19.01.2022 Hi Everyone. I've become a bit passionate lately about spiders and quelling some of the myths and fears around them. One family of spiders that inspires a lot o...f unjustified fear is the Lamponidae family (White tail spiders). I have a few other videos on the same channel about some other misunderstood spiders and have (slightly too grandiose) plans to do more, if I can find the spiders I need to film. For now, hopefully this video helps clear up some of myths surrounding white tails. I know some people have their own stories about what has happened...including myself and my own immediate and extended family. I do not discount these stories or mean any offence to anyone, up until ten years ago when I started researching this stuff myself, I believed them too...now I see more and more evidence in the opposite direction. Hope everyone enjoys the video, I'm happy to try and answer any questions.

19.01.2022 I would like to wish all my friends, customers and family a very merry Christmas and hope you all stay safe on the roads. I look forward to seeing you all again soon. Thank you and take care out an about.

05.01.2022 Fire Ants invasion in WA... this doesn’t JUST affect Ag... this AFFECTS EVERYONE! Currently, our state Minister of Ag believes there have been 6 nests located i...n Fremantle port. She has quarantined a set area and called for residents of Fremantle to rally. Awesome. Here’s the thing though.... our mates Jaimie Varcoe and Jim Willmott from Green Shirts Movement QLD (both former bio security officers and Fire Ant experts with several years experience chasing this nasty pest under their belts), are warning NO... More Fire Ants will be there, it’s all but certain, they just don’t know what they’re looking for. ...there’s so much more to this and they adamantly warn that the threat is VERY SIGNIFICANT to ALL of Ag and the wider general public. Here’s why... * There’s no consistency to what the nests look like. There can be general appearance, but sometimes active nests look like nothing more than a minuscule pile of dust or fine wood shavings. * FireAnt nests DO NOT have a visible entrance. They will look for all intents and purposes like a pile of fine soil that someone has tossed aside. It's not until you give them a bit of a poke that they'll come roaring out. In fact, just a stamp of the foot on the ground in the general area of an active nest is often enough to solicit a swift reaction from them. They are super aggressive. The ants will pour out of the nest like the chocolate comes out of the centre of a Lava Cakes when you press it with a spoon. That sheer aggression is THE biggest giveaway. * Tracking the spread of the invasion and finding the nests a lot is done on feel/intuition he says. Recogniseing those subtle shapes that otherwise don’t belong in the landscape, but once you tune in your (fire ant) radar, they start to pop up everywhere * Their sting is excruciating. They will grab you with their mandibles and then inject the venom with the sting on their abdomen... multiple times! Thing is, you don’t just get stung by just one at a time.... no... by the time you’re getting hit, there’s hundreds and thousands on you and they wait/coordinate so they all sting in unison. You literally feel like you are on fire or have been doused in acid * They are deadly. Literally. They can and have killed people in the USA, young children and elderly particularly vulnerable. Especially if allergic to things like bees for example. * Fire Ants are prolific breeders and colonisers. They WILL invade and take over suitable areas. * They are ferocious omnivores and will EAT ANYTHING. Plants, seeds, small animals, frogs, other insects etc. * They are a significantly serious threat to cropping and grazing producers. When they infest these systems FireAnts will render the land effectively useless, and there is evidence that they secrete a chemical into the ground surrounding their nest (which can be extensive) so nothing will grow near it. They are an environmental and agricultural disaster * They will infest metro areas just as freely as farming land and potentially affect land values * Newborn calves have been seen swarmed by fireants and stung in the eyes till rendered blind. When ants enter the nasal passages and mouths, the passages and tongue swell and the animal essentially chokes to death. FireAnts easily kill young calves, lambs and other infant animals * The Queen FireAnts fly. When the new Queens take to wing, the go in search of soft ground to establish a nest. Cropping/grazing areas fit this criteria. In Qld FireAnts tend to favour sorghum due to timing of sowing falling around the time the Queen’s are looking for nesting sites * Entire colonies can float. This means flooding just assists the spread. They use their own bodies and create a raft around the larvae and Queen. * In dry times they burrow. They can go down 25-30 foot if necessary to reach the water table and dwell there till it’s favourable above ground. #greenshirtsmovementwa #WAFireAntInvasion #unitingAg #biosecuritymatters #worktogether Alannah MacTiernan Liberals WA The Nationals WA WAFarmers The Pastoralists & Graziers Association of WA (Inc) Oliver Peterson News Talk 6PR 882 Farm Weekly Elders Primaries of WA ABC Great Southern Rick Wilson Jaimie Varcoe Mia Davies MLA Hon Colin de Grussa MLC Albany Advertiser The Avon Valley Advocate Broome Advertiser Liza Harvey Shane Love Stirlings to Coast Farmers The Gillamii Centre Inc. 04.01.2022 An invasive ant species whose bite can be lethal has been found at Fremantle Ports, the first time it has been detected in WA, prompting concerns about the spre...ad of the pest. The red imported fire ant is considered one of the world's worst invasive ant species, as it can form super colonies with multiple queens that develop extensively and spread quickly. Six nests were found at Fremantle Port last week and destroyed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD. Authorities are now surveying the port and nearby surroundings for any further signs of the pest. Agriculture Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the ants could inflict a painful, fiery sting, which in rare cases could cause a severe acute reaction. "There have been people who have been killed, there are a number of individuals who have an anaphylactic reaction to it," she said. "It's definitely caused deaths and it has caused lots of people to become quite ill, so it is really quite a serious pest. "When it bites human beings it causes the body to react like it is on fire. She said she was hopeful the nests had been destroyed early enough to prevent the further spread of the pest.
