17.01.2022 If you need to transport your cat to the vet or for boarding, it’s important to always use a pet carrier, so that the cat remains safe and contained. To create a more relaxing experience for your cat, you can familiarise them with the pet carrier prior to travel and use a calming cat pheromone spray inside the carrier. Speak with our friendly team for more advice on how to make transporting your cat a positive experience for all.

16.01.2022 Exercising pets during the heat of the day can result in heat stress and other injuries, such as burnt paw pads. During warmer weather, it can be a good idea to exercise your dog during the cool of the early morning or later in the evening. You can also exercise your pet on grassed areas to ensure they’re protected from the heat of pavements or roads. Always ensure your pet also has access to fresh drinking water after exercise to prevent dehydration.

08.01.2022 If you’re leaving your pet home alone on Christmas Day, tire them out with some pre-emptive exercise, such as walks for dogs or toy-chasing for cats. Leave them in a cool, well-ventilated area, with bedding, water and a few toys. Ensure your pet can access toileting facilities if you’ll be gone more than three hours. It helps to spray your pet’s bedding with some calming pheromone spray (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats). Some pets may also enjoy soft background music or TV. Keep your pet happy and occupied with a safe chew treat (such as a stuffed Kong), or a food hunt around the house. If you think your pet will be anxious without you, call us today to discuss safe anti-anxiety medication for your pet.

08.01.2022 Before offering your pet any festive foods, check first that it doesn’t contain any of these potentially toxic ingredients: - Raisins, sultanas or grapes - Onions or garlic - Chocolate, cacao or caffeine - Xylitol sweetener... - Macadamia nuts Avoid giving your pet any cooked bones to gnaw on (they can put them at high risk of gut obstruction or injury), or fatty foods such as leftover ham (which can trigger pancreatitis in some animals). If you think your pet may have accidentally eaten any of these ingredients, bring your pet in to see us immediately. See more

06.01.2022 From all the team here at the Altona Veterinary Clinic, we would like to wish all of our lovely clients and their families a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We would like to take this time to thank you all for your ongoing support, in what has been a very challenging year. We are looking forward to 2021 being a bigger and brighter year and hope to see you all! Love Eric and all the team xx

04.01.2022 Installing a cat scratching post inside your home can be a great way to encourage cats to scratch without ruining your favourite furniture. Scratching posts come in all manner of shapes and sizes - you can even build your own. Scratching behaviour is normal in cats, so providing them with one or more scratching posts will help save your furniture and keep kitty happy.

04.01.2022 If you’ve got your holidays booked and you’re planning to put your pets into boarding whilst you’re away, you need to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with their vaccinations prior to boarding. Canine cough is a common respiratory disease seen in dogs, and can be especially prevalent in situations when dogs are stressed or anxious. Make sure to book your pet in with us for their vaccinations well before you plan to head away.

04.01.2022 School Holidays are here! Are you planning on going away? Don't forget to organise the appropriate care for your pet before you leave. To make planning easier, here's a list of things for you to consider:... 1. Organise a carer for your pet. 2. Make sure you leave enough pet food and a guide on how much they are fed daily. 3. Ensure your pet is protected against nasty parasites, and is up to date with vaccinations. 4. If your pet is on medications, ensure you have enough for them while you are away. If you are unsure if your pet is up to date please contact the clinic on 9398 3333.

01.01.2022 PETS ON MEDICATION! This is just a reminder to all owners who have pets on medications to stock up over the Christmas/New Year period. Due to the public holidays and the Christmas postal rush, we may experience some delays in getting your pet's medications in on time. If you need more of your pet's medications please contact the clinic to place an order. Please ensure you order your pet's medications well before they run out and give at least 48 hours' notice.
