11.01.2022 L E N S E we all have our own lense through which we view the world, its people and its problems. The lense is paper thin when we are born, but as we grow and learn (from society, our culture and those around us) it becomes more dense and we are less discerning and simply see things how we were taught to see. The outer edges of what is actually happening may not be within our view, either because we choose not to see it or because we are oblivious or ignorant. The time h...as come to broaden our vision to be consciously and actively more inclusive, less biased, anti racist, more demanding of equality and less tolerant of the systems and structures complicity and implicitly responsible for reinforcing prejudice. To look beyond the narrative weve been told and allow ourselves to see the truth, however ugly. Clear sight which no longer filters out the systemic racism inherent in our society, including that in our own backyards and local communities. Its not an overnight fix to peel off the privilege and prejudice or to rebuild our biased views (often unconscious, layered and reinforced through the generations, within families the media and our society). It takes courage and conscious unlearning and re-education to wear a new pair of crystal clear glasses upon our more humble and compassionate noses. As a privileged white person I need to do more and vow to take action and contribute to a new social discourse, taking responsibility for what is essentially a team effort but where it must begin with the individual.
