24.01.2022 Were thrilled to share that our Project Global Citizen cultural competency accelerator program for international students has been awarded Victorian Government support through Study Melbourne. Today the Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade, Martin Pakula MP announced Project Global Citizen as a new initiative funded through the Victorian Governments International Student Welfare Program. Our 2019 project consortium is led by Melbourne Polytechnic under the leadership of ...Chewy Fang and Shane Lawtey. Other consortium members include Manorani Guy, President of Vicwise Global Services Ltd (Victorian Working Group on International Student Employability) and the two project co-founders, Astrid Hofmann of CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting and Craig Shim of Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists. On a recent Project Asia work trip, I was thrilled to be greeted at the entrance to Bundaberg Tourisms corporate office as well as their Visitor Information Centre by this waving turtle. Its one of the many tourism flat pack kits designed and manufactured by none other than my neighbours @wiWilliam Davy and Denise Davy who live across the road from me! Their business, KinetiKits, designs moving cardboard kits suitable for tourism promoti...ons and souvenir gifts (flat packed for easy assembly at home). From what Ive seen of their prototypes - and Wills quirky artwork featuring iconic landmarks and attractions from around Australia - I think these kinetic kits are fantastic! 15.01.2022 As a community member, local business owner and Chair of the Cultural Inclusiveness Committee in our local Chamber of Commerce, Im incredibly proud of our local Council for todays opening of the Hills District All-Abilities Playground. I think this facility is truly a game changer when it comes to community diversity and inclusiveness. Even if youre not from Brisbane, its well worth a visit. Every touchpoint has been extremely well designed to satisfy the needs of childre...n and adults of all physical and intellectual abilities. The fully fenced park features sensory elements from a large garden feature accessible to people in wheelchairs, to the inclusion of elements such as braille and visual impairment aids into playground equipment. Well done to Councillor Matt Constance MBRC and the team at Moreton Bay Regional Council this is a phenomenal asset to our community. 14.01.2022 For those of you who have worked internationally or hired international staff, Im sure youll relate to this. From first-hand experience, Ive learnt the hard way that what I consider as "highly desirable employability traits" and "professional behavior" can be perceived to be the exact opposite for people from a different cultural upbringing. Although Ive made my fair share of mistakes over the years, Im so grateful for the opportunities my career path has taken me to h...elp others develop their cultural self-awareness and cultural competence with regards to their global employability and cross-cultural leadership skills. 04.01.2022 Last week, I visited Bundaberg and Gladstone to run three Asia-Ready workshops for tourism operators. In the Project Asia Bootcamp organised by Bundaberg Tourism we workshopped ideas on implementing Asia-friendly enhancements in our businesses. Here are some of the outcomes: Overcoming language barriers using QR Codes and the translation function of Chinese app WeChat... Sharing personal recommendations for upselling - what our Asian visitors are really willing to pay for in terms of experiences, retail, food and drinks. Visibility in China - an initiative to start seeding Bundaberg content on Chinese digital platforms. SOPs for rough weather cancellations to keep visitors in region during rough weather events. Culturally appropriate ways to handle the sensitive issue of rate rises, with practical considerations on how to negotiate with Asian businesses.
