25.01.2022 FIREWEED - A SERIOUS PASTURE WEED Over the last few weeks I have noticed many paddocks with significant fireweed populations. Fireweed can poison livestock and with each plant producing up to 30,000 seeds a season is a difficult weed to eradicate. Fireweed contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids. These alkaloids cause irreversible liver damage. The more an animal consumes the worse the damage becomes. Hay, silage or grain contaminated with fireweed plants or s...eeds can poison livestock. Cattle tend to avoid the weed unless they are extremely hungry, however young, hungry or stock not familiar with fireweed are more likely to eat it. Cattle can lose weight, or their growth slows. Some animals develop brain damage, which can show as confusion and poor coordination. Sudden death can happen in fat cattle that have eaten fireweed in the last 3 to 6 months. For more information on Fireweed, including methods of control, have a read of the NSW Weed Wise page https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Details/53

20.01.2022 HOW DO YOU COOL DOWN IN THE HEAT? We all have different ways to cool down, so in one picture share what you do!

20.01.2022 A great write up in this weeks copy of The Land on the Meat & Livestock Australia Back to Business program. The impact of the fires is ongoing. I’m proud to have been able to assist in a small way and to see these stories shared is fantastic!

18.01.2022 Here’s an emoji I think we all want! Source Ranch House Designs, Inc.

18.01.2022 COLD CHANGE AHEAD FOR SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA The BOM is forecasting a significant change to move through from Thursday until Saturday. In NSW this is likely to be felt tomorrow (Friday). The change may see storms, strong wind, heavy rain and even snow! ... There are plenty of operations with young stock - lambs and calves - that need to be prepared ahead of the event. Consider moving stock to more sheltered paddocks. If necessary plan to produce some additional roughage to help keep animals warm. Don't forget streams, creeks and rivers can rise quickly and without warning, so if its flooded forget it! Listen to the Bureau of Meteorology and NSW SES for warnings and advice.

18.01.2022 REPLACEMENT HEIFER SELECTION Selecting replacement heifers is easily my favourite job! Yesterday I had the chance to look at one of the best lines of replacement females I've seen for a long time! It made finding the top draft pretty challenging, but it was a great challenge! Thanks to the Thompson family from Bundella for giving me the opportunity to make comment and look at these cattle!

15.01.2022 The bulls you buy this year could still be influencing your herd in 2030! This weeks Beef Central Genetics column looks at the timeline of breeding and the impact sires have over generations

15.01.2022 The move to highlight the provenance of the for we consume is growing across all industries. Its interesting to see the growing trend towards the need to capture experiences - the ultimate selfie - that many millennials are now embracing. How agriculture engages and captures this interest and desire to "experience events" will be interesting to watch. Today I attended a forum where the opportunities to create a brand around Southern Highlands Beef was explored. It was great to have some insights and market updates from industry leaders and sources such as Patrick Hutchinson from the Australian Meat Industry Council - National, Meat & Livestock Australia and from producers such as Sam Hayes from Mirrool Creek Lamb and Hugh Clark from Snake Creek Cattle Company.

15.01.2022 I've been requested by a client in the Bega Valley region to find a dozen light steers. If you have cattle that are between 310 - 350kgs, I'll be happy to negotiate a sale!

15.01.2022 Congratulations to the vendor of todays group of steers and heifers. I'm very pleased to see both groups sold and heading off to new owners. Thanks to the successful purchasers throuhg AuctionsPlus and BJA Stock and Station Agents of these cattle today

15.01.2022 The diversity of my job sometimes catches me off guard! Seven years ago I was working in Malaysia with supplies chains importing Rangeland Goats to ensure our welfare standards and traceability were consistently met. I learnt a lot and it was just one of the many opportunities I’ve had to support agriculture.

14.01.2022 If you're looking for options before your next sale - don't hesitate to ask what opportunities I can help you access!

13.01.2022 2020 was certainly a year for outstanding results for all breeds. Some interesting statistics across breeds in the yearly summary of sales by Beef Central

12.01.2022 KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR AUSTRALIAN PLAGUE LOCUSTS Its a few years since we have really had a big locust plague in NSW. The last two plagues took a massive effort to control, and this spring could be perfect for any locusts that may be hatching. Adult plague locusts usually like to lay eggs in harder loamy red soils, especially on compact roads next to crops, tree lines and farm buildings, especially those built on higher ground such as ridges. So when you are in those areas... - or areas where you have seen hatching in the past keep looking out. Locust egg beds can be identified by a series of small holes in the earth. When I was working on the plagues with NSW DPI I used to look for the birds chasing hatchlings. Flocks of ibis, wood swallows, crows and other large birds, love to chase them! If you do see hatchlings or locusts report them to your LLS as soon as possible so control ,measures can take place! https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au///pest-species-control/locusts

12.01.2022 The Meat & Livestock Australia Annual Report features Deb Gray who I have been working with on the Back to Business recovery project following the summer bushfires. I'm very proud to have been part of this project and to be working with a number of producers to find ways to get back into business again.

11.01.2022 The latest BOM predictions for inland areas. I've heard from a few clients of some good falls already. It's important not to underestimate these predictions as localised flooding can occur quickly. I'd love to know what's happening on your place. But remember, if its flooded, forget it!

11.01.2022 It’s been a big week looking at several clients plans and directions. From heifer selection to selling stock it’s been really rewarding.

11.01.2022 How well do you understand the breed index's in sale catalogues? Explaining what the index is and how it can be used to search for sires is one of the more frequent requests I receive. This week's Beef Central Genetics Column explains what drives index values a how they can help guide you towards more balanced genetic selection for your environment and market.

11.01.2022 RaynerAg will be commencing an online Cost of Production analysis and improvement workshop. Run over 4 sessions with individual and group discussion, this workshop is designed to improve your beef business. To register just send a DM or email me

10.01.2022 This year will be a memorable year not only for the record prices across the bull sales, but for the number of heifers retained and joined. Retaining extra heifers may mean some producers are compromising on traits - however these compromises can be managed with some long term focus. My genetics column in Beef Central looks at this timely topic.

10.01.2022 Does your breeding objective clearly highlight the traits you need to breed profitable cattle? There are some traits that can be overlooked and its important to understand what makes your cattle profitable! In this weeks Beef Central genetics column I've looked at this issue and offered a few suggestions.

10.01.2022 This week RaynerAg Bull of the week comes from Bulliac Angus in Queensland. The Bulliac Angus cattle have proven themselves in northern programs and its exciting to see these cattle do so well in programs. This is Bulliac Pantera P512 and is a great example of these cattle. A structurally sound, well grown and well muscled bull, I'm sure he will capture the attention of many northern producers looking to add these traits to their herd. He will be Lot 7 at the sale on 24th September

09.01.2022 I'm very excited to be working with Goldstein Park Limousins to hold a beef producers field day at Cobargo next month. This day is supported by Meat & Livestock Australia and South East Local Land Services and will focus on the key issues for producers who are managing properties on the south coast. Particular focus will be on pasture recovery and management after the 2020 bushfires; the lessons learnt to speed recovery; managing cattle health and setting some strategic mana...gement plans in place. Due to Covid-19 places are limited and pre registration is essential. If you do come we will have morning tea and lunch. But you will need to bring your own chair! Registrations close December 9th.

06.01.2022 Looking to increase your breeder numbers? I have a good line of young cows and calves available. Send me a message or give me a call if you're interested!

05.01.2022 This week is a huge one for the Australian Brahman Breeders' Association Limited with the start of the 2020 Brahman week sale. There is over 800 bulls on offer this week. One of the bulls worth looking for is this impressive sire Bizzy F Bulldozer (PP) from Innes and Jessica Fahey's program in Northern NSW. This bull has me great growth traits, a lot of muscle through his hindquarters and is structurally very correct. He will be lot 711, and well worth an inspection before the sale.

05.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE A WILD DOG PROBLEM? Wild dogs are an increasing problem, with the last ABARES wild dog survey highlighting 66% of producers indicating a problem. However did dogs can be elusive, and it's not always possible to identify if they are present on your property. The National Wild Dog Plan (www.wilddogplan.org.au) has a checklist you can use to see if you have a problem!

05.01.2022 Today marks National Agriculture Day! While we celebrate agriculture, its a good time to reflect on how farmers across the country have responded to the past four years - drought - fire and Covid to name just the big challenges. The day to day challenges of remote working, coping with uncertainty and operating a business shouldn't be overlooked. I'm so greatful I've been able to have a career in agriculture, and I couldn't have that without the support of farmers! If you... can, share your pictures of how you will be spending National Ag day #AGDAYAU

04.01.2022 Investing in research and ensuring our industries are at the forefront of environmental, productive and sustainable practices is something all of us in Agriculture can be proud of. Ahead of tomorrow's National Agriculture Day - its worth stopping to think how much we do invest #AgDayAU

04.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a significant heat wave for NSW, SA, the NT and parts of western QLD and northern Victoria over coming days. Heat waves have significant risks for humans and livestock. Early planning to manage your tasks to avoid the heat is essential, as is ensuring livestock are able to access shade and sufficient water. Water consumption may be as much as 80% higher for livestock on hot days

03.01.2022 The Spring edition of the RaynerAg e-newsletter is hitting inboxes today! Featuring BJA - Stock and Station Agents; Weebollabolla; Bulliac Angus; Bimbadeen Brangus and a link to the AuctionsPlus webinars. Theres also some tips on bull soundness and managing bloat this spring. Have you opened your copy yet?

03.01.2022 Continuing my discussion on the long term influence of sires, the value a new bull contributes to a herd is the subject of this weeks genetics column in Beef Central. It's important to remember there is a short term lift from slaughter progeny, but the real value accumulates in the females sired in a herd.

03.01.2022 Thanks to long term clients Devanah Angus and Murray Grey Cattle Stud for asking me to pregnancy test their cow herd this year. We also took the opportunity to take 200 day weights, mature cow weights, cow frame size and several other assessments critical for developing more accurate EBVs. As the video shows, it was a pretty busy day!

02.01.2022 The 2021 season of pregnancy scanning is underway! Thanks to Cadfor Murray Greys for requesting me to deliver this service today. Its always great to work with quiet cattle and good people!
