22.01.2022 Thousands of Australians are admitted to hospitals with influenza complications every year. The message from the AMA is simple get your flu vaccine now. Getti...ng the flu shot now will better protect you from the serious prospect of having both COVID-19 and influenza at the same time. Current guidelines stipulate a 14-day gap between a flu shot and a COVID-19 vaccination and GPs can help patients understand which one they should get first. #VaccinesWork
21.01.2022 The AMA stands with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. They suffer health disparities that see them become sicker and die earlier than non-Indigenous... Australians. In usual times, many doctors and medical students would be marching in these protests. We want to see change. But we cannot allow the coronavirus pandemic continue to affect our way of life. We must stop the spread of COVID-19.

14.01.2022 The AMA is alarmed at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's latest findings on dangerously rising global temperatures and is warning government inacti...on on climate change risks the health of Australians. AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid issued an urgent warning: There’s no time left to lose. Further delays on driving down emissions will have a negative impact on the health of Australians." Dr Khorshid has called for the government to listen to and act on the scientific findings of climate experts, as it has relied on medical experts to respond to COVID-19. Climate change is a health emergency and as we have seen with the COVID emergency, the best way to deal with it is to listen to the science and act on the evidence and advice of the experts. The IPCC has sounded the alarm on rising global temperatures and ignoring the clear evidence of rapid increases in global temperatures will ultimately affect the health and wellbeing of Australians, Dr Khorshid said. 14.01.2022 The AMA believes that telehealth has been successful in providing Australians with essential healthcare during the pandemic and welcomes the Federal Government'...s decision to reinstate longer level C telephone consultations. This decision by the Federal Government follows discussions over the past few days after AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid contacted the Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, to remove restrictions on the use of telehealth as part of its pandemic response. The decision to reinstate a longer level C telephone consultation item is critical for patients with complex health needs. Dr Khorshid said: For many patients, using the telephone is their preferred method and it helps ensure that people, who lack technological expertise of videoconferencing software or don’t have access to adequate internet speeds, are not denied access to essential GP services. The pandemic is not over and the AMA has warned more outbreaks around the country are likely. This decision by the Federal Government supports improved patient access to telephone consultations when a hotspot is declared and it means that GPs are better positioned to respond and continue to provide timely access to care for their patients during such challenging times. 13.01.2022 Doctors and nurses are calling on the Government to urgently mandate staff ratios of registered nurses in aged care. The Royal Commission’s Final Report recomme...nds from July next year, minimum qualified staff time in nursing homes should be 200 minutes per resident per day about three hours and 20 minutes with at least 40 minutes provided by a registered nurse. This is a three-star model. The AMA calls for the model to be brought closer to 5 star, enabling between 242-264 minutes of care per resident per day, with at least 44-63 care minutes provided by a registered nurse. 09.01.2022 R U OK? Day 2020 is very different this year as we all experience living through the global pandemic with our resources and resilience stretched beyond their usual limits. We have all been required to rapidly adapt personally and professionally to the new way of life. R U OK? Day’s mission ‘is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life’. This is so important right now to encourage people to reach o...ut to others and remind them they are not alone. This is especially so for busy doctors who may be lonely and isolated even in busy workplaces. Doctors’ Health NT exists to support the health of doctors and medical students as we manage our busy medical careers. Events such as the pandemic have required all frontline medical professionals caring for the community to draw on their experience and knowledge to lead us through this health crisis, the after-effects of which will persist. Doctors’ Health NT was established in 2016 by doctors for doctors with the mission of improving the health of the medical profession for the good of the community. R U OK? Day reinforces the importance of regularly checking in on our colleagues, who may be struggling to deal with a range of difficulties, alone and privately. Being alert to the warning signs of distress in colleagues and approaching them with kindness and persistence may be career-saving and lifesaving. One of R U OK? Day’s goals is to ‘strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us’. Doctors’ Health NT encourages all doctors and medical students to have their own GP and establish an accessible network of personal and professional support. We offer an additional suite of confidential and professional supports for a colleague in need or yourself. One such service is confidential access to our anonymous 24/7 phone line where you can discuss any matter with one of our team of experienced GPs For more information about our professional, confidential supports visit www.doctorshealthnt.com.au. R U OK? talk with a friend, have a coffee with a colleague, pick up the phone, today or any day.

07.01.2022 ASMOF NT Welcomes Apology Yesterday, ASMOF NT were invited to a meeting between Doctors-in-Training (DiT) at Royal Darwin Hospital, and the hospital executive. There were around 100 DiTs, and the hospital executive was represented by Dr Feekery (the author of the original letter), and A/Prof Palmer. ... ASMOF NT were very happy to hear Dr Feekery apologise for his letter from the 3rd of October, and retract it in full. A/Professor Palmer and the executive team listened to the grievances of the DiT group. There was acknowledgement that currently some parts of the health service do not provide adequate training opportunities, rostering practices and leave availability need improving, and that there are problems with the recruitment process for new doctors. The executive team have agreed to meet further with DiTs to fully understand and rectify these issues. The executive also offered support to include some of these areas within the Enterprise Agreement which is currently being negotiated. ASMOF NT looks forward to working collaboratively with A/Professor Palmer and the hospital executive. Following the meeting, Dr Thomas Fowles (ASMOF President) said We’re pleased that Dr Feekery has withdrawn and apologised for his initial letter regarding resignations. It was reassuring to see A/Professor Palmer engage with front-line doctors and recognise that improvements need to be made, we consider this an excellent first step. We will continue to watch for improvements to the working conditions of doctors. Territorians deserve excellent health care, and that can only be provided if we have a stable and professional medical workforce.
06.01.2022 The AMA has welcomed new Medicare funding for GPs to vaccinate patients against COVID-19 during home visits and visits to aged care facilities, but warns more i...s needed to address vaccine hesitancy in patients over 50 years of age. AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid said It is critical we complete the job of vaccinating the most vulnerable in the community as soon as possible. This measure will help plug the current gaps in COVID vaccination in aged care facilities. However, the biggest issue right now is vaccine hesitancy in the over 50s. AMA has been working with the Minister for Health and his Department to allow vaccine hesitant Australians time for a proper discussion with a GP about COVID vaccination. Current Medicare funding only supports brief consultations. Yet GPs may need to spend up to thirty minutes for some patients to discuss their specific circumstances and ensure they understand the benefits of COVID vaccination. When this occurs, most Australians decide to go ahead and get vaccinated.

05.01.2022 WA and NT health authorities say a woman with rare blood clotting linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine was transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital earlier this mont...h, where she remains in intensive care. READ MORE: ab.co/3g6A5W0 Therapeutic Goods Administration spokesman Professor John Skerritt says the woman in her forties received the vaccination in WA, and is in a stable condition. Today the TGA confirmed the woman's health condition is similar to cases seen in Europe and the UK, because it involved significant blood clots in the veins and a low blood platelet count. It's the second confirmed case in Australia, where more than 700,000 AstraZeneca doses have been administered.
