25.01.2022 Installing a cat scratching post inside your home can be a great way to encourage cats to scratch without ruining your favourite furniture. Scratching posts come in all manner of shapes and sizes - you can even build your own. Scratching behaviour is normal in cats, so providing them with one or more scratching posts will help save your furniture and keep kitty happy.

25.01.2022 It’s important to always ensure your pets have access to fresh drinking water. During warmer weather, pets can quickly become dehydrated, which can lead to heat stress and can be fatal. It is a good idea to provide multiple water bowls in case one gets knocked over, and place them in a shady or protected spot so the water stays cool on a hot day.

22.01.2022 While animals have a thick skin layer on their footpads, they can still be just as painfully burnt by hot surfaces as we can. In the summer sun, the pavement can reach temperatures of up to 60C, and stays hot for hours after! Before walking your pet onto any hard surface on a hot day, check it with the touch test if you can’t hold your hand on the ground for more than 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet to safely walk on.

21.01.2022 Whether you’re in a rural or suburban area of Australia, be aware of the increased risk of snake bites during the warmer months of the year. Pets bitten by snakes often show symptoms such as collapse (sometimes with temporary recovery after), weakness or paralysis, muscle tremors, loss of toileting control, or unusual bleeding or dark urine. If you think your pet may have suffered a snake bite, bring them to our team immediately for urgent assessment and treatment.

16.01.2022 If you’ve got your holidays booked and you’re planning to put your pets into boarding whilst you’re away, you need to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with their vaccinations prior to boarding. Canine cough is a common respiratory disease seen in dogs, and can be especially prevalent in situations when dogs are stressed or anxious. Make sure to book your pet in with us for their vaccinations well before you plan to head away.

15.01.2022 A summer pool dip is a great way to exercise and have fun with your pet, whilst keeping everyone cool! To ensure your pet stays safe in the water, ensure there’s always a responsible adult supervising. Check that your pet can actually swim this is not an automatic skill that every dog possesses! If you’re unsure, buy them a properly-fitted dog life-jacket and slowly introduce them to the water. Lastly, ensure your pet cannot access the pool when you’re not around.

15.01.2022 Exercising pets during the heat of the day can result in heat stress and other injuries, such as burnt paw pads. During warmer weather, it can be a good idea to exercise your dog during the cool of the early morning or later in the evening. You can also exercise your pet on grassed areas to ensure they’re protected from the heat of pavements or roads. Always ensure your pet also has access to fresh drinking water after exercise to prevent dehydration.

14.01.2022 Is your pet shaking its head? Have you noticed a funny smell coming from the ears or are they looking a little red? Ear infections are one of the most common reasons we see dogs in the clinic! There are a number of reasons dogs will get ear infections one of the most common causes is an underlying allergy however they can also be caused by excess discharge and hair, foreign material such as grass seeds, and swimming too frequently. The shape and conformation of the ear can... also make a dog more likely to develop an infection. If you are concerned your dog might have developed an ear infection then book an appointment today. Our vets will examine your pet’s ears with an otoscope which allows them to see right down the ear canal and visualise the ear drum and check for any foreign material. The vets will also want to take a swab and have a look under the microscope to check which type of infection is present. Ear infections are usually bacterial or fungal and it's important to know what type of ear infection is present in order for the vets to prescribe the best medication. Fry was found to have a yeast infection, he was put on a course of anti-fungal drops and is now feeling much better!

05.01.2022 If you need to transport your cat to the vet or for boarding, it’s important to always use a pet carrier, so that the cat remains safe and contained. To create a more relaxing experience for your cat, you can familiarise them with the pet carrier prior to travel and use a calming cat pheromone spray inside the carrier. Speak with our friendly team for more advice on how to make transporting your cat a positive experience for all.

03.01.2022 If your dog has a red or sore ear, or unusually smelly ear discharge, they may have an ear infection! Ear infections occur more commonly during spring and summer, due to hot/humid conditions, or underlying seasonal allergy triggers, such as pollen. Pets are also more prone if they have floppy or hairy ears, or if they swim frequently. If you think your pet is developing an ear problem, book them for a consultation with us ASAP! Ear infections are painful and are best treated early.
