19.01.2022 Some highlights from Yesterdays workshop @tactilearts - Collecting and Connecting with Cyanotype . Circumstance blessed us with the company of beautiful Rosemary and her 2 daughters from far away lands. We played with plants and Cyanotype printing , an alternative photographic technique invented by John Herschel in the early 1800s. His niece, English botanist Anna Atkins, is regarded as one of the first female photographers due to her explorations and discoveries that co...ntributed significantly to the evolution of photography. The cyanotype process involves placing objects, such as leaves , on paper coated with light-sensitive chemicals and then left in sunlight. Botanists such as Anna Atkins recognised the usefulness of the cyanotype technique for recording the details of plant structure and for capturing and recording information of fragile dried specimens. She published the first photographic books, including : Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Atkins’s stunning plant prints were the botanist’s means of understanding and settling a curiosity with her direct surrounds, thus creating a relationship and understanding with the natural world. I am thankful to be be on beautiful Larrakia Land , curiously crafting with lovely ladies from near and far . I also give thanks to Anna Atkins whose own spirit of curiosity still inspires us today #ecoart #ecofeminism #annaatkins #cyanotype #cyanotypeprint #cyanotypeprocess #ecoartist #fibreart #fibreartist #fiberartist #botanicalart @ Darwin, Northern Territory

18.01.2022 My heart goes out to my friends and family in Victoria. I feel you, i love you, i’m here. Hit me me up for a chat or craft materials and inspiration if you need a new pandemic pastime or have decided to finish that half finished thing . The artwork pictured is from back in 2010 , titled ‘Love Nest’ , made from an old nest and a piece of turtle bone, painted with tree blood #lovenest #stayconnected #ecoart #fibreart #fibreartistsofinstagram #fiberartist

18.01.2022 I have been weaving the seas clean for over 15 years and this is my first ghost net basket for the year . It is woven and stitched from ghost net ropes found on beach walks on Warnindilyakwa Land, known as Groote Eylandt , in the Gulf of Carpenteria. Approximately 640,000 tonnes of 'ghost gear' is left in oceans, worldwide, each year. It can stay in the oceans for up to 600 years, trapping sea creatures and birds and causing them injury or long and painful deaths.... Ghost Net is actually quite a nice material to work with , and i love the colours and textures of the nets, when they aren’t in the sea, indiscriminately killing marine life . I was first invited to Groote Eylandt in 2011 by Ghost Nets Australia to work with Anindilyakwa women to weave with the nets retrieved from their seas by the @anindilyakwarangers . Baskets and sculptures were made by young and old using traditional basket making techniques and some of these were exhibited in the exhibition ‘A Long Tide ‘ , which was a survey exhibition of ghost net art by Indigenous and non-indiegenous artists from across Australia @artisanqld . Since 2015 i have had the honour of working here @anindilyakwa_arts , with many talented and strong women . Take a look at their feed and and website to see their amazing work. #ghostnetart #fibreart #fibreartistsofinstagram #fibreart #fiber #fiberartistsofinstagram #ecoart #ecoartist #oceanart See more

17.01.2022 Happy Monsoon!! At last! Sweat Season has subsided ( perhaps only momentarily ) and we celebrate the sweet relief and beauty of monsoonal rain. My garden and heart is singing and meanwhile, the jellyfish babies are flushed down from the creeks and into the seas . Perhaps you are looking for a present for yourself or others to celebrate this or some other reason . May i suggest the gift of #handmadewithlove and local? , If you’re in Darwin , my handwoven Jellyfish jewellery can be found @thelocalnt and @starwincollective and in Katherine @gyracc , three amazing small businesses packed to the brim with #oneofakind gifts. #jellyfishjewelry #oceanart #fibreart #fibreartist #darwinnt #monsoon #fiberartistsofinstagram #wearableart

17.01.2022 This work features in my recent solo exhibition - ‘From Mangroves to Mudflats’ @tactilearts . The small vessels are handwoven completley from ghost net i have found on Groote Eylandt where i have been working @anindilyakwa_arts since 2015. It is titled Longitude 13 Degrees Sourh because that’s where the Island is situated. The 13 pieces form a 3 dimensional seascape reflecting the hues of the Arafura sea , that blue, blue ocean and those glowing orange cliffs. 16.01.2022 Some of the beautiful work from the 9 lovey ladies who joined me yesterday @tactilearts in my Making Shift Master Class to weave and manifest their hopes and dreams for positive change, learning new skills to explore the use of several contemporary basketry processes used throughout the world. We used unexpected and surprising materials with a focus on recycled and sustainably sourced fibres, including upcycled plastic and clothing and marine debris found on top-end beaches. #ecoart #ecoartist #ecoartists #basket #fibreart #fibreartist #fibreartistsofinstagram #fiberart #fiberartistsofinstagram #australianbasketry

15.01.2022 Always Was. Always Will Be. Aboriginal Land. Grateful this week and every day to live, work, love, play and raise children on the lands of the many nations and language groups of the first Australians , especially the Wanindilyakwa, where i work @anindilyakwa_arts , as well as Larrakia Country which i call home, #aboriginalaustralia #alwayswasalwayswillbe

15.01.2022 Today is the last day to see my show ‘From Mangroves to Mudflats’ @tactilearts . If you are in Darwin you have until 4 pm to drop by and say hi to my ‘Mermaids ‘ and ‘Seahorses’ handwoven from ghost net , fishingline and recycled dolls . They are even more fun in real life, but they do carry a serious message about our frivolous overuse of plastics, the impact this has upon sea life and our oversight of how this will impact upon future generations . #barbie #mylittlepony #ecoart #ecoartist #wovensculpture #ghostnet #ghostnetart #fibrearts #fiberartist #fibreartistsofinstagram #fiberart #fiberartistsofinstagram #oceanart #oceanartist #mermaids #mermaidart #mermaidsarereal #seahorse #seahorses #basketry #topendtourism #darwin #artistsofinstagram @ Darwin, Northern Territory

15.01.2022 Fortunate enough today to travel with Maicie to her Grandfathers country along with the the @anindilyakwarangers for their annual Groote Eylandt Beach Clean Up. Many Ute loads of marine debris were collected on a small stretch of remote beach . Ocean plastics entrap and maim or even drown sea life . Maicie and i are inspired to take some of this rubbish and weave it into sea creatures so that the story of this problem can be carried out into the world . Maicie is making another ‘Monster Fish’ . I am making a series of Jellyfish from ghost net and fishing-line . These works will be exhibited in France next year. #ecoart #ecoartist #ghostnet #fiberart #fibreartist #fibreartistsofinstagram @ Eight Mile Beach

06.01.2022 I love this creative response to my Jelly Baby’s by @be.yond_eli . I appreciate hearing your stories about your experiences and connections with these works. I heard a teenager ride past once , saying ‘ the big one is my brother , the little one is me’ . @withregram @be.yond_eli Two years ago I arrived in Darwin, Australia, the place that later I called home for 1 year. At the moment I keep up myself thinking about the past travels and planning the future ones, worki...ng hard to save as much as I can and waiting for borders reopen. In my free time I rediscovered how much I love art, drawing and painting, so I decide to illustrate all the places I've been so far (in the years I've done already a lot of travel sketches). I needed a project, a goal, something to keep me creative and happy that's why I decide to share with you my travels in a different way than only pictures. Hope you'll enjoy my project, please keep supporting me by liking this pic, follow me and please share #cityofdarwin #publicart #jellyfish #ecoart #ecoartist #fibreart #fibreartist #fibreartistsofinstagram #basketryart #basketryaustralia #darwin See more

04.01.2022 Title- ‘Crocodile ( blue study)’ medium - fishingline , crocodile skull, wire , fish hook I love living in a place where theres a chance that a crocodile may eat you for tea if you swim in the sea . Does that stop me swimming ? No! Crocodiles are known to also fall victim to entrapment in ghost nets and entanglement in discarded fishingline , causing loss of limbs and life for these beautiful beasts . Which animal is more dangerous ? #crocodile #ecoart #ecoartist #ecofeminist #upcycledart #ghostnet #marinedebris #crocodile

01.01.2022 Works on paper from my solo show ‘From Mangroves to Mudflats’ @tactilearts until 4 pm Sunday Experimentations with plant pigments and cyanotype processes (sun printing), along with weaving with marine debris has resulted in these new works which emulate the sea-life and coastal environments found in the proximity of the Arafura Sea, weaving the tragic tale of sea life in the plastic age.. #cyanotype #sunprint #plantdyes #ecoart #ecoartist #seascape #ghostnetart #ghostnet #ocean #oceanlove
