We took a small group through some of Melbourne's hidden lanes and alleyways as well as the State Library and took some great images. We never take more than six people on these walks and take two teachers. We are next in Melbourne for a city walk on Sun April 11. 22.01.2022 Hi Everybody, As my last post caused a reaction from the non spider lovers out there. I though i would post the rest of the shoot from that day. Including an interesting golf problem. As regards the main image "This is the Wattle, the emblem of our Land. You can stick it in a bottle, you can hold it on your hand" (With Thanks to Eric Idle) #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography
22.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Nature is kind to us, providing photographic subjects even in Lock-down. These Orchids are out now and waiting to be photographed, Tip, use a diffuser to reduce the Sunlight and it also acts as a windbreak. I also use a Manfrotto Pixie Mini Tripod. #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography #orchids
22.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Still looking to make the ordinary look extraordinary. Water on grass captured this week and a hungry caterpillar. Lets hope this weekend means less restrictions and more chance to get out! And of course take more photos
21.01.2022 Hi Everybody, I have been experimenting with using HDR methods on Macro images. One of the results is this little Peacock Spider, the low depth of field combined with the HDR (High Dynamic Range) makes an interesting effect? Or not? #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography #hdrphotography
21.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Getting out to take photos in lock-down is difficult. luckily for me nature can help! This Owl (Boobook) was out in daylight and happy to be photographed today. If you look carefully you can see the photographer (me) in his eyes #alwynsphotoschool #owls
21.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Another busy week and desperately trying to catch up! We ran a great class at Melbourne Zoo last week. The Zoo is busy at the moment (possibly due to its TV series on Channel 9) so weekdays are a good idea if you plan to book with us. The class all got good results and fun was had by all. We are next at the Zoo on Thursday 25 March. For more details go to our event page. or this link for all our classes https://www.eventbrite.com.au/o/alwyn-hanson-alwyns-photo-s
21.01.2022 Hi Everybody, My last Fungi Photo (Possibly?) Found this little fellow hiding by the road. Latin classification is Fungicolesstikeezorus.Image by Alwyn Hanson for Alwyns Photo School Melbourne #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography
21.01.2022 Hi Everybody, One of the tasks I give my students, is to photograph an object they see every day in 10 different ways. I am going to do that my self over the next weeks of lock-down. Firstly and old abandoned truck near to our property. (I call it "Uncle Otto's Truck" a reference for any Stephen King fans out there.) #alwynsphotoschool
20.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Parrots and Bokeh. One of the most common questions I get is about backgrounds in nature. These images show how effective green can be with bright colours. For some reason digital cameras "hate" vivid reds making parrots like these Rosellas hard to capture. In this case the green background makes it work. The Cockatoo just flew in because he thought there might be food. The Bokeh comes courtesy of a 400mm lens at F4 #alwynsphotoschool
19.01.2022 Hi Everybody, I know I keep posting webs and water images but I do love them. This was from over a year ago. I love the effect of seeing through the drops to another world. #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography

15.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We managed to run a class at Melbourne Zoo on the first day back from lockdown. The Zoo was empty and very warm! 14.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Like all of us I am missing Melbourne CBD. Due to the current restrictions, I cannot run the school's city walk until October. Here are some images of Melbourne that I love. The dramatic effect was achieved in Lightroom using contrast and saturation tools. #alwynsphotoschool #melbourne

14.01.2022 Hi Everybody, A piece of History. A feature on Digital Cameras from 2006 by "A Current Affair" See if you can spot the "Camera Expert" in the first section. (A clue-its ME!) I know its 4mins long but worth it just to see the cameras we made such as fuss about (3 megepixel cameras!). #alwynsphotoschool
13.01.2022 Hi Everybody Seagull Shadows on canvas roof. Melbourne Feb 2021. We sometimes have to look for a great photo or in this case have your colleague point it out (Thanks Michael Scott)
12.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Were back! Finally we got a chance to run some classes (outside and with limited numbers). These images were taken on out first Night Walk of the year in Melbourne's CBD on Wednesday. A beautiful and still night, all had fun. 11.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We are back part 2!! We ran our first Zoo class since lock-down a few days ago. Despite a few areas being closed off (enclosed areas) we had a fabulous time. 09.01.2022 Hi Everybody, one of my students said last week that the reason I keep posting good images is that I have an expensive camera! So these images were taken with my very basic smartphone yesterday morning. Some slight editing (removing my thumb for a start!) . I am a great believer in the phrase-"Photography is not based on what you have, but on what you know. We see photos. Expensive equipment can help to improve them, but you can't buy the Art of Photography". #alwynsphotoschool #YarraValley
09.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We had our first outside event since lock-down on Sunday (18) and had a fantastic time. It was our first Redwoods/Rivers & Rain-forests class. Despite a cold start we had an amazing time. We started along the Yarra in Warburton then to the Redwood forest where our glamorous model, April (one of our team) dressed in a Red cape and dress we had organised for the event. Then to the rain-forest. #alwynsphotoschool #redwoodsnationalpark
08.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We ran our first Melbourne Zoo class since lockdown on Sunday. Despite some of the Zoo displays being closed we had a great day. Melbourne Zoo is doing its best post lockdown and even having free flying Macaw displays. We are back at the Zoo in January for dates and booking go the the updated events section on this page. Or go to the main website www.alwynsphotoschool.com.au
08.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We spent the day at Badger Creek near Healesville looking for locations for next years classes. But also a good excuse to finally get out with the cameras. The shot of the water-drops in a spiders web involved crawling through mud and putting the camera through a hole in the mud-bank-the things we do for Art! #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography
08.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Fog over the Yarra Valley October 2020. Nature can be so beautiful at this time of year. Although you have to get up early to catch the light! #alwynsphotoschool #foggymorning #yarravalley

08.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Beauty & Danger. At the top a beautiful flower, yet the base is the Flytrap! Isn't nature wonderful. Now is a great time to take images. We might only be allowed out for exercise but surely we can take our cameras! Look close to the ground to see the marvels Mother Nature has in store for us, from a leaf covered in dew drops to a fern with a beautiful background colour. #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography
07.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We had a fabulous class on Sunday in Melbourne's Fitzroy/Treasury Gardens. if you think its winter and there are no flowers, think again! The gardeners have done an amazing job and the range of colours is superb. We go to the Gardens next in September. #alwynsphotoschool#melbournefitzroygardens
06.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Sleeping Koala from our class at Healesville this week. I am always amazed at the photo opportunities that Healesville Sanctuary offers. On this day we were extremely lucky, especially with this beautiful Koala image. That was our last Healesville class for 2020 we are now booking for January. #alwynsphotoschool #healesville #koala #pelican #owl
06.01.2022 Hi Everybody, The rain held off and we had a brilliant Zoo class on Thursday. Everybody took great images as all the residents came out to be photographed. Melbourne Zoo is quieter at the moment as the numbers are restricted due to Covid. We are next at the Zoo in August but are at Healesville twice next week on Thursday and Saturday-Come and join us, book by the events link below #alwynsphotoschool #melbournezoo
06.01.2022 Hi Everybody, This is the view over the Yarra Valley in Fog this morning as we went to our first Healesville class since lock-down. Thanks to the balloon company for great timing #alwynsphotoschool #melbourne #yarraglen
05.01.2022 Hi Everybody, We had a fabulous class on Sunday in Fitzroy Gardens. Melbourne's gardens are beautiful now and we spent time exploring the features on the new Olympus cameras and learning how to use ND filters. It was quite sad to see the Covid19 restrictions have affected the model village school access. Our next Garden & Flower class is on Sat July 25, bookings can be made by the event section or the website. #alwynsphotoschool #fitzroygardens #melbourne
05.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Sorry to the Arachnophobes - more spiders. but very small ones. Peacock Spiders and water drops on a barbed wire fence. The joy of Macro photography is you can find beauty in the smallest places, but you have to look. PS If you look very carefully you can see me, my camera and my tripod in the first spiders eyes. #alwynsphotoschool #spiders #macrophotography
03.01.2022 Hi Everybody, As we get deeper into ISO we have made some changes at home. We have started growing our own bread (?) and making giant mushrooms for omelettes (?). Also the local spiders are now in team colours (Essendon!) At least the local Kangaroos seem unaffected! #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography
03.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Things to photograph in lock-down. These images are taken of the surface of bubbles. To do this, use a bubble blower but photograph the liquid caught in the plastic ring before blowing. A well placed LED light helps as well. You can use a macro lens if you like. #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography #bubbles
02.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Spring is here! The first Blue-Tongue lizard of the season pictured below our bedroom window this morning. As is usual with these guys, they can stay very still, allowing for close up photography. But if you take your eyes off them they move like lighting and are gone. (Note-Photographer visible in its eye!) #alwynsphotoschool #bluetonguelizard
02.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Nature has again been kind to us with beautiful Fog in the mornings (as long as you don't mind the cold) These images were taken in the Yarra Valley yesterday. The time frame is very small as when the fog lifts the wind makes all the webs move and makes photography of water-drops on them difficult, but worthwhile. #alwynsphotoschool #melbourne #foggymorning
02.01.2022 Hi Everybody, As are in lock-down I have to look closer to home for images. This little baby Huntsman was hiding in our shed this morning, Sorry if you are agoraphobic but he is beautiful. #alwynsphotoschool #macrophotography
01.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Fun today rehearsing our Macro class tomorrow. This tiny fly caught on a web was great for trying out my new Macro Ring Flash. PS we still have some places left on our macro class in Eltham tomorrow for more details go to this link https://alwynsphotoschool.com.au/macro-photography
01.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Early morning Rainbow from our Balcony. Sat July 11 Day three in lockdown. Beauty is always there for those who look, How many photos can we take in six weeks! #alwynsphotoschool
