbox or bring them to sessions - I'm using them for prizes for when my students succeed in something they find challenging - I am not into "collecting" anything other than books - AND it's encouraging my students to read!!!

06.01.2022 These 3 year old expressive milestones can be hard for many parents (especially ones who follow my page) to see, because in typically developing kids - there is... a HUGE gain in skills between 2-3 years of age. I share these because are really helpful for parents who arent quite sure if they need an evaluation- and also helpful for parents of children with known delays for ideas of what they could be focusing on or modeling at home! **Its important to note that kids all develop at different rates. A milestone occurs when 90% of children have mastered a particular skill- which means the majority of kids this age have more advanced language skills than those listed. I always recommend children who are not meeting milestones to be seen for an evaluation.
